The Colombian Jewish community is reeling after an anti-Zionist rabbi was tapped to be the country's director of religious affairs.

Richard Gamboa Ben-Eleazar was appointed to the post in Colombia's Ministry of the Interior by Colombian President Gustavo Petro according to an announcement Gamboa made on X last Thursday.

He thanked Petro for "the opportunity to serve excluded and marginalized religious minorities from the Directorate of Religious Affairs, in the construction of a just and peaceful Colombia for all."

But Colombia's Jewish community does not recognize Gamboa as a rabbi, and Jewish groups have condemned him as an antisemite. He reportedly received his ordination from a Florida institution called the Esoteric Theological Seminary that advertises rabbinical degrees for $160. Marcos Peckel, executive director of the Confederation of Jewish Communities of Colombia, expressed outrage over the appointment. Gamboa's appointment comes after Petro severed diplomatic ties with Israel last May, accusing the country of commiting genocide in Gaza, an accusation Israel has denied.

"This man refers to Zionist Jews as heretics, apostates, and Nazis. That's how he talks about us," Peckel told The Media Line. "A person who speaks this way cannot be entrusted with the religious freedoms of Jewish citizens."

Colombia's Chief Rabbi Alfredo Goldschmidt also rejected the appointment of Gamboa, telling The Media Line, "We've had very good experiences with past religious affairs directors, usually evangelical leaders who respected all faiths. Gamboa has no such support—not from Jews, evangelicals, nor Catholics. He's had clashes with all."

Gamboa has castigated Israel and Zionism online. In a post on X in February, he wrote that Israel is a "neo-Nazi state" and said that "Zionism is an anti-Jewish, idolatrous, and apostate heresy."

The Anti-Defamation League joined the chorus of Jewish groups denouncing the appointment, posting on X that his appointment would "threaten religious freedom and the security of Colombia's Jewish community."

The ADL also accused Gamboa of having "ties to extremist groups." The Simon Wiesenthal Center said in a release that he and the ambassador representing Iran, Israel's chief adversary, have had a close relationship.

Gamboa defended himself in another post on X, writing, "In the last 48 hours, my human rights have been violated in Colombia: religious freedom, right to honor and a good name, freedom of conscience... they have done so publicly and in my capacity as a HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER!"

On April 15, the German state television station SWR reported under the headline " Easter Bunny on a Tank or with a Cannon – Easter with War Motifs: A Tübingen Bakery is Selling These Sugar Bunnies " something that just a short time ago would have caused an outcry across the entire German mainstream: A German bakery has brought the Nazi-era molds out of its basement and is using them to produce Easter bunnies depicted with Wehrmacht tanks and artillery.

This open glorification of war and the Wehrmacht—and thus the Nazi era itself—doesn't provoke protest at SWR, but rather sympathy. The words "Nazi," "Third Reich," "Wehrmacht," and so on are nowhere to be found in the article. Instead, the introduction to the article trivializes the issue:

"The Tübingen bakery Café Lieb sells sugar bunnies for Easter. The recipe and motifs come from past times, including World War II. Not everyone likes that."

Sugar bunnies used to be a common Easter treat when chocolate was scarce and expensive. The SWR broadcaster portrays this with appropriate nostalgia, writing:

"For the upcoming Easter holiday, the Café Lieb bakery in Tübingen is bringing its sugar bunnies back to the sales counters. This year, they also demonstrated how the bunnies are made on two special days. And all the molds from the past ninety years were brought out of the cellar—including those with war motifs."

The SWR also briefly quotes criticism of the bakery's action:

"The IMI association learned about the action in the newspaper "Schwäbisches Tagblatt" and is appalled. In an interview with SWR, association member Reza Schwarz said such actions contribute to the trivialization and normalization of the military and militarism. "People are now somehow mourning the good old wartime days. I think that's a mockery of the people affected by it," Schwarz said.

I would really like to know whether SWR has shortened this statement, because here too there is no indication whatsoever that the bakery is selling sweets that not only "contribute to the trivialization and normalization of the military and militarism," but that are cast from the original molds used during the Nazi era to make propaganda for the Nazi war and the Wehrmacht.

The SWR lets the bakery owner respond to this rather weak criticism:

"For the bakery's owner, Hermann Leimgruber, sugar bunnies are part of the tradition—in all their forms. They have been passed down through generations for 90 years. He doesn't understand the fuss. "My God, it's a part of our history. Back then, children received the bunny in a shell for Easter. You don't always have to turn the world upside down," he justifies the campaign.

Would the SWR react so deliberately relaxed if, for example, the AfD were to offer sweets at a party conference that were made from the same molds that were already part of German war propaganda during the Nazi era?

The SWR article shows once again that Russia is not far off the mark with its claim that Nazi ideology is being made socially acceptable again in Europe – and also in Germany itself. The fact that original Wehrmacht motifs are now available as sweets without criticism – especially at Easter, a religious festival of peace – shows that the German media's view of the Nazi era and the Second World War has indeed changed very quickly.

The SWR article contains no criticism of the editorial team. And since the report was published two days ago, on April 15, and the German mainstream media hasn't yet felt called upon to address it, other German media outlets seem to be okay with these "war bunnies" from the Nazi era as well.

And this, by the way, only about two weeks before the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.
