Me too, I was raised in the country and learned quite a bit in my youth; making shelter, trapping with wire (Rabbits) ..how to eat frogs etc ... but Im rusty now (to say the least) so hearing your survival advice is welcomed by me.
Got any recipes for barbequed dog meat? Seriously, if things get bad enough here I am going to kill me some stray dogs, which are in plentiful supply here.
In the meantime, while it's still tranquil and I can take weekend hikes, I'm learning how to recognize edible wild vegetation.
How about sources of fuel other than propane and such? I'm clueless.

kolnidre,
Your a smart guy, dogs must be dealt with. Sorry, no specific recipes for dog. At that point I'd say roast em over a fire and be happy to have something to eat!
Most people are going to make fatal errors when it comes to pets. When it comes down to feeding themselves vs their pets the vast majority will release them instead of killing Fluffy. You MUST KILL your dog or cat. The reasons are simple. If you release your cat they will quickly eat the small rodents in your surroundings which will drastically reduce the food supply for the chain because were talking about millions of cats being released. Remove the lower part of the chain and you will kill yourself off.
Second, if you can no longer feed your dog you must KILL it. Dogs are going to be extremely dangerous. They will very quickly form packs and be even more dangerous than most wild life. Reason being they will remember their domestic training and be able to sucker you in by being friendly. Once close enough after your guard is down they will attack. Wild dogs will form very large packs of up to 40 or so and you hnd better have a lot of 00 or #4 buckshot on your person to deal with that. Kill every dog in sight after things seriously break down or your done.

Learning wild edibles is of course wise but its difficult because its so much information. Best to get the proper foundation and limit it to the abundant plants in your area. Most try to learn it one plant at a time and its overwhelming. This book is the best I'm aware of for establishing patterns to make things much easier.
-Botany In A Day- The Patterns Method of Plant Identification by Thomas J. Elpel

In the food section of this book the author has a great little section of rhymes to help remember a basic framework of what is safe. Works pretty well.

Eventually I'm going to start a Food section breaking down the 8 elements of survival list but heres a simple start. Obviously this list is for a large portion of North America but with a little research the same list can be made for any area. You would want to supplement this basic list with some caught animal/fish meat and lack of sea salt would be an issue so stock up on that now. Hide it everywhere you can.
Six PLANTS THAT WILL KEEP YOU ALIVE (and everyone can recognize):
- DANDELION leaves for greens (blanch LIGHTLY if you find them too bitter), the flower is also nutritious - fry it in a bit of oil for example
- PINE NEEDLES contain more Vitamin C than oranges. (chop finely and steep a Tea, DON'T swallow needles)
- ACORNS for fat and protein (you must soak them in several changes of water to remove tannic acid. The remaining tannic acid solution has several important uses, look it up!)
- CATTAILS (study what parts are edible and what time of year, this plant is abundant and an amazing food source, one of the few abundant CARB. sources in the wild)
- POND LILIES (Lillie Pads) - (dig up the root, you would be amazed how large it is, excellent carb source)
- GRASSES: there are no grasses known to man that are poisonous. You MUST check the seeds however. If they are black or purple they have simply rotted and are toxic (don't eat the seed OR grass, look for another).
Also, use common sense. DO NOT use grass from the side of a highway or railway line because of pesticide spraying.
> Chew the grass but ONLY swallow the juices for its nutrition. You do not want to swallow the grass fiber because the human body has trouble processing it. Did you know that wheat and corn are part of the grass family?
As always, BEWARE OF POISONOUS MUSHROOMS and other POISONOUS PLANTS. If your not SURE don't eat it.

As for fuel, thats a serious concern that I'm not so sure there is an easy answer for. These Zio pricks really do have us by the balls on that one.
When they pull the plug on economy it will be so bad in a short time frame don't think I'd want to be running around too far. Really, where are you going to go after while? Vehicles and ATV's are very easy to ambush. I'd rather be on foot or a bike at that point to employ appropriate evasion tactics.
Once this gets bad you should already be at a safe location or be moving to one immediately. After that your pretty much going to be where you are or a wandering refugee with nothing, and you really do not want to be in that position or anywhere near people who are.
As a point of interest (sorry do not have link), I recall not too long ago reading about a tree being farmed in Australia that could be tapped like a maple. Apparently the liquid could be dumped directly into a DIESEL engine with no processing what so ever.

I've got a little rule I go by when it comes to eating what meat, and that is I wouldn't recommend eating anything that eats meat. Vegetarian game only with the exception of Rattlesnake, which is mighty good, if cooked right.
Squirrels, pidgeon or dove, prairie chicken, opossum, fish, and rabbits are some good choices.

AN EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR DEALING WITH DOG PACKS:
If you have a pack of feral dogs, coyotes or wolves operating in your area esp. after it all hits the fan they must be dealt with. Hunting them down is very time consuming and not all that effective. They have a little more experience than us humans and can be very evasive.
Here's an effective technique to solve this very serious issue. Its brutal but think of the dangers to you and yours. A dog killing a chicken can be frustrating but the first story of one getting at a local child and you will get over the brutality of this technique.
Large 3 prong treble hooks can be found at some fishing supply stores. Stock up on them as well as some strong wire. Used aircraft snare wire would be a good choice since its typically too twisted up to reuse.
The large treble hooks are tied to stout branches using pieces of strong wire about four and a half to five feet off the ground. Bait each hook with a chunk of beef. You get the picture of how this works. Keep in mind animal could still be alive and dangerous when you eventually come back to retrieve the hooks and wire. Your most likely going to need a rifle for this task.
For wolves just place them another foot or so higher and make sure to secure them to a larger branch.
The bottom line is you need to become the "top predator" in your area both for your personal protection and to protect your animal food supply. Dogs/coyotes/wolves are very effective killing machines and will take out your animal supply from the top down. They need to be kept in check.
This is going to be a far greater threat than most realize. Keep yourself safe.

I wouldn't worry too much about wolves unless you are living in high country, and besides, wolves are very reclusive and shy for the most part.
Coyotes are usually reclusive and nocturnal, and even they usually don't bother anything except for chickens, some sheep, or a small pets.
Feral dogs living in packs would be the only slight problem, unless they become rabid.
A firecracker would scare most of them away.
