Birobidzhan: The New Promised Land as a Peaceful Solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

For decades, the entire world has been searching for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two states? A stillborn dream. A binational state? A dangerous illusion. The status quo? Endless war, apartheid, and the daily humiliation of an entire people. Yet, a solution exists—simple, peaceful, and historic: Birobidzhan.
Let's start with the famous "two-state solution," the mantra of Western chancelleries since Oslo. This idea assumes that Israel would agree to cede a true sovereign state to the Palestinians on less than 22% of historic Palestine, even as it continues to nibble away at these scraps of territory with its settlements every day. The truth is stark: Israel never intended to allow a viable Palestinian state. The entire Oslo process was nothing more than a staging to buy time, expand the settlements, and create "Bantustans" without territorial continuity or real autonomy. The two-state solution is therefore utopian, not because of a lack of Palestinian will, but because it runs counter to the very essence of the Zionist project: exclusive control of the land between the Jordan River and the sea.
Faced with this obvious failure, some propose a single, egalitarian, and democratic state, where Jews and Palestinians would have the same rights. On paper, the idea is beautiful, but as always, this humanist dream is shattered by colonial reality. Zionism never intended to live with the Palestinians, but to replace them. Israel is founded on ethno-religious exclusivism and the idea of a guaranteed Jewish majority. In a single state, the majority would quickly become Palestinian, making it impossible to maintain the state's exclusively Jewish character. And beyond the numbers, there are the crimes: a century of colonization, expulsions, massacres, and apartheid does not disappear under the pretext of a common flag. No worthy people would agree to live "in peace" with their executioners without justice, without recognition, without restitution. Finally, even if such a state were proclaimed, the army, the economy, the senior administration, and all levers of power would remain under Israeli control. It would simply be colonialism disguised as democracy.
So what remains? A radical, forgotten, but realistic solution: Birobidzhan .
Who still remembers Birobidzhan? In the 1930s, the Soviet Union, under Stalin, created a Jewish autonomous territory on the Chinese border, the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Oblast. The idea was to offer Jews a national homeland without colonizing Palestine. At its peak, Birobidzhan had about 30,000 Jewish residents, with Yiddish-language schools, newspapers, and theaters. Today, this territory officially exists within the Russian Federation, although its Jewish population declined sharply following the collapse of the USSR and emigration to Israel.
Why is no one talking about it? Because Birobidzhan is living proof that there was, and still is, a territorial solution that does not involve the dispossession of another people. It is a vast, underpopulated territory where no Palestinian needs to be expelled, and where those who want a Jewish state can settle without violence or apartheid.
But obviously, the Zionists will always refuse such a solution, they will cry anti-Semitism, as always. There is a profound reason for this refusal: the biblical motivations of Zionism . For religious Zionists as for a part of the secular Zionists, Palestine is not a simple place of settlement, it is a mythological land, presented as given by God to the "chosen people". This messianic and eschatological dimension, even among the secularists, permeates the entire Zionist ideology. It is not simply a refuge that they seek, but the exclusive possession of a land considered sacred, where their domination would be legitimate in essence, independently of any historical, archaeological or moral reality. Thus, Birobidzhan, although legally and geographically possible, cannot compete with this biblical myth which justifies in their eyes all the violence and all the injustices committed.
So why refuse? Because they are not seeking a mere state, but the fulfillment of a prophecy, the domination of a land that does not belong to them, at all costs, by sword and blood. They want to live in the place of another people, on its ruins, and not simply somewhere, in peace.
On the contrary, Birobidzhan offers them a state, a recognized territory, a legitimate national home, without stealing the land of another people.
Some will say this is utopian; no, what is truly utopian is to believe that a state founded on dispossession and apartheid can live forever in peace. History is clear: no colonialism is eternal, and the only true peace will be the end of the occupation and the complete liberation of Palestine.
Birobidzhan proves that Zionism did not need Palestine to exist, but admitting this truth would destroy the entire messianic and victim-centered narrative that today justifies occupation, apartheid, and massacres. This is why this solution is forbidden, nipped in the bud by those who have chosen perpetual war.
There is a land for Jews, it is called Birobidzhan; there is a land for Palestinians, it is called Palestine. Any other solution is nothing but compromise and injustice. Birobidzhan is true peace; it remains to be seen whether the world will one day have the courage to impose it.
