Misguided commented:
The term "green shoots" was coined in 1949 during a controversial psychology experiment conducted at the now-defunct Camsden University. The double-blind study involved graduate students in the psychology department and a handful of volunteers from the surrounding community. Those assigned to the role of "prison wardens" were instructed to deprive the "prisoners" of sleep and repeat nonsensical phrases such as "bird rocks", "green shoots", "vanilla pencils", and "blue roots". The stated purpose of the nonsensical terms was that they could trigger "nervous exhaustion episodes" in the subjects when mentioned even many years later. Terms that would not normally be found together where used to avoid accidental triggering. The designers of the study wrote, "Heaven forbid that we should use a common term, such as "hydrangea bush" and cause a subject to collapse when visiting Aunt Hilda and reviewing her garden." Criminal charges were initiated against the study design team, but were later dropped. The university closed its doors three years later, due to lack of funding.

this is a comment from a reader on the cbs marketwatch headline "world bank warns of deeper global contraction".  Has anyone ever heard of this experiment -I have googled but can't find much info.

I never heard of the study or Camsden U. I remember when I was at university that there were a lot of unethical studies. One of the most Famous was Dr. Watson and Little Albert phobia study. There were also a lot of very famous Pavlov studies that have remained hidden.  Pavlov did a lot or research basically training people like dogs.

I've never heard of the study. I've heard of plenty of unethical studies but this isn't one. I'll do some searching. It sounds like something that could be possible given my understanding of conditioning.

I saw a colour video of a colour film transfer with what looked like teen-agers from the 60's talking about a study they were involved in, with some acting as prisoners and others as wardens. This was from youtube, I think.

Sorry I don't remember at this time what it was named. It also included a colour filming of an unethical 'experiment' where young children were show films in a classroom and told by their teacher, being conditioned to 'hate' the children who had blue eyes. Maybe I am not quite on the mark with the description. I was thinking poor children, these people make an unethical study which uses fraud on young children. It was heartwrenching, and they were very clinical about it, including the teacher.  :x
