Kasparov beats Karpov in rerun of 1984 chess clash

MADRID (Reuters Life!) - Russian chess legend Gary Kasparov has won a re-match of his classic 1984 world championship contest with compatriot Anatoly Karpov, ending a 12-match clash in the Spanish city of Valencia 9-3.

In relaxed surroundings worlds away from the original clash -- played out amid Cold War tension which had converted Kasparov into a western favorite -- Kasparov won five speed matches in the final eight-match clash late on Thursday.

The players plan to play again in Paris in December, a spokeswoman for the Valencia regional government said.

In 1984 Kasparov, now 46 and a leading opponent of Russian Prime Minister Vladimimir Putin, waged an epic battle with then reigning champion Karpov, now 58, which was called off after 48 matches because of concern over the players' health.

Kasparov said the 1984 match was called off to save Karpov from defeat -- and a nervous breakdown -- as the match had come to symbolize the competing forces then at play in the Soviet Union. Karpov was a darling of the Soviet establishment.

By the time the 1984 match was halted, Karpov had won five games and Kasparov three, with 40 draws. Both said they wanted to play on.

it is often said that chess is geo-political opera. a pure clash of thought systems and psychological upbringing. note that bobby fischer was an anti-zionist and imho was bumped off recently for upping the political ante. you will note that kasparov is supporting fomenko at the moment.
studying the agendas of the grandmasters is always useful for testing the political waters of the day as they are more often than not, statements.
As i have been pushing in my recent audios there seems to be a conspiracy within the mathematical/logical/game theory community which has an evolutionary information agenda.

QuoteGary Kasparov aka Garryck Weinstein

Former world chess champion and opposition activist Gary Kasparov has condemned Soviet Russia for supporting Turkey during the years of the Armenian Genocide, the New York Times reports. "The authorities are the source of problems," the chess player said during a commemoration event for the Genocide victims. The ceremony commemorating the Armenian genocide during World War I was held on Friday in a village near Sochi, the Winter Olympics-2014 city. Newly elected Mayor, Anatoly Pakhomov attended the ceremony, a crucial gesture to the city's large Armenian population, the New York Times says. He delivered a short, respectful address and then stepped back to polite clapping, making room for a row of schoolgirls to recite verses.

Gary Kasparov, born to an Armenian mother, spoke after two hours of waiting. Beginning innocently enough, he made an offhand mention of Boris Nemtsov, Pakhomov's rival at the recent election whom Kasparov had supported. Then he began a tirade against Moscow, saying Soviet Russia had supported Turkey at the time of the massacres.
...
Before getting into Kasparov's (aka Garryck Weinstein) nonsense, to set the record straight, Armenians don't refer to the Armenian Genocide as "The Great Calamity." Only traitors and enemies use that term (in fact it is very offensive) because the word GENOCIDE has distinct, legal implications since there is no statute of limitations on the crime of genocide. Weinstein also neglects to mention that during a good number of years when this was happening, so, too, was World War I. Armenians were accused of supporting Russia and a good number of them did, others were in the Turkish Army and summarily disarmed and murdered.

Next of all, he was born in Azerbaijan, his mother converted to Judaism for his father before he was born and any connection to Armenism is strictly self serving as he has no right whatsoever to speak for Armenians.
