Apparently one of the best war movies to come out in long time.

9 POTA The Ninth Company

Russia has picked Fyodor Bondarchuk's 9-ya rota / The 9th Company, the story of an army unit sent to Afghanistan to fight mujahadeen guerrillas. Made with a budget of US$9 million, 9-ya rota became a major box-office hit in its home country. Sergei Bodrov's Kavkazskiy plennik / Prisoner of the Mountains, another Russian film depicting another of Russia's deadly war follies (the war against Muslim rebels — read Chechens and associates — in the Caucasus region) was nominated for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar in 1996.

Fyodor, by the way, is the son of Sergei Bondarchuk, whose lengthy adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace (1965-67) is considered one of the masterworks of Russian cinema.

Do you know if it's true that "No one has ever conquered Afghanistan"?

Yep, it's true. Only Taliban managed to rule it... for a short while of course.

BTW, this movie is quite awesome. Highly recommended from me... it portrays war for what it truly is.

Afghanistan has always been a rough land with different tribes fighting against one another but it was subdued for a very long period by the Parthians/Sassanids (Persian Empire) and was called Khorasan back then, then the Arabs during the Ummyad Dynasty. But broke away when the Abbassids came to power and they converted to Islam early on. But the near modern history period from the 1700s onwards no one was able to keep the country stable. The Brits couldn't hold it, even their king was deposed by the Soviet backed militias in the 1970s and the Taliban ruled most of the Pashtun tribes but were in a constant state of war against the Northern Alliance (The current Kharazai government).

Its not exactly no one conquered it, its more like you cannot rule it, its very lawless and anarchaic with lots of tribes fighting amongst each other. It is also very poor in terms of raw materials, harvest, water, oil. So even conquering it wouldn't accomplish much.

I watched the show. Excellent. Thanks MikeWB for introducing it. It reminded me of the great 1990s  German film Stalingrad:

After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. In 1914, these same banks bought the controlling number of shares in the newly organized Federal Reserve Bank of New York, paying for the stock with the Czar\'s sequestered funds. In November 1917,  Red Guards drove a truck to the Imperial Bank and removed the Romanoff gold and jewels. The gold was later shipped directly to Kuhn, Loeb Co. in New York.-- Curse of Canaan

If you like war movies that don't focus on Jews or Allied commandos killing all Germans with 1 bullet. here are a few good ones:

- Das Boot - its German but I bought a copy from Virgin that was dubbed in English, a little bit clustrophobic but very good movie
- All Quiet on the Western Front - its about German troops in WW1, I watched the newer one as I'm not very comfortable watching black and white films.
- Empire of the Sun - Speilberg I know but surprizingly it didn't talk about Jewish suffering but the suffering of all even the Japanese and Chinese during the Pacific war. Its a bit old I think 1985 or something before the holohoax gained any prominence.
- Enemy at the gates - Great movie since it does not dehumanize the Germans and actually shows the real force that took the brunt of the war the Russians (not stalin or his party who didn't fire a shot at the Germans but the ordinary Soviet troops were getting killed)

Three Comrades ( English Subtitles)
1:39:57 - 2 years ago
Through the remarkable and highly personal story of lifelong friends, Three Comrades depicts the downfall of the Soviet Union and the devastating impact of Chechnya's struggle for independence and protracted war upon the lives of its innocent citizens. Islam, Ramzan, and Ruslan grew up in the Chechen capital of Grozny and were always together. They loved to listen to Western rock music as a protest to the Soviet regime; they talked about movies and girls and dreamed of the future. Then in 1994, war broke out, and their lives changed forever. Ramzan became a cameraman for local TV and tirelessly documented the war. Filmmaker Masha Novikova incorporates horrifying battle footage captured by Ramzan to portray the plight of common people, who have nothing to do with politics or affairs of state but are the war's greatest victims. With Islam as her audience's reference point, Novikova relates the life story of each of the three friends. Interviews with family members today and images of joyful moments before the war become particularly powerful when juxtaposed with harrowing scenes of misery and terror. Buoyed by a nostalgic rock 'n' roll score, Three Comrades is a strikingly crafted cinematic mosaic--a heartrending glimpse of everyday lives shattered by the upheaval of war.
