8 Elements of Survival:

Ok, we're going to cover the absolute basics of ULTIMATE SURVIVAL because that is what we are facing.
I'll separate each category into a different thread to make sure it doesn't get lost, its that important.

Every category is essential and none can be removed. This is what you need to be breathing and safe when it comes right down to it.  Yes, I know primitive tribes live even more basic, we will cover some of that as well because you just might be staring your child in the eyes and have NOTHING to work with. So don't give me any ignorant BS like "who wants to live that way". You WILL fight to live and if you won't fight for your loved ones... well I don't know what to tell you.
****It never ceases to amaze me the BS that comes out of peoples mouths regarding this matter when they have a full stomach and a warm room to sleep in. DON'T BE FOOLISH.****

Take any category off this list and your basically toast with what we are facing. Some categories will take you down faster than others and some depend on the situation at hand, but make no mistake, if you don't have these categories down your essentially done. So its simple isn't it.... learn em and learn em well. Start RIGHT NOW. Copy the list and look at it EVERYDAY. Ask yourself how will you provide each category for yourself and loved ones with no infrastructure.

Your first goal should be to keep YOURSELF alive. You are no good to any of your loved ones if your dead, they will be needing you. Point made.
------------------------------------------------------------

8 Elements of Survival:

#1- Shelter / Clothing

#2- Water

#3- Fire

#4- Food

#5 - Sanitation / Hygiene / First-aid

- Navigation / Transportation

- Weapons / Protection Tactics

- Communication (without cellphones)
------------------------------------------------------------------

#'s 1 through 5 are in ORDER OF IMPORTANCE.  NEVER, EVER alter from this priority list UNLESS your facing a very specific situation that must be dealt with NOW. ie: someone suddenly pointing a gun at you, a loved one cutting themselves with an axe, etc.........  Again, NEVER alter the priority list of SHELTER, WATER, FIRE, FOOD, SANITATION/HYGENE unless forced to deal with something else NOW.

To be clear Water & Fire are roughly of the same priority level because you may require fire to make water SAFE.  Understand this and keep it in mind.

The remaining categories of >

- Navigation / Transportation
- Weapons / Protection Tactics
- Communication (without cellphones)

< are extremely important as well obviously but tend to be more situation dependent, although not entirely. This is why they do not necessarily have an order of importance.

Note: I realize a couple of the categories cover 2 or 3 different areas but they are grouped together because they are interrelated.
--------------------

I'm not interested in debating the list. There is much thought put into it by many seriously trained people and prepared individuals. Any suggestion ever given to me ended up fitting into one of the categories so again, I'm not interested in debating.

This covers the absolute BASICS of what you and your family need to be alive and safe and thats what I'm interested in.
Again, I will start a separate thread for each category to get you and your loved ones covered. DO IT NOW or your going to watch your loved ones suffer. I don't want to hear any crap like "how do I get my wife on board". Be a man, grow some balls and do what you KNOW has to be done.

One final note:
Think SIMPLE. I'll say it again, think SIMPLE.
Forget all the complex and costly ideas of your own solar system to get off the grid and all that stuff. Were talking ULTIMATE SURVIVAL only.

Drill this into your head:
When suddenly in a new location for whatever reason start with shelter FIRST & NOW.  Delegate to others where possible. SHELTER FIRST.

One point to clarify:

No doubt when you get up in the morning and at end of day your going to clean yourself.  What I'm speaking of here is focus at covering your bases so you can set up routines.

Another note:
This list does not cover the very important topics like attitude, mindset and spiritual foundation. We can get into that as well but people tend to like to start with gear because if they have something in their hand they feel like they are getting started. That is fine. Its a start.

THE SURVIVAL RULE of THREE's

This is a list to help put survival in perspective.

Many have seen this list but it almost ALWAYS has the first and last ones missing!

   •   It takes about three seconds to die without  THINKING
   •   It takes about three minutes to die without  AIR
   •   It takes about three hours to die without  SHELTER
   •   It takes about three days to die without  WATER
   •   It takes about three weeks to die without  FOOD
   •   It takes about three months to die without  HOPE

   •   Try to have at least three ways of preventing each of the above (a backup to your backup).

Think about this list as well and compare it to the "8 elements of Survival" list above. Were trying to get you THINKING and building your mindset to be able to face rough times.

Wimpy

Very good advice ZS, basic survival truths in a nutshell and not too complicated to remember.  Each survival element could fill volumes but the condensed format stands regardless of details.
I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger today.

Hello Wimpy,

"Survival Truths" are always an excellent description and yes, keeping things uncomplicated are always the way to go when it comes to this topic.

You are correct, each survival element can take volumes and too often does. This is why I'd like to take some time to lay it out for others in simple terms.

Survival truths are not something one wants to be faced with while having no knowledge and experience. Its like the anti-gun fools, when unexpectedly faced with the forced realization that you MUST own firearms and know how to use it... well it happens really fast and its not a good way to suddenly learn this simple truth.

Guess the saying "what doesn't kill you......." has merits but some prep work sure does make it easier to handle.

At 10 years old I survived an unexpected overnight stay about 10 miles from civilization (which was very remote at that) in a 40 below zero blizzard with nothing but what I was wearing, a small group of similar aged children who didn't have much of a clue and the only adult was just about useless. Using my head and acting quickly proved to be the right move.

Many years later had hypothermia so bad just about froze to death while canoeing in very late fall. Fell through a beaver damn trying to pull canoe across than paddled across a 3 mile lake during bad rain storm. Stupid..

Years later survived heat stroke so bad during some training was heading toward unconsciousness, not fun.

Also faced an angry soldier sticking a machine gun in my face while unarmed.

Lessons learned ??? NEVER AGAIN. I don't screw around with these things any longer and stupidly temp fate.

Ok, lets add some books to get started;

There are way too many "survival books" on the market.  Once the crowd figured out you could sell this stuff the majority just copied each other, mistakes and all.
