"As I noted Tuesday, there is growing evidence that BP's oil well - technically called the "well casing" or "well bore" - has suffered damage beneath the level of the sea floor.

The evidence is growing stronger and stronger that there is substantial damage beneath the sea floor. Indeed, it appears that BP officials themselves have admitted to such damage. This has enormous impacts on both the amount of oil leaking into the Gulf, and the prospects for quickly stopping the leak this summer."

^^ This is an interview with Matt Simmons, an expert on the oil industry for over 30 years.
He doubts that they will EVER be able to cap the well and that it could DESTROY the entire gulf of Mexico.
The pressure of this well is over 40,000 psi. The pressure on an average 'good' well is around 1500 psi.
There are indeed multiple openings on the ocean floor where enormous amounts of oil has formed undersea 'lakes'.
When the hurricanes come, this might paint portions of the gulf states black with oil.

This is a near doomsday event and our lives will NEVER be the same.
While the economic impact of this is significant, it is the least of our worries.
I hope people here understand the enormity of this event. It trumps EVERYTHING else that is happening in the world right now.
