The image on the right is a page from a Latin translation of The Zohar, ascribed to Isaac Newton. The Zohar in Latin

In the book, The Religion of Isaac Newton, Frank E. Manuel wrote that "Isaac Newton was convinced that Moses possessed the knowledge of all scientific secrets." Dr Seth Pancoast wrote that "Isaac Newton was led to the discovery of physical laws (forces of gravitation and repulsion) through the study of Kabbalah."

A Latin translation of The Book of Zohar (Kabbalah Denudata), was found in Newton's library, and is currently kept at the Trinity College in Cambridge. Isaac Newton based his scientific research on philosophical principles. In particular, Newton wrote: "In my books I laid down the principles of philosophy that are not purely philosophical, but also mathematical, which can serve as the basis for discussing physical matters. So that they don't seem fruitless, I accompanied them with some physical explanations" (Newton I., Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, 1686, V. 3, "The System of the World," p. 501).

(I wrote the previous post around 9:00, and I have had a great time in prayer since then with some friends by phone...the pictures and update from West Hollywood will have to wait until tomorrow since it is almost midnight here. I wanted to post another interesting email I received on Isaac Newton and the Kabbalah):

Hi Dwayna,

A major aspect of this article that struck me the most was that Newton "preached" his scientific theories as opposed to debating them as possibilities which would have left them open to change when others would advance their theories.

Newton knew God incorrectly as he embraced Arian philosophy, but we see that he fully embraced the renaissance-era "Two-Book" theory that God uses to communicate to us:

Book One: The Book of Scripture aka the Bible, but also remember that the original 1611 KJV contained the apocrypha. Jane Lead and the Philadelphian Society were trying to approach the knowledge to God by embracing the Kabbalah as a Divinely Inspired book along with the Bible. They did this because they embraced the teachings of German Kaballist Jacob Boehme who syncretised the Kabbalah with the Bible. Newton had definitely read Boehme's works and several people have shown that Newtons' first 3 laws of gravity were taken from Boehme kabbalah-based conceptualization of God as Ein Sof emanating himself into the material realm first as Adam Kadmon and finally as Jesus Christ. Newton rejected the Gilgul theory of souls in the Kabbalah in the last pages of his book, "Optiks".

Book Two: This "book" is the Book of Nature or Works of His Word that we see in the natural world. We can "read" nature scientifically and in so doing we get to know God because we can see how and why He created things. The Book of Job contained many admonitions to explore nature and science:

Job 28: 1-2
"Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone."

Remember I sent you the definition of alchemy taken from the Oxford Dictionary of World Religions. It was believed that all base metals were gradually morphing into more noble metals. Likewise, it was believed that all men was gradually turning into Christs. This was commonly believed during Newton's time.

In one sense, Boehme was half right. Boehme had a "revelation" when he looked at a pewter dish and saw his reflection because of the combination of the sun striking the polished surface reflecting to his eyes. The Kabbalah term, "As above, so below" is applicable here in the sense that we can't "see" who we are except for the Light of God's Son. That part is true, however Boehme's Lurian Kabbalah-based thesis was that God is weak since he contracted Himself to make room for His creation. In the process of contraction (withdrawing) He left behind fragments of His light that became trapped in matter and when they fell to earth -- the material realm -- they shattered. So, God is weak because we all contained fragments of His light inside us and unless we do not "come together in the unity of love" etc. God will never be complete and be whole. Further, God did not know who He was since He didn't have a mirror to see His reflection in, so He decided to create the world to act as a mirror for His self-ID. Unbiblical yes, but this is classic Lurian Kabbalism. When Boehme looked at the pewter disk and contemplated on the sun's reflection, he gained a Gnostic revelation about God using the Kabbalah as a hermeneutical lens.

Another classic misinterpretation of the Book of Nature is found in Romans chap 1 where God tells us that even the Trinity is made known in nature:

Romans 1:19-20
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

The Book of Nature and Scripture and its Kabbalist misinterpretation is what we are against as it relates to many of the roots of these heresies.

Kabbalah's Influence on the Development of Modern Science

Lesson 1 – Part C

The Zohar describes (Zohar, VaYikra) that the Earth rolls as a ball, so while some are on top others are down; and while for some people the sun shines, for others it is dark; and there is a place where there is daylight all the time except, for a little time of darkness. The Zohar also says that there are seven continents and one of them is not populated. (Because it is based on Sexigismal Babylonian Numerology--CSR)

We have to remember that those things were said in the 2nd century C. E. – a time when people thought the world was flat. Saying such things was much more than a new idea it was viewed as hallucinatory. However, this helps us to understand one aspect of how Kabbalah influenced the modern era.

The Zohar and the Discovery of America

One of the most famous icons symbolizing the end of the insular and dark era of the middle ages is the discovery of America. The leader of this historic campaign was Christopher Columbus, who went bravely and without fear of "falling into the other side" (because the world is flat) toward the west in order to find India.

Rabbi Abraham Zacuto was an instructor and mentor to Columbus. At the end of the 15th century, the great astronomers and navigators were Kabbalists, a guild whose knowledge of the stars and The Book of Formation (Sefer Yetsira) gave them great expertise in astronomy and navigation. Rabbi Abraham Zacuto was among the leading scholars of that time who made the connection between science and the knowledge of Judaism. He had a great influence on the royals of Spain and Portugal that financed the quests for discovering new lands. Being a Kabbalist, Rabbi Abraham Zacuto received his knowledge about the earth from the Zohar. It is clear that the knowledge he had, he passed on to his students and Christopher Columbus was among them. He was also the one who advised King Manuel I of Portugal to send Vasco da Gama to his historic journey around Africa and guided Vasco da Gama and prepared him for the famous journey.

The Da Vinci Code and the Zohar

Many books have been written about the history of science and the link between the popularity of Kabbalah in 17th century Europe (among non Jewish scholars) and the foundations of science the way we know it today. An evidence for that can be found in many principles mentioned in the best seller "The Da Vinci Code" whose origins are found in Kabbalah. In another best seller, "Jews, God and History", Max I. Dimont claims that studying Kabbalah in the 17th century contributed to the scientific revolution of that century. Earlier, the Zohar was translated to Latin and was very widespread among European scholars. The Zohar's approach toward the exemplary order of universal rules and the fact that nothing happens without a reason influenced many in the birth of research looking for consistency and a reason for every phenomenon in the world.

Anyone who considered himself to be a leading scholar in the world of science in 17th century Europe learned Kabbalah. Science in those days mixed several fields of mysticism, alchemy, etc. Secret orders of that time, such as the Freemasons, learned and developed their own interpretation of the Zohar and the basics of Kabbalah in order to maintain control of human's destiny and bring an end to human suffering.

Kabbalah: Newton, Leibniz and others

In his book, "The religion of Isaac Newton", Frank E. Manuel writes that Isaac Newton was convinced that Moses knew and controlled all of the secrets of science. He also believed that on Mt. Sinai we were not given a religion but, the knowledge and the secrets to control the forces of nature. Newton invested most of his time trying to solve the secrets of Kabbalah and finding the connection between the building of the Mishkan (The Tabernacle – a portable temple carried by the Israelites in their journeys), mentioned in the book of Exodus, and the rules of the universe and its structure; and he was not the only one. Leibniz, father of modern mathematics, also wrote that the perfect society of the future, called Utopia would be based on Kabbalah, mathematics, mysticism and mechanics; meaning that the people, who established modern science, learned and based their knowledge on Kabbalah.

Those philosophers were convinced that the ancient Kabbalists had a tremendous influence on important philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato and whenever humanity leapt forward, it was Kabbalah that pushed, inspired and lead to a new revolution, which supported humanity in another step toward the final goal of completeness and peace.
