A new volume has recently been published of 12 pieces by the late Kurt Vonnegut Jr., entitled Armageddon in Retrospect (G.P. Putnam & Sons, 2008). Many people that in bygone days took the time and effort to read and think will have read such Vonnegut classics as Slaughterhouse Five, which is a fictionalized account of the author's experiences right in the middle of the Allied firebombing of Dresden and his subsequent capture by the Germans.

This new book contains a letter dated May 29, 1945 and headed "FROM: Pfc. K. Vonnegut, Jr., TO: Kurt Vonnegut," that details his experiences and observations. Anyone concerned with getting to the bottom of what happened to Dresden and in the prison camps will surely be keenly interested to read Vonnegut's matter-of-fact accounting of his capture, transport in a cattle car, and processing as a POW, where he endured "scalding delousing showers. Many men died from shock in the showers after 10 days of starvation, thirst and exposure. But I didn't."

It seems young Pfc. Vonnegut experienced the notorious "gas chambers" and didn't even know it. Surely his progeny should be considered Holocaust(TM) survivors and be paid reparations.
Take heed to yourself lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither you go, lest it become a snare in the midst of you.

Wow Kol, thats one hell of a find, any news on how this was found, or if perhaps someone released this after his death intentionally?  Who found it anyway?  GREAT discovery.

You can find the quote in a NY Times book review (scroll down near the bottom of page 1):

I don't have the book yet, but it's on its way. I'm a big Vonnegut fan.

Ha! Funny but sad.

I ordered the book. This is serious ammunition for illustrating how underfed, malnourished captives dying from the shock of delousing showers could have easily been twisted even by honest but fearful fellow prisoners into claims that detainees were "gassed."

Quote from: "Canard"Did you get that book yet Kol ?
Yep. It arrived, and I read that letter first. It's very short and there is no further elaboration on the camps.

The rest of the book is a mixed bag, but it's KVJ (not to be confused with the KJV, haha) so it's all worthwhile. It's a slim volume so it doesn't take much effort to get through. I also picked up the last book he released during his lifetime, and I'm going to re-read Hocus-Pocus as soon as I can find another copy. Vonnegut was such a wonderful mind and writer I can forgive his pinko-commie tendencies.

There's so much I want to read, but I'm super busy and only have limited time and especially limited energy to focus after all the essential tasks and priorities are taken care of.
