John Galliano was sacked as chief designer of Christian Dior last night after a series of claims that he had subjected women to tirades of anti-Semitic abuse.

Hours before his dismissal, the British fashion designer had been denounced by Israel-born actress Natalie Portman, who is the face of a Dior perfume.

The 29-year-old Oscar winner told of her 'disgust' at a video which appeared to show Galliano abusing two women.

Shocked: Actress Natalie Portman, left, has cut off from designer John Galliano after he allegedly launched anti-Semitic attacks on at least four women in Paris

The alleged victims said the 50-year-old, who thought they were Jewish, told them he 'loves Hitler' and that their parents should have been 'gassed'.

Yesterday, the fashion house took decisive action. Chief executive Sidney Toledano said: 'I very firmly condemn what was said by John Galliano, which totally contradicts the values which have always been defended by Christian Dior.  <:^0

'Because of the particularly odious nature of John Galliano's behaviour and views, in a video made public on Monday, Christian Dior has decided to lay him off at once and has commenced formal dismissal procedures.'

Galliano, who has been named British designer of the year four times, had insisted on Monday that he was 'no racist'.

But Miss Portman, who won Best Actress for her role in Black Swan at Sunday night's Academy Awards, said in a statement: 'In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way.  :^)   <:^0

'I hope at the very least these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.'

The controversy began after Galliano, who counts Kylie Minogue and Kate Moss among his friends, allegedly insulted Geraldine Bloch, 35, and Philippe Virgitti, 41, at a Paris bar called La Perle, last Thursday.

It is claimed he told Miss Bloch: 'Dirty Jew, you should be dead.'

He is then said to have told Mr Virgitti, who is of Asian origin: '******* Asian bastard, I'm going to kill you.'

Then this week, a video emerged of Mr Galliano at the same bar in December. In it, he says to two unnamed Italian women: 'People like you ought to be dead, your mothers, your forefathers would all be ******* gassed. I love Hitler.' One of their male companions was so shocked that he started recording the incident on video.

An unnamed 48-year-old woman has also made a formal complaint to police that she was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse by Galliano at the same bar in October. She is believed to have come forward after publicity about Miss Bloch's case.

Ironically none of the four women involved is Jewish, although the alleged verbal assaults took place in Le Marais, Paris's traditional Jewish quarter.

On Friday, Galliano launched a counter-claim in a civil court in Paris for defamation against Miss Bloch and Mr Virgitti.

And on Monday, he visited a police station there to meet some of his accusers, but insisted: 'I'm no racist.'

Galliano, who was born in Gibraltar and brought up in South London, has been one of the world's foremost celebrity designers. Close friends include Miss Minogue, for whom he has designed clothes, as well as Madonna and supermodels including Miss Moss, Helena Christensen and Naomi Campbell.

Models were so enthused by his creations that they are said to have regularly waived their usual couture appearance fees to appear in his clothes.

Private clients also included Princess Diana, as well as France's First Lady, Carla Bruni.

Miss Portman was an ambassador for his own brand, along with actresses Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard.

Pop singer Rihanna recently wore a gown from Galliano's flower-themed autumn/winter 2011 haute couture collection to the Brit Awards.

Miss Moss has reportedly asked Galliano to design her dress for her wedding to guitarist Jamie Hince.

Galliano produces work under his own label, as well as that of Dior. He produces six couture and ready-to-wear collections a year.

The designer has appeared on the Independent newspaper's Pink List for being one of the most influential gay people in Britain.
QuoteFROM HUMBLE ROOTS: THE RISE OF JOHN GALLIANO
John Galliano

John Galliano transcended his humble roots to become one of the most powerful men in fashion.

The Gibraltar-born designer, pictured, who once defined style as wearing 'an evening dress to McDonalds', grew up in south London the son of a plumber who had come to England looking for work.

He has often mentioned the influence of his Spanish mother who dressed him and his sisters in immaculately pressed and starched clothes whenever they left the family home.

He worked as a dresser at the National Theatre and threw himself into the London club scene - experiences that left their mark on his sense of style.

But it was as a student at the capital's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design that he was first noticed with a degree collection influenced by revolutionary France.

He was a runaway success but became disillusioned with the British fashion scene after a financial backer withdrew support, and moved to Paris in 1990.

Five years later he was appointed head of Dior - the first Englishman to head one of France's fashion flagships.

The news sent shockwaves through the fashion world but did not seem to affect the supremely confident Galliano.

His long-time creative collaborator Amanda Harlech once described disagreeing with him, saying: 'I did only once and I can only compare it to being hit by a massive surfing wave. His indifference was absolute.'

His confidence brought him celebrity supporters with actresses including Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard wearing his designs and reports Kate Moss had asked him to design her a wedding dress.

After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. "John Galliano believes his reliance on drugs such as Valium, combined with binge drinking, ultimately caused his highly offensive behaviour"  <:^0

British fashion designer John Galliano will try to avoid prison when he appears in court charged with anti-Semitism tomorrow by claiming he was taking anti-depressants 'like they were candy'.

The 50-year-old couture star is convinced that his reliance on drugs such as Valium, combined with binge drinking, made him 'ill' and ultimately caused his highly offensive behaviour.

But Paris prosecutors will, in turn, portray Galliano as an outspoken bigot whose deep prejudices rose to the surface while he was drunk.  <:^0

<$> Anti-Jewish <$>  behaviour is a criminal offence in France, meaning the multi-millionaire bachelor faces a six-month jail spell, as well as a £21,000 fine if found guilty of hurling 'public insults based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity' of three people.

Galliano regularly appears at packed shows in front of the world's fashion press, and hundreds of journalists are expected to witness his ordeal in number 17th Chamber of the historic Paris Correctional Court.

Galliano has apologised profusely for insulting people, but in March he was sacked as creative dictator of fashion empire Dior.

In February, he is said to have called Geraldine Bloch, a museum curator, a 'dirty Jew' and her boyfriend, receptionist Philippe Virgitti, an 'Asian bastard' during a drunken rant in La Perle, a bar next door to his Paris flat.

In February, the designer is said to have called Geraldine Bloch, a museum curator, a 'dirty Jew' and her boyfriend, receptionist Philippe Virgitti, an 'Asian bastard' during a drunken rant in La Perle, a bar next door to his Paris flat

An unnamed 47-year-old French woman, who is thought to be a Paris shop worker, has also come forward to say that she suffered a similar verbal attack in the same bar last October.

All three witnesses are set to give evidence in person in court.

After the allegations were made, a video emerged of Galliano apparently telling two Italian women that their forebears should have been 'gassed', and 'I love Hitler'.

Neither of the women has pressed charges, but the video will play an important part in the prosecution case.

Galliano has since sacked his Jewish lawyer, Stephane Zerbib, after accusing him of stealing up to £2.5million from his bank account.

High-profile friends: John Galliano with model Kate Moss

His new lawyer Aurelien Hamelle said today: 'It's clear that John Galliano was ill when this happened.

'He had a triple addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepine (Valium) and sleeping pills.

'The combined effect of these drugs left him in a state of complete and utter abandon.'

Faced with mounting commercial pressures at Dior, and his eponymous label, Galliano came to rely more and more on alcohol, and was swallowing Valium tranquilizer pills 'like they were candy', said Mr Hamelle.

'When he was in this state, he had no way of knowing or remembering what he said. Every witness at the cafe has said he was acting out of character.'

Mr Hamelle said he had watched the video with his client, and both remained 'baffled' by it, with Galliano not remembering any of it.

Ms Bloch's lawyer,Yves Beddouk, said his client was not interested in money, and solely wanted 1 euro (around 90p) of symbolic damages.

She also wanted the court's decision published in the French and international press, as well as in fashion magazines such as Elle and Vogue.

Mr Beddouk said: 'Galliano considered that he was on his own territory, and that people he didn't like had no right to be there.

'When you've got such a big reputation, you need to be even more respectful and cautious than ordinary people.'  <:^0

Since the incidents, Galliano has been having treatment for alcohol and drug dependency.

Mr Hamelle said his client had been sober for three months and was 'rebuilding himself' after treatment in the U.S for his addiction.

The court case is expected to last an afternoon, with a judgement being handed down in September.

Stephane Zerbib , left, who was acting as John Galliano's lawyer, was fired by the fashion designer just weeks before trial
