Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading

Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading, GCB, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, PC, KC (10 October 1860 – 30 December 1935), was an English lawyer, jurist and politician. Lord Reading was the last Liberal Foreign Secretary. He was the first Jew to be appointed to the British cabinet.   <$>

Biography

The son of a Jewish fruit merchant at Spitalfields  <:^0 , Rufus Daniel Isaacs was educated at University College School, and then entered the family business at the age of fifteen. In 1876–77 he served as a ships-boy and later worked as a jobber on the stock-exchange, 1880–84. He was called to the Bar, the Middle Temple, in 1887.[1]Lord Reading married Alice Edith Cohen in 1887. Alice, Lady Reading, appointed GBE, was a chronic invalid, who eventually died of cancer in 1927, a year after Reading's viceroyalty ended, after 40 years of marriage. He then married Stella Charnaud, the first Lady Reading's secretary. Stella Isaacs was later made a life peeress as Baroness Swanborough, of Swanborough, County Sussex, and later a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE). His second marriage lasted until his own death in 1935. Isaacs lived at Foxhill House in Earley, adjoining Reading, and was elevated to the Peerage as Baron Reading, of Erleigh in the County of Berkshire, in 1914, and continued to rise in the Peerage: he was created Viscount Reading, of Erleigh in the County of Berkshire, in 1916; Earl of Reading along with the subsidiary title of Viscount Erleigh, of Erleigh in the County of Berkshire, in 1917; and eventually Marquess of Reading in 1926. This is the highest rank in the Peerage reached by a Jew in British history. He was knighted in 1910, made a KCVO in 1911, a GCB in 1915, a GCSI and GCIE in 1921 (upon appointment as Viceroy of India) and a GCVO in 1922.

Legal and political career

Isaacs was one of several high-ranking members of the Liberal government accused of involvement in the Marconi scandal.[3] An article published in Le Matin on 14 February 1913 alleged corruption in the award of a government contract to the Marconi Company and insider trading in Marconi's shares, implicating a number of sitting government ministers, including Lloyd George, the Chancellor of the Exchequer; Isaacs, then Attorney General; Herbert Samuel, Postmaster General; and the Treasurer of the Liberal Party, the Master of Elibank, Lord Murray.[4] The allegations included the fact that Isaacs' brother, Godfrey Isaacs, was managing director of the Marconi company at the time that the cabinet, in which Isaacs sat, awarded Marconi the contract.[5][6] Isaacs and Samuels sued Le Matin for libel, and as a result, the journal apologised and printed a complete retraction in its 18 February 1913 issue.[4][7][8] The factual matters were at least partly resolved by a parliamentary select committee investigation, which issued three reports: all found that Isaacs and others had purchased shares in the American Marconi company, but while the fellow-Liberal members of the committee cleared the ministers of all blame, the opposition members reported that Isaacs and others had acted with "grave impropriety".[4] It was not made public during the trial that these shares had been made available through Isaacs's brother at a favourable price.[9]

In 1918, Isaacs was appointed Ambassador to the United States, a position in which he served until 1919, while continuing at the same time as Lord Chief Justice. In 1921, he resigned the chief justiceship to become Viceroy of India. Although he preferred a conciliatory policy, he ended up using force on several occasions, and imprisoned Mahatma Gandhi in 1922. In MacDonald's National Government in August 1931, he briefly served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, but stood down after the first major reshuffle in November due to ill-health.

Palestine Electric Corporation

Along with Alfred Mond and Herbert Samuel, Isaacs was a founding chairman of the Palestine Electric Corporation, precursor to the Israel Electric Corporation in the British Mandate of Palestine. The Reading Power Station in Tel Aviv, Israel, was named in his honour.

One of Prince Charles's former aides says that he is a very "laissez-faire father" to his two sons. "He likes Kate a lot, but she won't be getting any 'training' or guidance as to how to behave," says this person.

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton is the eldest of three children, sister to Pippa, a party organizer, and James, 21, who also works for Party Pieces. The Middleton parents are unpretentious people, according to a family friend. Michael Middleton grew up in Leeds, and his father was a pilot. Carole Middleton grew up initially in Southall, London; her father, Ron Goldsmith, was a builder, and her mother, Dorothy, was a store clerk.  :^)  Michael and Carole met while working for the former British airline BOAC. Carole was a stewardess, Michael a steward, who would later train to become a pilot. When the couple had James, in 1987, Carole came up with the idea of starting a mail-order business that would sell partyware--paper hats, glitter, themed costumes, etc. The success of Party Pieces would allow the Middletons to purchase the five-bedroom house in Bucklebury and make them millionaires.

It is a close-knit family. They frequently go on vacation to the Caribbean island of Mustique, where observers see them out late laughing, clearly having a good time. Significantly, no one in the village of Bucklebury has ever gossiped to the press about them--which, according to Adam Helliker, shows how "squeaky clean" they are. When William comes to visit, the Middletons stop in at the Yew Tree pub. None of the locals ever bother them.

QuoteMond Isaacs, Eva Violet, Second Marchioness of Reading

1895 – 1973
Discuss

by Natasha Lehrer

Lady Eva Violet Mond Isaacs, née Melchett, Marchioness of Reading, was born into one remarkable family and married into another. She occupied a unique place in Anglo-Jewry; as Vice President of the World Jewish Congress and President of its British section she was an eloquent and vocal supporter of the Zionist cause and the young state of Israel.

Eva's mother Violet, née Goetz, was a strict Anglican of Huguenot origin; her father Alfred Mond (1868–1930) was Jewish, the son of the German-born chemist Ludwig Mond (1839–1909), who invented the alloy nickel and founded the Brunner Mond Company, which merged into ICI in 1926. The Monds lived in the affluent area of St. John's Wood in London. Alfred and Violet were married in church in 1892 and moved to Lowndes Square in Chelsea. Violet was musical and artistic, and the house was filled with remarkable works of art, including paintings by Mantegna and Bellini. She organized extraordinary parties; her guests included Princess Helena Victoria and Sir Thomas Beecham was invited to conduct the music.

Eva was born in August 1895. Her early years were filled with comforts, governesses and holidays at her grandfather Ludwig Mond's Palazzo Zuccari, near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Her education followed the traditional lines of a wealthy young girl of her era; in her early years she was taught at home by a governess, before being sent to Miss Wolff's, in South Audley Street, and then to boarding school at Northlands at Englefield Green. At seventeen she was sent to finishing school in Paris and a year later, in 1913, she was sent for a year to finishing school in Munich.

Just before leaving for Munich, Eva joined her family on a holiday to Scotland. It was there that she met Gerald Isaacs (1889–1960), the elder son of Sir Rufus Isaacs (1860–1935), then Attorney General in Asquith's Liberal government. Alfred Mond was also a Liberal, although by 1926 he had broken with the Liberal party in protest at the Land Policy, and joined the Conservatives. A close friend of Chaim Weizmann, Mond increasingly focused his political energies on Zionist activities.

The following summer Alfred Mond rented Palace Court at Beaulieu from Lord Montagu and invited Gerald to stay, where the courting continued. A church wedding was planned after Eva's "coming out" in 1914 (she was presented at Court in May) but with the outbreak of war the wedding was postponed. Just before the wedding the Archbishop of Canterbury refused to authorise a Church wedding between Eva, a practising Christian, and Gerald, a Jew. After a civil ceremony the marriage was blessed in Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street.

The first years of Eva and Gerald's marriage were spent in Berkamsted, where Gerald did his military service until he was moved to the war office in London. In 1916 Eva, with her new-born baby Michael, moved out of London, first to her father's house Melchet Hall in Hampshire, then to Sussex to await the birth of her second child, Joan, in 1918. Their third child, Elizabeth, was born in 1921. It was her own experiences as a mother of three, combined with the extreme levels of child poverty she had witnessed when she accompanied her father canvassing in his constituency in Chester and then Swansea, that focused her objectives to improve the conditions of working women and their children. In 1929 Gerald ran (unsuccessfully) for parliament in Blackburn. Though the cotton mills were vast employers of women, Eva was horrified to see that there was no childcare available at all for these workers and that their children's welfare was suffering greatly as a result. Violet, Eva's mother, was also involved in child welfare charities and Eva became increasingly involved in the Sunbabies Home in Hoxton and in other organizations.

QuoteAfter Gerald's father Rufus, Lord Reading, became Viceroy of India, Eva and Gerald made two trips there, in 1922 and 1924, leaving the children behind and staying for two months each time. Meanwhile, the involvement of Eva's father Alfred Mond with Zionism led him to take several trips to Palestine. Eva accompanied him on her first visit in 1928. The journey took them through Egypt, Syria and Iraq; with her mother she visited many sites of Christian interest along the way and in Palestine. She recalls in her autobiography her intense disappointment when she visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre: "Looking back I think that it was the beginning of the psychological struggle between my Christian upbringing and my growing Jewish consciousness."

On her return to London she began to study Hebrew with David Kaminsky
, a student at the London School of Economics who went on to run her father's plantation near Tiberias. Although enthusiasm did not make up for lack of aptitude and she never picked up more than the most basic elements of the language, Eva became a committed and active Zionist at around this time. She returned to Palestine the following year, accompanying Gerald who was a member of the Shaw Commission, which was attempting to formulate a policy for Palestine. On her return she became Chair of the National Society of Day Nurseries, President of the Nursery Nurses Training Colleges and a member of the National Society for Maternity and Child Welfare. It is shocking today to realize how much more political commitment there was in Britain seventy years ago to the question of childcare and welfare than there is today, a fact that Eva herself bemoaned not long before she died. She also became involved in the Jerusalem Baby Home and the Tel Aviv Mothercraft Society.

QuoteAfter Alfred Mond's death in 1930, Eva went to Palestine in 1931 with Chaim and vera weizmann to visit the house Alfred had built in Tiberias, Migdal. Her brother Henry (1898–1949) also came out on his first visit to Palestine then, and became passionate about the country. Eva was amazed to discover in September 1933 that Henry had converted to Judaism without telling her. She too was going through the conversion process; both siblings were determined not to influence the other with their decision and thus neither had confided in the other. Soon afterwards Eva converted with the rabbi of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St. John's Wood. Of her three children, only her elder daughter Joan followed her mother by converting to Judaism.

Eva began to visit Migdal every spring, always inviting guests to join her, including George Bernard Shaw (about whose visit she had few positive remarks to make), Orde Wingate, Chaim Arlosoroff and David Ben-Gurion. After the establishment of the state, when she was in residence, she flew the Union Jack and the Israeli flag over the villa, which during World War II was at various times taken over by the Palmah and by the British Army.

With the death of Gerald's father Lord Reading in 1935, the couple became the Second Marquis and Marchioness of Reading. Her new-found aristocratic status did not prevent Eva from continuing to balance both her Zionist commitments and her involvement in child welfare. In 1937 Eva and Henry went to the Twentieth Zionist Congress in Zurich. Henry became Chairman of the Jewish Agency and Eva Chair of the British section. She also became involved in helen bentwich's Children's Refugee Movement which brought children from Germany to the UK in the years leading up to World War II. In 1942 she was invited to become advisor to Ernest Brown, then Minister of Health, on daycare issues. In 1945 Queen Mary invited her to become Chair of the Needlework Guild and in 1947 she became Vice President of the World Jewish Congress. She joined the National Council of Women and in 1957 became the first Jewish president in its history. The previous year she was awarded the CBE for her work in children's welfare.

Her brother's early death in 1949 at the age of fifty-one deprived her of her closest Zionist partner, since her husband Gerald had never shared her passion for Palestine/Israel, although he did occasionally accompany her on her visits there before his sudden death in 1960 whilst they were on holiday in Rhodes.

In 1971, two years before her death, she was awarded an honorary fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At the ceremony it was said that "throughout her lifetime she has devoted herself wholeheartedly to the promotion of Jewish rights all over the world—to the attainment of the Jewish people's vision—the reconstruction of its ancient homeland in sovereign independence. ... Her services to the Jewish people have been a central expression of her devotion to human rights and human dignity throughout the world and particularly to the rights of women." Eva, Dowager Marchioness of Reading, died on August 14, 1973.

Rufus Philip Isaacs

Rufus Philip Isaacs (1914-1981) was a game theorist especially prominent in the 1950s and 1960s with his work on differential games.

 Biography

He worked for the RAND Corporation from 1948 until winter 1954/1955. His investigation stemmed from classic pursuit-evasion type zero-sum dynamic two player games such as the Princess and monster game. In 1942, He married Rose Barcov, and they had two daughters.

His work in pure mathematics included working with monodiffric functions, fractional order mappings, graph theory, analytic functions, and number theory. In graph theory he constructed the first two infinite families of snarks. In applied mathematics, he worked with aerodynamics, elasticity, optimization, and differential games, which he is most known for. He received his bachelors from MIT in 1936, and received his MA and PhD from Columbia University in 1942 and 1942 respectively. His first post after the war ended was at Notre Dame, but he left in 1947 due to salary issues. While at RAND, much of his work was classified, and thus remained unknown until the publication of his classic text on differential games a decade after leaving RAND. His career after RAND was spent largely in the defense and avionics industries. While at RAND, he worked with researchers including Richard E. Bellman, Leonard D. Berkovitz, David H. Blackwell, John M. Danskin, Melvin Dresher, Wendell H. Fleming, Irving L. Glicksberg, Oliver A. Gross, Samuel Karlin, John W. Milnor, John F. Nash, and Lloyd S. Shapley. His work has influenced such fundamental economic concepts as dynamic programming (Richard E. Bellman) and the Pontryagin maximum principle (Breitner 2005).  <:^0
