I went old school on sat and played around on a telnet site for afew hours. If you know what a shell account is, this place offers them for free but somewhat limited.

download a program such as putty or if your windows has it, hyperterminal or telnet. They have mud games, card games, chat/lobby, a irc server, mail system, free webpage etc etc. You'll need to be familar with some unix but it's not so much dissimilar to dos, it may take awhile for you to work out how to use some of the programs there.

So if you have putty, type 'putty.exe sdf.org:23' and you'll be there.
