The Islamist rebels from the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and the Syrian Al-Qaeda group "Jabhat Al-Nusra" have benefitted immensely from their truce with the predominately Kurdish "People's Protection Units" (YPG) northern Aleppo; however, this changed on Thursday when the aforementioned Islamist groups kidnapped members of Jaysh Al-Thuwar near the border-city of 'Azaz.

On Thursday afternoon, the YPG and Jaysh Al-Thuwar struck the Turkish backed rebels in northern Aleppo, targeting the Jabhat Al-Nusra and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham controlled villages of Kashta'ar, Al-Ziyara, and Mulkiyah near the city of 'Azaz; this has further aggravated the aggressive Turkish government , who has specifically targeted the Kurdish resistance fighters for several months all over northern Syria.

The YPG and Jaysh Al-Thuwwar have been repeatedly targeted by the Turkish Air Force in several Syrian provinces, despite their commitment to combatting the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) in the Al-Raqqa and Al-Hasakah Governorate.

Several social media activists from the Syrian Opposition have reported that the Russian Air Force has struck the Islamist rebel groups at the border-city of 'Azaz; this was confirmed by a military source from the Syrian Air Defense in the coastal city of Jableh (Latakia Governorate).

Previously, tensions between the Kurdish resistance fighters and the Islamist rebels were only reported in the Sheikh Maqsoud District of Aleppo City; this recent confrontation marks the first time that both sides have fought one another in northern Aleppo.
