Taharrush jamaʿi (Arabic: ‏تحرش جماعي‎‎ taḥarrush jamāʿī, Egyptian pronunciation taḥarrush game'a, lit. "collective harassment") is a type of sexual assault in company (group sexual assault/gang rape) where a group of sexual perpetrators commit a sexual assault under the protective cover provided by large gatherings or crowds,[1] typically mass events, including protests, rallies, concerts, or public festivals (religious and non-religious).

Terminology[edit]

The use of the word "harassment" (instead of "sexual assault" or "rape") in the terminology as used in the Arabic language (Taharrush gamea, lit. "collective harassment") is noted to derive from the Egyptian view that it is as a kind of "'lighter' sexual abuse or gang rape"[2] of Egyptian women (and in some cases foreign journalists) who are surrounded by groups of young men, often having been touched with sexual intent and partly undressed, stripped naked and gang raped.[3][1]
Occurrence[edit]
Arab and Muslim world[edit]

Taharrush jamaʿi is said to have originated in Muslim majority countries of the Arab and non-Arab world, particularly Egypt. Victims include foreign and local females, including both women and girls. Among local victims whose religious background is Muslim, it has been reported that the perpetrators assulted their victims irrespective of whether the victim is veiled or unveiled, "with Jadaliyya reporting that large groups of men attacked both veiled and unveiled women during holiday festivities following Ramadan in 2006".[4][verification needed]

The phenomenon first came to the attention of Western media after an instance of an Egyptian taharrush jama'i attack hit headlines when a prominent female foreigner, CBS reporter Lara Logan, was assulted by hundreds of men in Cairo's Tahrir Square during her reporting of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.[5]
Europe[edit]

Reports by the North Rhine-Westphalia interior ministry and the German Federal Criminal Police Office attributed the New Year's Eve sexual assaults in Germany to the practice.[6][7] The perpetrators were said to have been "almost exclusively" of "North African and Arab" recently arrived migrant background.[7] A similar situation was the 2015 Swedish Music Festival sexual assaults.
