New San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) Chancellor Carlos O. Cortez has announced the cancellation of his upcoming investiture ceremony at Petco Park over controversy surrounding the participation of planned keynote speaker Alice Walker — who has troubling track record of antisemitic expressions in recent years.

"Over the past few weeks, concerns have been expressed about the political beliefs and writings of the investiture keynote speaker, Alice Walker," a statement published by Cortez on Monday said. "At the same time, others have expressed their support of Ms. Walker. As a district that celebrates inclusion, we believe the best way forward would be to cancel the event altogether. I apologize for the pain caused to any member of our community. The investiture scheduled for May 31 will not be held."

In the past decade, Walker — the author most famous for her 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple — has endorsed the work of British antisemitic conspiracy theorist David Icke.

Walker also penned a poem in 2017 — titled "It Is Our (Frightful) Duty to Study the Talmud" https://alicewalkersgarden.com/2017/11/it-is-our-frightful-duty-to-study-the-talmud/  – containing numerous problematic passages about both the Jewish people and State of Israel.

She wrote, "Are Goyim (us) meant to be slaves of Jews, and not only / That, but to enjoy it?"

Walker also described Israel's treatment of the Palestinians as "a cruel example of what may be done / With impunity, and without conscience / By a Chosen people."

The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) has launched a campaign to gather messages of gratitude to Chancellor Cortez for not allowing the San Diego Community College District to be used as a venue for the dissemination of antisemitic hatred.
