Israeli forces have shot dead Al Jazeera's journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Abu Akleh, a longtime TV correspondent for Al Jazeera Arabic, was killed on Wednesday while covering Israeli army raids in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

She was rushed to a hospital in Jenin in critical condition, where she was declared dead shortly after, at 7:15am (4:15 GMT), according to the ministry and Al Jazeera journalists.

Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest and was standing with other journalists when she was killed.

The head of the medicine department at al-Najah University in Nablus confirmed that Abu Akleh was shot in the head. He said that her body was transferred for an autopsy based on an order from the public prosecution.

Another Al Jazeera journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, was also wounded by a bullet in the back at the scene. He is now in stable condition.

'No confrontations'
Al-Samoudi and other journalists at the scene said there were no Palestinian fighters present when the journalists were shot, directly disputing an Israeli statement referencing the possibility that it was Palestinian fire.

"We were going to film the Israeli army operation and suddenly they shot us without asking us to leave or stop filming," said al-Samoudi.

"The first bullet hit me and the second bullet hit Shireen ... there was no Palestinian military resistance at all at the scene."

Shatha Hanaysha, a local journalist who was standing next to Abu Akleh when she was shot, also told Al Jazeera that there had been no confrontations between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army. She said the group of journalists had been directly targeted.

"We were four journalists, we were all wearing vests, all wearing helmets," Hanaysha said. "The [Israeli] occupation army did not stop firing even after she collapsed. I couldn't even extend my arm to pull her because of the shots being fired. The army was adamant on shooting to kill."

The details of Abu Akleh's killing are still emerging, but videos of the incident show that she was shot in the head, said Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim.

"What we know for now is that the Palestinian health ministry has announced her death. Shireen Abu Akleh was covering the events unfolding in Jenin, specifically, an Israeli raid on the city, which is north of the occupied West Bank, when she was hit by a bullet to the head," Ibrahim said, speaking from the Palestinian city of Ramallah.

In her last email to the network, Abu Akleh sent a message to Al Jazeera's Ramallah bureau at 6:13 a.m. in which she wrote: "Occupation forces storm Jenin and besiege a house in the Jabriyat neighbourhood. On the way there – I will bring you news as soon as the picture becomes clear."

Separately on Wednesday in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said an 18 year old Palestinian, Thaer Mislet-Yazouri, was shot by Israeli forces in the town of el-Bireh, near the illegal settlement of Psagot.

Shock and grief
Abu Akleh, who was a dual Palestinian-American national, was one of Al Jazeera's first field correspondents, joining the network in 1997.

Grief and sorrow filled the Al Jazeera offices in downtown Ramallah as the news quickly spread and dozens of colleagues, fellow journalists, friends, and Palestinian figures poured in, including Palestinian politicians Hanan Ashrawi and Khalida Jarrar.

Palestinian MP Khalida Jarrar said that Abu Akleh was the voice of Palestinians and was killed by "the monstrosity of Israeli colonialism and occupation".

"Shireen was always my voice from the prison cells," Jarrar told Al Jazeera, adding that a month into her last detention by Israel, Shireen was the first person she saw at her court hearings.

"Shireen was our voice. It is unbelievable. It is a crime, it is all clear – intentional and direct targeting. She was targeted. It's clear," said Jarrar.

One of Abu Akleh's former colleagues, Mohammad Hawwash, who knew her for more than 25 years, said she was a "real journalist".

"Shereen was a professional and unbiased journalist who conveyed the reality and events as they are," Hawwash, 70, told Al Jazeera.

The Israeli military said its soldiers had come under attack with heavy gunfire and explosives while operating in Jenin, and that they fired back. It added that it was "investigating the event".

The Palestinian presidency condemned the killing, saying in a statement that it holds the Israeli occupation responsible.

Palestinian Authority (PA) government spokesperson Ibrahim Melhem described it as a "comprehensive crime committed against a well-known journalist".

"The killing was deliberate... There will be an autopsy by Palestinian medics, which will be followed by a report including all the details of the killing," Melhem told Al Jazeera. "However, all the witnesses present at the scene of the crime ensures that it was an Israeli sniper that committed the crime in a deliberate way."

Yair Lapid, the Israeli foreign minister, said Tel Aviv was offering a "joint pathological investigation" into Abu Akleh's "sad death". He added that "journalists must be protected in conflict zones".

Al Jazeera's offices in the Gaza Strip, in a building that also housed the Associated Press, were bombed by Israeli forces during an offensive a year ago, and Palestinian and international journalists say they have been regularly targeted by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

Many in Palestine and abroad took to social media to express their shock and grief.

"Israeli occupation forces assassinated our beloved journalist Shireen Abu Akleh while covering their brutality in Jenin this morning. Shireen was most prominent Palestinian journalist and a close friend," wrote Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the United Kingdom.

https://twitter.com/hzomlot/status/1524247898346737666?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1524247898346737666%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aljazeera.com%2Fnews%2F2022%2F5%2F11%2Fshireen-abu-akleh-israeli-forces-kill-al-jazeera-journalist

Those who knew her described her as brave, kind and a voice for the Palestinians.

"Shireen was a brave, kind and high integrity journalist that I and millions of Palestinians grew up watching," wrote Fadi Quran, an activist at the campaign group, Avaaz.

"Horrified to hear of Israel's killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin! Shireen has boldly covered Israel's aggression in Palestine for over two decades," wrote Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian-American activist and lawyer.

"In disbelief," wrote Salem Barahmeh, a Palestinian activist. "We grew up to her reporting on the second intifada. She was our voice. Rest in power and peace. Another day, another tragedy."

UN Rapporteur on Palestine: Shireen Abu Akleh's Killing is 'Potential War Crime'
https://www.palestinechronicle.com/un-rapporteur-on-palestine-shireen-abu-aklehs-killing-is-potential-war-crime/

The killing of prominent Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is a "potential war crime", UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, said in an interview with a Turkish news agency on Wednesday.

Albanese, who last month succeeded her predecessor Professor Michael Lynk, told the Anadolu Agency that Abu Akleh's killing constitutes a "serious violation of international humanitarian law and is potentially a war crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court."

"The tragic death of Shireen Abu Akleh is yet another serious attack on journalism and freedom of expression and the right to life and safety in the occupied Palestinian territories," said Albanese.

Quote"Abu Akleh's killing must be thoroughly investigated in a transparent, rigorous and independent manner," Albanese continued asserting that "it is the right moment to demand that the illegal occupation of Palestine be dismantled."

Abu Akleh was assassinated by Israeli occupation forces in Jenin. Abu Akleh's colleagues who witnessed the killing said that she was hit by an Israeli sniper who had pinned them down on the street where the veteran journalist was killed.

Al Mayadeen correspondent in occupied Al-Quds reported on a military crackdown and harassment of mourners during the funeral of Palestinian journalist and martyr Shireen Abu Akleh near the besieged French hospital.

Our correspondent said that the occupation forces stormed the hospital, confirming that the funeral procession was stormed and disrupted as the hospital got besieged.

She indicated that the large crowds of Palestinians gathered in front of the French hospital to participate in the procession, where Israeli occupation forces were heavily deployed in front of the hospital as they attempted to disperse and prevent crowds from walking the coffin through the streets.

Nonetheless, she reported, "crowds of mourners tried to storm the gate of the French hospital to enter the hospital despite the occupation's procedures."

Al Mayadeen's correspondent confirmed that the occupation soldiers attacked mourners at the funeral in occupied Al-Quds.

She explained that the mourners tried to bring the martyr's coffin back into the hospital to protect it from the attacks of the occupation soldiers, adding that "the mourners in front of the French hospital confronted the occupation forces, who used rubber bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse them."

Palestinian mourners pushed back against Israeli violence, as the military police attempted to snatch the Palestinian flag from the coffin while harassing protestors.

Israel Admits It Might Have Killed Journalist, Attacks Her Funeral
Israeli police assaulted mourners carrying the casket of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian American reporter, the same day Israel's army admitted it might have killed her.

ISRAELI POLICE ATTACKED the funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday, nearly causing mourners to drop the casket of the renowned Palestinian American journalist.

https://twitter.com/Zeinobia/status/1525067101999865858?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1525067101999865858%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheintercept.com%2F2022%2F05%2F13%2Fisraeli-police-attack-funeral-journalist-israels-army-admits-might-killed%2F

Abu Akleh was fatally shot while covering an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. Fellow journalists who witnessed the shooting said Israeli forces had fired on them. Israel's prime minister and other senior officials initially said Palestinian militants were "likely" to blame, but the Israeli army admitted on Friday that one of its soldiers might have fired the fatal shot.

The assault on the mourners, who were beaten with clubs at a hospital in East Jerusalem, stunned viewers who watched it unfold on live television, further enraging Palestinians and the dead journalist's colleagues and fans.

https://twitter.com/EmirNader/status/1525071210589077504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1525071210589077504%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheintercept.com%2F2022%2F05%2F13%2Fisraeli-police-attack-funeral-journalist-israels-army-admits-might-killed%2F
Israeli police said they attacked the procession because mourners waved Palestinian flags and chanted nationalist slogans. An official Israeli police account shared drone video to support the authorities' claim that two of the mourners had thrown rocks at them. But a comparison of that video to ground-level news footage showed that the police video had been edited to remove the initial police charge and slowed down to make it seem as if a man who just waved his arms in frustration had thrown something at the officers.

The televised assault on the funeral of a beloved figure only intensified the outrage over her death and the images were quickly remixed and shared across social networks.

Later on Friday, Israel's army said the results of an interim internal investigation suggested that its soldiers might have fired the shots that killed the Al Jazeera correspondent and wounded her colleague.

That admission marked a sharp retreat from the initial version of events offered by Israeli officials, who responded to anger over the killing of Abu Akleh on Wednesday by quickly distributing video of a Palestinian gunman firing down an alley during the raid. Officials also released statements calling it "likely" that the journalist was killed by a Palestinian militant, not an Israeli soldier.

Later the same day, however, a researcher for the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, Abdulkarim Sadi, recorded video showing that the Palestinian militant had been in a part of the camp that made it impossible for him to have shot Abu Akleh.

Israel's military then released body camera video of its soldiers retreating from that part of the camp and emerging on a street where armored vehicles were waiting to extract them. Geolocation by the B'Tselem researcher and others showed that the Israeli armored vehicles were parked on the street where Abu Akleh was shot.

The interim Israeli investigation acknowledged that the Israeli vehicles were parked about 200 meters away from Abu Akleh, and said that if she was shot by an Israeli soldier, it must have been because the soldier "fired several bullets from a special slit in the jeep and through a telescopic site at a terrorist ... and there's a possibility that the reporter stood near the terrorist."

That version of events was flatly contradicted by several other journalists who were with Abu Akleh at the time and insisted that they were nowhere near any of the Palestinian militants in the camp.

Hagai El-Ad, the executive director of B'Tselem, told me by phone on Friday that there is no reason to expect the Israeli army to release any more of the video it collected from soldiers after the incident. The Israel Defense Forces, El-Ad said, has a track record of only releasing video evidence "when it is beneficial to support the Army version of events."

The rights activist also called it "grotesque" that the United States had called for Palestinian authorities to conduct a joint investigation with Israel, given that Israel had repeatedly used slow-moving investigations to "whitewash" the killing of Palestinian civilians living under Israeli military rule.

The American pressure on Palestinian officials to allow Israel to take part in the investigation of itself shows the "U.S. complicity in what's going on here," El-Ad said, even when the victim is, like Abu Akleh, an American citizen.

Shireen Abu Akleh was 'shot dead in targeted attack' by Israel, CNN investigation concludes
CNN investigates the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11 and says she was targeted by Israeli sniper positioned 600 feet away from her with a clear line of sight.
https://mondoweiss.net/2022/05/shireen-abu-akleh-was-shot-dead-in-targeted-attack-by-israel-cnn-investigation-concludes/?utm_source=mailpoet&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-email-hgs-mailpoet

Today CNN published its own investigation of the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11, and it says that new eyewitnesses, videos and ballistic analysis bear out what Abu Akleh's colleagues said that day: The AlJazeera correspondent was targeted by an Israeli sniper positioned about 600 feet away from her with a clear line of sight.

CNN's team of six journalists writes:

Quote[A]n investigation by CNN offers new evidence — including two videos of the scene of the shooting — that there was no active combat, nor any Palestinian militants, near Abu Akleh in the moments leading up to her death. Videos obtained by CNN, corroborated by testimony from eight eyewitnesses, an audio forensic analyst and an explosive weapons expert, suggest that Abu Akleh was shot dead in a targeted attack by Israeli forces.

CNN's devastating report shows the media are not dropping the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, even if the Israeli government is. Hopefully this will bring added pressure on the U.S. government to investigate the case on its own, as 57 Congresspeople have urged it to do, and demand accountability for the killing.

The new investigation, which follows on similar forensic analyses by Bellingcat and B'Tselem, supports the assertions of journalist eyewitnesses, in the face of Israeli denials.

QuoteAll of the journalists were wearing protective blue vests that identified them as members of the news media.

"We stood in front of the Israeli military vehicles for about five to ten minutes before we made moves to ensure they saw us. And this is a habit of ours as journalists, we move as a group and we stand in front of them so they know we are journalists, and then we start moving," [reporter Shatha] Hanaysha told CNN...

CNN points out that an Israeli army spokesperson Ran Kochav described the journalists as "armed with cameras" later that day.

The CNN investigation reviewed a 16-minute video shot by Salim Awad, a 27-year-old Jenin camp resident.

QuoteHis video captures the moment that shots were fired at the four journalists — Abu Akleh, Hanaysha, another Palestinian journalist, Mujahid al-Saadi, and Al Jazeera producer Ali al-Samoudi, who was injured in the gunfire — as they walked toward the Israeli vehicles. In the footage, Abu Akleh can be seen turning away from the barrage. The footage shows a direct line of sight towards the Israeli convoy.

Awad witnessed the attack.

Quote"We saw around four or five military vehicles on that street with rifles sticking out of them and one of them shot Shireen. We were standing right there, we saw it. When we tried to approach her, they shot at us. I tried to cross the street to help, but I couldn't," Awad said.

Another witness reinforced this account:

QuoteJamal Huwail, a professor at the Arab American University in Jenin, who helped drag Abu Akleh's lifeless body from the road, said he believed the shots were coming from one of the Israeli vehicles, which he described as a "new model which had an opening for snipers," because of the elevation and direction of the bullets.

"They were shooting directly at the journalists," Huwail said.

The investigation analyzed videos and photos of the scene with the help of two military experts, to conclude that the shot that hit Abu Akleh was fired by a sniper aiming at a target in a manner that points to Israeli soldiers positioned about 600 feet away.

Quote"The number of strike marks on the tree where Shireen was standing proves this wasn't a random shot, she was targeted," [Chris] Cobb-Smith [a weapons expert and British army veteran] told CNN, adding that, in sharp contrast, the majority of gunfire from Palestinians captured on camera that day were "random sprays."...

At 200 meters, Cobb-Smith said that there was "no chance" that random firing would result in three or four shots hitting in such a tight configuration. "From the strike marks on the tree, it appears that the shots, one of which hit Shireen, came from down the street from the direction of the IDF troops."

A second expert consulted by CNN was Robert Maher, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Montana State University, who specializes in forensic audio analysis. Maher analyzed the intervals between the sounds of bullets leaving the barrel and the subsequent muzzle explosions recorded on video to assess the distance of the shooter from the camera.

Quote"That would correspond to a distance of something between 177 and 197 meters," or 580 and 646 feet, he said in an email to CNN, which corresponds almost exactly with the Israeli sniper's position.

The best thing about the CNN report is that it shows that international media are not going to forget about Shireen Abu Akleh's killing. We can only hope that more media and free speech organizations become advocates for Abu Akleh in death, as governments try to push the case aside.
