Bertelsmann , is a German private multinational conglomerate corporation based in -Westphalia, Germany. It is one of the world's largest media conglomerates and is also active in the service sector and education.

Bertelsmann was founded as a publishing house by Carl Bertelsmann in 1835. After World War II, Bertelsmann, under the leadership of Reinhard Mohn, went from being a medium-sized enterprise to a major conglomerate, offering not only books but also television, radio, music, magazines and services. Its principal divisions include the RTL Group, Penguin Random House, BMG, Arvato, the Bertelsmann Printing Group, the Bertelsmann Education Group and Bertelsmann Investments.

Since its founding in 1977, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has devoted considerable effort to facilitating German-Israeli relations. This long-term cooperation was built on the close friendship cultivated between Liz and Reinhard Mohn with then-Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek.

For decades, projects such as the German-Jewish Dialogue and the German-Israeli Young Leaders Exchange have demonstrated Reinhard and Liz Mohn's affinity for the State of Israel.

According to the study, the perception of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has an increasingly dominant impact on the way Germans view Israel as a whole. While a majority of both Israelis (74 percent) and Germans (61 percent) believes that Germany has a special responsibility as a result of its history, opinions diverge about how this responsibility should be reflected in German policy. 84 percent of Israelis hope that the German government will provide political support for Israel in the Middle East conflict, but one in two Germans opposes such support. Similarly, 82 percent of Israelis want Germany to supply weapons to Israel, but 68 percent of Germans reject this idea.

Initiated in 2000, the German-Israeli Young Leaders Exchange was launched after Reinhard Mohn observed in the 1990s that, despite countless points of contact, the perceptions both young Israelis and Germans had of each other were still shaped by skepticism and misconceptions. The inaugural German-Israeli Young Leaders Exchange event, which took place in Germany on November 3-11, 2000, had as its theme a "Digital Economy."More than 400 experts and leaders from both countries – hailing from fields as diverse as politics, media, business, civil society, education and culture – have participated in the 17 cycles of the exchange program that have been held since 2000.

Reinhard Mohn and his wife Liz received the 2003 Teddy Kollek Award from the Jerusalem Foundation . The prize has been awarded to personalities who work for the well-being of Jerusalem and its citizens . The Mohn couple accepted the award at a ceremony in the Knesset. The award is intended to recognize the funding of projects that the couple has supported. These include the Bertelsmann Foundation's German-Jewish Dialogue, the Kronberg Talks and the "Koteret" ("The Headline") school of journalism.

Together with the London-based publisher and life long zionist Lord Weidenfeld, the Bertelsmann Stiftung frequently invites well-known Jewish personalities from all over the world to engage in discussions with German decision-makers from politics, business, culture and the media. Each of the regular German-Jewish Dialog meetings provides a round table for 40 to 50 participants to engage in open and informal discussion of the topics which shape the multi- facetted relationship between Germans and Jews all over the world

Weidenfeld was also a lifelong Zionist and renowned as a master networker. He was on good terms with popes, prime ministers and presidents and put his connections to good use for his zionist capers

The Kronberg talks on January 18 and 19, 2002 were mainly about the breakdown of trust between Israelis and Palestinians. The participants concluded that the only way out of the violence was through international help. The EU and the USA in particular would be ideal. The Bertelsmann Foundation was a main organizer of the talks. As of 2023 more then 20 annual Kronberg talks have taken place with the Israeli -Arab and Israeli Iran

The journalism school "Koteret" was founded in 1990 by the Bertelsmann Foundation in Tel Aviv. Koteret School of Journalism and Communication is the leading journalism training institution in Israel. The school was founded through a joint initiative of Reinhard Mohn and Dov Yudkovsky, the former editor-in-chief ofYedioth Aharonot and current Chairman of the Board of Directors in Koteret. Bertelsmann Stiftung has been supporting the school since its founding in 1989, investing a total of approximately EUR 10 million in the initiative by the end of the financial year 2005
