An Israeli man is suspected of sexually abusing more than 500 victims. The crimes are suspected to have occurred on the Internet.

The matter came to light after the Finnish police began investigating suspected gross sexual abuse of a child in North Karelia from January 2021. The victim was a 15-year-old Finnish girl at the time of the act. The suspected crime took place between 2020 and 2021.

In practice, the act lasted throughout 2020 and until the beginning of 2021, when the police investigation began.

The police began to investigate the matter with the investigation request that came to them.

The suspicion is that the man took advantage of the Finnish girl sexually using different internet messaging platforms. The man and the girl were in contact with each other using different applications and a video connection.

The victim and the suspect were in different countries at the time of the crime.

More than 500 victims
The police tracked down the suspect through their own investigations and managed to trace the man to Israel. His identity was identified in cooperation with the Israeli police.

In connection with the arrest, the Israeli police searched the man's apartment. Material was seized from the apartment, based on which there is reason to suspect that the man has abused more than 500 victims via the internet. There are victims from several different countries.

A 15-year-old Finnish girl at the time of the crime is reportedly the only Finnish victim. The Israeli police are conducting their own criminal investigation into the man's other suspected crimes.

- According to our information, the suspect has no connections to Finland, says Crime Commissioner Petri Tirronen from the Eastern Finland Police.

According to Tirronen, the criminal case will be fully investigated in Finland, and after a possible court hearing, the Israeli police can make their own decisions. In other words, the authority of Israel or another state can then make its own decisions and demands about whether it wants the suspect in its own country to answer for the crimes.

A difficult process
A 27-year-old man living in Israel is suspected of the crime. The man was arrested in absentia at the district court of North Karelia on June 22, 2021.

The Israeli police arrested the suspect on January 16, 2023 for extradition to Finland. At the same time, it became clear that the man may have a considerable number of victims.

The man was handed over to Finland on August 17. The man was imprisoned by the decision of the District Court of North Karelia on August 18. The Eastern Finland Police Department continues the preliminary investigation of the case together with the Eastern Finland Unit of the Central Criminal Police.

The criminal process has lasted a long time and has been very challenging. First, you had to identify the suspect with certainty and then get official help from the police of another country.

- This has required really good cooperation. If the suspect had not been handed over to Finland, there wouldn't be much that could be done, says Tirronen.

The deadline for indictment for the suspected crime is January 26, 2024.
