Your proposing to remove something that you do not know what it does?  It appears to be a tool for instant messaging and board notifications.  And some specifics on what you mean by Skype addresses and the overall idea would help to understand what you are talking about.

An Open Source alternative to the closed-source (and Israeli developed) ICQ instant-messaging system.
"The real menace of our Republic is the invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy legs over our cities, states and nation. At the head is a small group of banking houses generally referred to as \'international bankers.\' This little coterie... run our government for their own selfish ends. It operates under cover of a self-created screen, seizes our executive officers, legislative bodies, schools, courts, newspapers and every agency created for the public protection."

Skype is a Voice Over Internet telephone system. It is a good idea to add it so that those who want can put their Skype usernames into their profiles, but it may be possible to do it without losing the Jabber address.

Or get rid of ICQ, who uses it anyway? I've never heard of Jabber either.

Jabber is an installed feature in phpBB3, but it is currently inactive.  So for the Skype addresses, that would be to put an extra field in the profile for people to add their Skype username?  Let me know if this is what the original suggestion was about... or if the idea was about something else... I am new to skype stuff :)

Ognir

Fine keep Jabber,  can we activate it and test it?

sullivan was spot on,  add the skype to user profiles

The Skype field was added yesterday, in case t hat is what was meant.  So you can go to your profile and add your username there ;)

I'll look into activating the Jabber system.

Peace.

I am afraid of Skype. Skype is a heavily encrypted, obfuscated, and anti-debugging resistant chat client. It's the ultimate black box. Skype copies all of the chat messages that you write and stores them on their servers.

Another problem with Skype is that even though it is supposedly encrypted (and it is) they share all of the encryption keys with the law enforcement agencies of the world. It's a well known fact that Skype has complied with the FBI orders to allow wiretapping (all US carriers must agree to allow wiretapping). I think (nothing proven though) that they have also shared the keys with N-S-A and I think they are sucking down all of the data. This happened after Skype was bought by eBay and after that huge SKype outage... which was initiated by the actions of eBay/Skype. They basically turned on the feature that allows any client to relay messages to a master supernode (which they control) and were overwhelmed with the traffic. Skype blamed it on MS update... which was nonsense and proven to be wrong.

This came out recently: Germany is siphoning Skype traffic too and they have master keys:

In short, install an open source client, connect to a known, open source Jabber server and forget about Skype.
1) No link? Select some text from the story, right click and search for it.
2) Link to TiU threads. Bring traffic here.

Especially when it was bought out by eBay. That's when they got weird. I know someone who was working in their London office. Months before the eBay buyout, creeps were showing up and installing stuff.

That's it in a fuckin' nutshell. I'm proud of every word that comes out of my mouth, and I'll use a goddamn megaphone if it's within reach, any fuckin' time.

You all realize that 25 years from now people could be talking about "those prescient podcasts" in the "early Ognirant Phase" or something like that.

<cough>

We all change. Stop being afraid of it. Even Hair Bands can be renewed...

BTW, I heard a rumor that the Ognir sported a 5th Dan Mohawk back in the early 1980s...

" I came here tonight...and I didn't know what to expect. I've seen a lot of people hating me...                and I didn't know...what to feel about that, so...I guess I didn't  like you much either.                During this fight...I seen a lot of changing:the way you felt about me...and the way I felt about you.
In here...there were two guys...killing each other. But I guess that's better  than a  million.                What I'm trying to say is...if I can change...and you can change... everybody can change!"

I might try it.
Says its a 'closed' service. We live in a world without privacy now. I am annoyed but accept this paradoxicallly.

Then look at open-source alternatives, such as Gizmo5. At least with open-source you can be guaranteed that backdoors for snoops won't be sneaked in unnoticed.

From What Is Jabber
QuoteIn other words, Jabber is NOT a closed, insecure, unfriendly, centralized, proprietary instant messaging service like AIM, ICQ, MSN, or Yahoo.

I hope I don't come off looking like an open-source evangelist, but here's another open-source VOIP (Internet Telephony) and Instant Messaging client - SIP Communicator
