UK - David Cameron about his Jewish ancestors

David Cameron this week insisted a Conservative government would do "much more to protect and empower the Jewish community" and described learning about his Jewish ancestors as one of the highlights of his year.

The Conservative leader's comments came in a message to members of the Movement for Reform Judaism, which he used to make pledges on tackling anti-Semitism and education and to appeal for the support of community members in the upcoming election.

Cameron said: "To me, one of the biggest contributions of Judaism is its understanding of what makes a responsible society. Last summer, I gave a speech to Jewish Care where I talked about this idea. I quoted a phrase of Rabbi Hillels which I think captures it beautifully: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I?" That urgent, selfless moral compulsion to change the world for the better is right at the heart of the Jewish way of life. If I become Prime Minister, I want to see that idea of responsibility extend right across our society.

"A key part of that will be about building a stronger, more cohesive society - and that means doing much more to tackle the rise in anti-Semitism. I was appalled when the Community Security Trust told me that there were more anti-Semitic incidents in the first half of 2009 than in the whole of any previous year. We need big changes to root out this extremism - stopping preachers of hate from entering this country, banning those extremist groups who are already here, and doing much more to tackle radicalisation in our universities."

The man hoping to succeed Gordon Brown as prime minister also touched on a prominent theme of the party's platform. "I want to build a bigger society," he said: "And we can't do that without backing faith-based organisations in the good work that they do. Take faith schools, for example. They are a really important part of our education system and often have a culture and ethos which helps to drive up standards. Through our school reform plans, there will be a real growth in new good school places, and I'm sure some of these will be in faith schools."

Cameron also spoke of learning about his ancestors, the Levitas, as a personal highlight. He said: "I am a great admirer of the Jewish people and your extraordinary achievements. I've long seen your community as a shining light in our society." Messages from Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg will be published in the Movement's newsletter in the coming fortnight.

I wish I could contribute something more than barfing noises after reading that.

Light upon nations, my bloomin' arse. Unless it's a flame thrower we're talking about.

Or maybe the first letter rubbed off: Blight upon nations.
Take heed to yourself lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither you go, lest it become a snare in the midst of you.

David Cameron 'could be a direct descendant of Moses'
Russell Jenkins
RECOMMEND? (6)
David Cameron could be a direct descendant of Moses, a Jewish scholar has suggested.

Political commentators have long known that the Conservative Party leader's paternal great-great-grandfather was a Jewish immigrant who became a successful businessman.

But Yaakov Wise, a research fellow at the University of Manchester Centre for Jewish Studies, has traced the politician's ancestry back to Elijah Levita, an eminent 16th-century Jewish scholar. Dr Wise's study of archival material also suggests that Mr Cameron, who has described himself as an "enthusiastic friend of the Jewish people", could be a direct descendant of Moses.

Mr Cameron's great-great-grandfather, Emile Levita, arrived in Britain from Germany in the 1850s and rose swiftly in the world of commerce, gaining citizenship in 1871 and becoming director of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, based in London.

Cameron's royal link makes him a true blue
Levita married out of the faith and adopted the trappings of an English gentleman, owning a grouse moor in Wales and sending his four sons to Eton. His son Arthur, a stockbroker, married Steffie Cooper, a relative of King George III, and Mr Cameron's relationship to the monarchy survives to this day — he is a fifth cousin of the Queen, once removed.

Dr Wise has traced the family's ancestral line back to Elijah Levita, 1469-1549, a central figure in the "Christian Hebraist" movement, who pioneered Hebrew and Yiddish linguistic research at the time of the Tudors.

The name Levita is the Latin form of Levite, meaning a Jew descended from the tribe of Levi, the son of Jacob, and one of the original 12 tribes of Israel. Dr Wise acknowledges, however, that Mr Cameron's connection to Moses, who led his people out of slavery in Egypt, is less certain, describing his thesis as historical whimsy.

He said: "It is possible that Cameron is a direct descendant of Moses or, at least, a cousin. The leader of the Levites at the time of the exodus from Egypt was Moses, who was married with two sons named in the Bible.

"However, later descendants are unknown and many of today's Levites, often carrying the surnames Levy, Levitan or Levita, could in fact be his descendants."

Dr Wise said that Jewish records were notoriously difficult to follow because it was likely that they had been destroyed during the Jewish people's flight from persecution. A recognisable trail to antiquity is impossible.

Oxford chums: Tory Fundraiser (ZION) Andrew Feldman, second left at the back, with  David  Cameron, top right, and the Brazenose College tennis team in the 1980s

The full Tory statement issued on behalf of George Osborne - 21st October 2008

This is the statement issued this evening on behalf of George Osborne and Andrew Feldman:

Andrew Feldman - The money link

George Osborne has met Oleg Deripaska on five occasions, four of which happened over a weekend in Corfu in August.

George Osborne, the shadow chancellor

On Saturday January 26 2008 at the Davos World Economic Forum, Mr Osborne was introduced to Mr Deripaska in the company of others including Peter Mandelson. They had a brief group conversation about the world economy.
On Friday August 22 while on a family holiday in Corfu, Mr Osborne and his wife were invited on to Mr Deripaska's yacht by Mr Rothschild.

Others present again included Peter Mandelson.

Lord Mandelson with his host Jacob Rothschild in Corfu

The conversation involved Russian and British politics. There was no conversation of any kind about political donations.
That evening Mr Osborne attended a party at the Rothschild villa and sat on the same table as Mr Rothschild, Mr Deripaska and Mr Mandelson. Again, there was no conversation about party funding.
The following evening - August 23 - Mr Osborne attended a dinner at a local taverna. Mr Deripaska did not attend but both Mr Rothschild and Peter Mandelson did. The conversation involved the state of British politics.
The next day - August 24 - Mr Osborne, who had been staying in a rented house but was now staying at the Rothschild villa with his family, mentioned to Mr Rothschild that Andrew Feldman - who Mr Rothschild had met once before - was holidaying half an hour away with his family and friends.
Mr Rothschild then invited Mr Feldman to join them for an early evening drink at the villa.

Rothschild corfu estate

This was a social invitation and at no point previously had Mr Osborne and Mr Rothschild discussed the possibility of a donation to the Conservative Party from Mr Deripaska.
Mr Feldman, Mr Osborne, Mr Rothschild and two other house guests gathered on the villa terrace.
There was a discussion about British and American politics in the course of which Mr Rothschild suggested to Mr Feldman that his friend, Mr Deripaska, could be interested in making a party donation. Mr Feldman had not met Mr Deripaska previously and was not aware who he was.
Mr Feldman made clear that there are very strict rules on donations to political parties in the UK.
He explained that there are only two ways of giving a political donation. Firstly, if you appear as an individual on the UK electoral roll.

Secondly, if the donation comes from a legitimate UK trading company.
This is an explanation Mr Feldman gives regularly when asked about donations both privately and publicly.

At this point Mr Rothschild said that Mr Deripaska owned UK trading companies including Leyland Daf.

There was no discussion about how a donation by Mr Deripaska could be concealed or channelled.
At no point did Mr Osborne or Mr Feldman solicit or ask for a donation, suggest ways of channelling a donation or express any wish to meet with Mr Deripaska to discuss donations.
The conversation moved on to the US elections. Some time later Mr Rothschild - having phoned Mr Deripaska - invited Mr Osborne, Mr Feldman and one other house guest for a further drink on Mr Deripaska's yacht which was moored nearby.

Oleg Deripaska's yacht moored outside the Rothschild estate in Corfu, Greece. According to reports Mandelson stayed on the yacht belonging to the Russian billionaire last summer after the Rothschilds ran out of room for him. Mandelson was also alleged to have discussed Gordon Brown at a taverna on the island with George Osborne, the shadow chancellor.

Mr Osborne and Mr Feldman agreed to meet with Mr Deripaska and his wife and family.
They stayed on the boat for about an hour and drank tea. There was a discussion about British and Russian politics, education and Russian history.

There was no conversation or mention of party funding or the possibility of Mr Deripaska making a donation to the Conservative Party.
After the group left the boat, Mr Feldman did not see Mr Deripaska or Mr Rothschild again and had no further conversations with Mr Deripaska.
Mr Osborne met Mr Deripaska again briefly the following lunchtime when both Mr Deripaska and Mr Mandelson visited the Rothschild villa.

The conversation between them lasted no more than five minutes and again there was no discussion about political donations.
Indeed Mr Osborne has had no further discussions with Mr Deripaska. Nor has he had a further conversation with Mr Rothschild about donations.
On September 18 Mr Feldman and Mr Rothschild had a phone conversation about the possibility of Mr Rothschild hosting a fundraising dinner for the Conservative Party - something the Rothschild family have done before.
At the end of that conversation Mr Rothschild mentioned that Leyland Daf, a UK trading company owned by Mr Deripaska, was interested in making a donation to the party. Leyland Daf is well-known to be a company recently purchased and owned by Mr Deripaska.
Mr Feldman said that he was not sure if such a donation was appropriate. He told Mr Rothschild that he would have to seek advice on the matter.
Later that day it was decided after consultation with senior party officials that it would not be appropriate to accept such a donation.

There was no futher contact from Mr Rothschild or Mr Deripaska and the matter was considered to be at an end.
For clarity - neither Mr Feldman or Mr Osborne have ever discussed with Oleg Deripaska the possibility of him making a political donation.
At no point in any of these meetings and discussions did either Mr Osborne or Mr Feldman solicit or attempt to solicit a donation from Mr Deripaska.

Nor did they at any stage suggest any way that a donation could be channelled or concealed through a British company.
This statement constitutes a full and detailed explanation of Mr Osborne and Mr Feldman's dealings with Mr Deripaska. We would now urge Lord Mandelson to provide the same.

The Mail On Sunday has an extraordinary revelation that the photo above has been photoshopped! Who has been removed???

Two faces are mysteriously missing from this picture of the Bullingdon Club

Who doctored the toffs?

I bring you the Mystery of the Missing Toff. Who is doctoring pictures of the Bullingdon Club? And why?

By a mysterious process, almost all photographs of this unlovely society for rich, young drunkards have now been suppressed, which suits David Cameron very well, since he is in so many of them, looking so very rich and arrogant. I have seen them.

But last week a new study of the lads appeared, featuring George Osborne and his (now former) friend Nat Rothschild. To the left of the middle, there's a mysterious gap where somebody ought to be standing but isn't. Odder still, there's a patch of shirt-front and waistcoat there, with no person attached.

Odder yet, Mr Rothschild's right trouser leg has a white lapel, not usual even under the bizarre dress code of the Bullingdon.

On close examination, the three seated figures at the front appear to have been stuck in place after being moved from somewhere else.
