Israeli forces on the southeastern fence, surrounding the beleaguered Gaza Strip, have opened fire on Palestinian farmers according to eyewitnesses.

The farmers, who were working on their land in Faraheen area in east Khan Younis city, came under machinegun fire from Israeli army posts on Saturday, DPA reported.

According to security sources, another machinegun shooting spree was reported on the border along the north-eastern Gaza Strip, east of the town of Jabaliya. There were no reports of casualties in the two shooting incidents.

Meanwhile, three Israeli bulldozers, backed by two tanks entered Beit Lahiya, an agricultural community in the northern Gaza Strip.

Residents said the bulldozers leveled some groves and withdrew later in the morning.

Tel Aviv has so far resisted international calls for lifting the almost two-year-long blockade which was imposed after Hamas -- the democratically-elected government of Gaza -- took control of the sliver.

Israel launched an all out war on Gaza on December 27. Three weeks of ensuing airstrikes and a ground incursion inflicted about USD 2 billion in damage on the Gazan economy.

The carnage left some 1,400 Palestinians dead and nearly 5,450 others injured. The casualties were mostly civilian.
