Some interesting masonic number stuff

http://www.masoncode.com/Slipshod%20and ... winked.htm

QuoteThe Entered Apprentice candidate is presented to the lodge, 'Slipshod and Hoodwinked', draped with a, 'Cable Tow', - in other words he is slippered, hooded and has a hangman's noose around his neck.

'Hoodwinked' has the significant value of 1080. This is the female, or lunar, component of the number of fusion (1080 + 666 = 1746) and ascribed to the Holy Ghost - in Greek 'To Pneuma Agion'.

The words 'Cable Tow' have the same value - 1081 (this is equal to 1080 by the cabalistic rule of colel). It seems to indicate that the candidate is bound to serve the feminine principle that is held dear in Hermetic philosophy. There are many other reasons for chosing this number: one which may be significant to the context is that 1080 inches is said to be the perimeter measurement of the Temple porch - obviously the Apprentice is only yet at the Temple gates.

'Slipshod' has a value of 331. This is the same as, 'Atum', who was a son of Ptah and a sacrifice - it signifies that the Apprentice, with the noose around his neck, is a symbolic sacrifice and that part of him must die before a new man can be reborn. 331 is also the value of IanoV - 'Janus', who was the double faced god that gave us the name of the first month of the year, January. Janus marks the gateway and looks both back to the old year and forward to the new year. Janus is thus another symbol of death and rebirth.

The expression, 'Slipshod and Hoodwinked', has a value of 1456. This again refers us back to double-headed Janus, because it supplies us with the value of the two months, 'December & January' (134 + 1322 = 1456) (1).

The validity of these numerical references to Janus in the symbolism of Entered Apprentice degree has recently been confirmed for me when I discovered a Masonic essay on the two-faced god by Trevor Stewart. In the conclusion to the article he writes:

        Remember also that according to Cicero at least, the name Janus has the same root as the verb 'to initiate', and what is it that Freemasons' Lodges do except they initiate? In other words, they are concerned with 'beginnings'. (2)

This discovery illustrates just how effective gematria cryptanalysis can be.

Albert Pike gives a Hebrew derivation of the Cable Tow: ChBL ThV - and translates it as 'His pledge' (bond). It is interesting that this gives it a gematria equivalence (through 446) to a word meaning a noose - MVQSh. One cannot hide from the fact that it is also a symbol of death - MVT - although it is clearly a symbolic, rather than a bodily, death that is prefigured: the profane candidate dies and the new Mason is born.

QuoteThe cabalistic rule of 'colel' states that one digit can be added to, or subtracted from, the gematria value of a word without affecting its value. This seems to modern ears to be a cheat, however the cabalists explained the rule by pointing out that for them 'One' was not a number - the Monad symbolises the Divinity and could come and go as 'He' pleased, adding nothing and taking nothing away.

Shakespeare refers to this concept in his Sonnets, when he writes, "Among a number one is reckon'd none." (1)

The word 'colel' seems to derive from the Hebrew verb, 'KLL' - to make perfect or whole.

.The rule of colel was described by Moses Cordovero in Pardes Rimmonim written in 1549 (later published in Cracow in 1592). A more modern reference to the rule is found in John Michell's City of Revelation (Garnstone Press, London, 1972, p. 7).

Not that this is important, but I found it interesting.

Gematria

QuoteAlright, you probably already know this but I wouldn't feel right without stating my firm warnings:
1. Gematria is a detour from serious work, its important but only in so much as being able to have a well rounded practice.
2. Gematria may look something like math but it is not mathematics, its not even an amateur science. It's an art, with every gematrial problem different answers exist for different people.
3. Gematria historically comes from Greek and Hebrew, there was no ancient Latin form of gematria, so all English gematria contains further derivations from the root source.

That said here goes...

All letters have a numeric equivalent and all numbers have an alphabetic equivalent. There are four basic ways to derive the numeric value of a letter, the first is called "absolute" value and works from the following adaptation to English.

A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=20, L=30, M=40, N=50, O=60, P=70, Q=80, R=90, S=100, T=200, U=300, V=400, W=500, X=600, Y=700, Z=800

So that a word such as "Earth" can be seen as the five numbers 5,1,90,200,8 in sequence.

Now you can take your five numbers and add them together, multiply them, subtract them or any such to get another derivative number. Typically they are added together to get 304=Earth.

There is also "ordinal" value with each letter in the alphabet getting a value equivalent to its order in the alphabet.

A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11, L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z=26

So that Earth can be seen as 5, 1, 18, 20, 8, added together to get a total of 52=Earth.

Then there is "reduced" value where everything is mod 9, and values are repetitive.

A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8

Which leads you to weird conclusions like A=J=S, but I digress...

So that Earth can be seen as 5, 1, 9, 2, 8 for a total of 25=Earth.

Then there is something called "integral reduced" value, which applies mod 9 to whole word values until you get a single digit for a word.

In which case the "mystical revelation" that 25=Earth becomes 7=Earth, and 52=Earth become 7=Earth, and 304=Earth becomes 7=Earth. I mean, "wow"....

At this point, before we go any deeper, I would like to point out that if you have decent grasp of number theory and cryptology/cryptanalysis this all slightly amusing.

Now once you start determining number values for words, you can start to see equivalencies and relationships in some words like you see between letters in the reduced value system. There is no rule for what makes an numerical equivalency valid or not, so if you come up with a word in one value system that equates to a word value derived in another system you have a valid connection. And the more you use the modulous operator of 9, the more likely you are to draw conclusions of equivalency like

PENIS=VAGINA in integral reduced form.

Furthermore you can take sacred numbers and find interesting word equivalents and relationships especially if you jump back and forth between Hebrew, Greek, Latin and English.

What you do with letters and words can also be applied on phrases, sentences, paragraphs, chapters and so forth. Coming up with more numbers and more relationships. You can also run the system in reverse using various numbers to derive words, phrases and sentences and if your really daring you could derive an entire book from the number 666 run reverse through mod 9 with "a little" guess work and tinkering.

Uncle Al was notoriously obsessed with gematria and he used every little technique and convention to come to some of his conclusions. He also liked to cipher little secrets into his written work using gematria as sort of an open key.

In my opinion, gematria is not a valid path in and of itself. But it does have some use in leading people to think about certain words and phrases in ways different than they normally would, and in that sense it has a respectable value.

QuoteAt any stage along the way the traveller can simply define his state in the words Eimi o eimi - I am what I am (1 Cor. 15,10): the implication being that he is what he has made himself to be. Those words have the same value as Ashlar - 200.

QuoteIn another link to the story of Noah, we can observe the presence of the critical solar number 666. The Hebrew names of Noah and his son Ham are NCh and ChM and have values of 58 + 608 = 666. The value of Noah's three sons is exactly three times 666: ChM, ShM and IPhTh make 608 + 900 + 490 = 1998 = 3 x 666. One way of representing this relationship is by drawing two circles that intersect to form a vesica piscis - if the circles have combined circumferences of 1998 the vesica will have a circumference of 666. This ties in with the gematria value of The Juwes because a square drawn around the conjoined circles has a perimeter of exactly 1908. It is also noteworthy that the diameter of the circles is 318, hence HlioV - the Sun, and also the number of servants symbolically circumcised by Abraham
