The shooter has been tentatively identified as James von Brunn - allegedly affiliated with white supremacist Web sites, law enforcement officials told CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

Authorities told the Associated Press von Brunn's van was located around the museum and was tested for explosives.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said the suspect walked into the museum with what he described as "long gun" and exchanged fire with security guards. The extent of the injuries weren't immediately known.

U.S. Park Police initially gave slightly different information, saying three people had been shot. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN a third person was hurt after being cut by broken glass.

According to a Website featuring von Brunn's writings, the suspect is described as a World War II veteran and Mensa member who spent over six years in prison after he "attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest."

According to an archived Washington Post story, von Brunn was found guilty in 1983 of attempting to kidnap Federal Reserve officials.

One of his writings advertised on the site was described as a "new hard-hitting expose of the JEW CONSPIRACY to destroy the White gene pool."

An address listing shows a James von Brunn residing in an apartment in Annapolis, Maryland.

President Barack Obama was saddened by the shooting, which took place near the White House and is concerned about a guard who appears to have been injured, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.

Gibbs said the White House is receiving regular updates from the FBI, Homeland Security Council and the Situation Room.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside the museum. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.

Roads surrounding the museum have been closed.

Sandy Perkins of Massachusetts said her daughter, Abigail, called her shortly after the shooting. The teen was on a school trip to the museum and told her mother students heard several shots before they were told to leave the building.

Abigail said some of her friends were very shaken, but all were otherwise fine, Sandy Perkins said.

The teens did not see where the shots were coming from.

In a statement, Israeli Embassy officials said they were "shocked and saddened by today's shooting incident at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. The Embassy of Israel condemns this attack and is closely following the situation."

damn his website is down. Thanks for the cache link joeblowman. I don't think I backed that particular site up.

I read it about six months ago, around the last quarter of 2008. It was not a large website, to the point, and I wonder if anyone has a complete copy of his book?

He was dead-on, and had gone into the Federal Reserve building to arrest that group before.

Reminds me of a man, another WW2 veteran, in Germany, who set himself on fire in a big public place, and left a note.

Different ways of dealing with the same frustration.

This kind of thing just irritates the piss out of me. This is the kind of news that the zio media froths over because it helps 'their' cause immensely. So 'bubba' goes to the Holocaust museum and kills a few 'kikes' for the 'white cause'.

It's shit like this that hurts our cause and practically lumps us in with the 'nazi crowd'.

We must persevere, NEVER LET UP-it's the reason they are winning. They never shut up about their suffering and we need to let all know about their crimes and NEVER FORGET. There are more of us than them and we need to overwhelm their constant nagging, lies, deceipt and squash the canards they have invented and talk about other holocausts and sufferings outside of their own narcissistic bullshit.

bang on guys!  this one psycho makes headlines and it just adds fuel to their holocaust fire meanwhile 80 million Europeans died in WW2 for their cause and we struggle to get people to wake up and smell these rats and their lies.

Sadly, R.C. even if you are a "Clean"  on this... they will still lump you - even, for far lesser "transgressions". Pretty soon, in the US and Canada if you merely say the word "jew" and you are not Jewish you will be "criminalized".   Looks like the guy was pissed off at the changes through out his life and wanted to go out with a "bang".

You're quite right CSR and sad it is. I will never resort to this guys tactics though. As I said, anger is a good thing if harnessed properly. In other words it is what gives us that extra drive when we need it in this battle. I refuse to allow my anger to become hate though-I have too often seen the ugly side of hate.

But back on the point  you made, yes I know I will never come out of this 'clean'. ;) But this is where people like us come in. My point: even now people I talk too are often shocked by the things I say but most of the time they get what I'm saying, but it comes through education and understanding. Educating them about a topic like Palestine and the illegal occupation or who controls banking/media etc., So it's our job to break down the barriers and canards, primarily that any criticism towards anything jewish as bad. But I digress, I will never stop fighting the good fight :)
