Ryanair to make passengers stand

Ryanair is considering proposals to make some of its customers stand during flights.

The low-cost airline would charge passengers less on "bar stools" with seat belts around their waists.

Michael O'Leary, the chief executive, has already held talks with US plane manufacturer Boeing about designing an aircraft with standing room.

He is now seeking approval from the Irish Aviation Authority before ordering a new fleet of carriers, according to The Sun.

A Ryanair spokesman told the newspaper: "If they approve it, we'll be doing it."

Mr O'Leary is reported to have got the idea from the Chinese airline Spring, which has put forward similar plans. It estimates space could be made for up to 50 per cent more passengers and costs could be cut by 20 per cent.

It is not the first time Ryanair has come up with a controversial proposal for cutting costs. Earlier this year Mr O'Leary suggested passengers could be charged £1 to use the on-board lavatories.

In an interview on BBC television he said that the low-cost airline was looking at the possibility of installing a coin slot on the lavatory door so that "people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny."

Mr O'Leary also considered introducing a "fat tax" for overweight passengers.

I never heard of anything so stupid, standing room in an aeroplane with 50% more sardines than they already pack in. No Thanks.

I wouldn't like to have the job collecting body parts if one of these standing room planes crashes.

Ryanair innovations are like a black comedy. Paying for toilet, carry your own bags onto the plane. what will they think of next ??

I'd rather take the slow boat or pay more. However i could be convinced to fly Ryanair, provided they make some additional changes to their flight policy.

If they will give passengers the option of renting a safety parachute in advance of take off incase there is an accident i'd be interested in flying with them again.
They should also have an mid-air emergency airlock exit that passengers can open with their credit cards. Safety parachutes are not required to access the emergency airlock only credit cards.

That way they might to make a few extra ££££ $$$$ on suicidal sheople or old sheople who want to euthanize themselves.

I'm all for progress

Which is why I will pay 3x or 4x more to travel on any other airline and will even go out of my way to avoid them. Come to think of it, their airports are always in the next country from their destination city, so I don't have to do that very often :)

Anyway, I doubt the proposal is serious. It's just a publicity stunt. O'Leary just loves publicity and seems to believe in the adage "All publicity is good publicity".
"The real menace of our Republic is the invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy legs over our cities, states and nation. At the head is a small group of banking houses generally referred to as \'international bankers.\' This little coterie... run our government for their own selfish ends. It operates under cover of a self-created screen, seizes our executive officers, legislative bodies, schools, courts, newspapers and every agency created for the public protection."
