Anyone else consider acquiring proficiency with bows and arrows as a good way to hunt and possibly use in self-defence if everything really breaks down? Most countries don't slap restrictions on bows and arrows, although high-power crossbows are often regulated.

Even carbon fiber arrows are super cheap these days, and a decent bow doesn't cost much, either.

One need not be a prophet to be aware of impending dangers. An accidental combination of experience and interest will often reveal events to one man under aspects which few see.

Whoa that's awesome Slingshot bow!

Like thirdeyewise, I too have some guns.  You might need to really consider whether you are looking for Defensive weapons or Hunting weapons.  And maybe split your weapon choices between them.

A bow is very good for Hunting and is reusable in most cases.  If you live in an area with little to no crime and people look out for one another, I would go with a Bow or slingshot for general Defense.  However, if you live around possible stupids, nothing is better for than the all around 12 gauge pump shotgun.  It will defend your home in close range without killing a neighbor or family unlike a high caliber round, it also tends to quickly scare off the stupids especially the sound of it clicking when you pump it -- the stupids somehow magically know the sound and are really afraid of "Buck Shot" without having ever hunted. A lot of robbers fear the "spray" more than anything else since no matter how fast they are, they are likely going to get hit with a few pellets even if they try and draw on you.  I've had to pull the 12 guage at my front door and nearly pulled it on some people trying to break in a few years ago.  Sleep with it locked under the bed with buck 10 chambered.  It can go through most simple wood doors and light walls if people are shooting from the other side.

A handgun is good for cases when you are sleeping and people are in your home, or you are prone, and seconds count.

If you really are going to face the horde of dumb zombies -- nothing beats a good Saiga 12 auto-pump... it is the fear of God.  Might also down a Jew Drone someday...

After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. In 1914, these same banks bought the controlling number of shares in the newly organized Federal Reserve Bank of New York, paying for the stock with the Czar\'s sequestered funds. In November 1917,  Red Guards drove a truck to the Imperial Bank and removed the Romanoff gold and jewels. The gold was later shipped directly to Kuhn, Loeb Co. in New York.-- Curse of Canaan

A lot of folks use a slingshot to drop feeder pellets in the wild.
