Foreign Minister Micheál Martin has been denied access to war-ravaged Gaza by the Israeli Government, it emerged tonight.

Mr Martin had intended to visit the troubled territory later this month to assess the humanitarian situation, but his request was turned down by officials who he claims gave no adequate reason for their rejection.

Speaking at a meeting of the Oireachtas European Affairs Committee Mr Martin said he was anxious to visit the disputed land.

"I would like to see real progress in opening up Gaza and ending the unjustified blockade of its population," he added.

"The continuation of the blockade is only providing succour to the extremists and raising, rather than reducing the risk, of further conflict in the region."

The minister told the committee he hoped a European Council gathering in Brussels next Monday would help peace negotiations get back on track.

"If progress is not quickly realised and the situation remains at an impasse, then the international community as a whole may need to re-consider what further pressure it can bring in favour of achieving a negotiated, two-State settlement," he said.

The turning down of Minister Martin's request follows the refusal of similar applications by British, French and Turkish authorities.

Bernard Durkan, chairman of the Oireachtas committee described the Israeli government's decision as an intolerable affront.

"That an Irish foreign minister is not permitted to visit a region to assess a humanitarian situation is almost without precedent and is tantamount to censorship," he said.

"The continuing blockade of Gaza by Israel is utterly unjustified and is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.

"Denying access to our Minister for Foreign Affairs only serves to give the impression that Israel is unwilling to let the outside world see the suffering which is going on."

Call me cynical, but isn't this idiots job now obsolete since 1st December. We have an EU Foreign Minister (unelected), I am positive she will be allowed entry to Gaza  :?:

The Paddy politicians just didn't try to get in hard enough. They knew politicians from other countries had also been denied entry this year but still they applied. They should have taken the boat like any real politicians of measure do, these days.

They are just going through the motions, making loud noises so they can off load responsibility and pass it along to a process of never ending circles. Our Irish leaders are cowards who will not put themselves out for anyone and especially not for the Palestinians.

"minister told the committee he hoped a European Council (unelected) gathering in Brussels next Monday would help peace negotiations get back on track"

"Hoped" and "would help" from the EU Council   who is the idiot here.

Taking the boat is not an option for these goons as its not worth spending a few days in an israeli prison and they would be in big trouble with their paymasters on return to Ireland.
Maybe they are afraid they might breath in some Depleted Uranium dust , thereby ruining their elder years and spoiling all the fun plans they had for blowing that fat state pension which they are owed.  Money over fame, honour and standing by the helpless. Let see what harvest Ireland reaps from the EU, only what we deserve.

Could the Paddy politicans have been watching the idiot box too much recently ? A few hollywood terror flicks on the plane over must be standard by now for middle eastern flights into Israel. This might have spooked our timid irish leaders. Thus they were afraid there might be have been a nasty towel headed sucide bomber waiting just inside the prison gates "to blow up the Paddies. " Embarrasing Israel and Oh !! dont say it please, what a loss for ireland ?  A national tragedy, no doubt and a real bonaza for israeli propganda   .

Hurry back minister, stay safe from those evil muslims, hell bent on taking your life so they can get to heaven. Ireland cannot take another loss. You are simply irreplaceable  :geek:

Cynthia managed to get in and out (of the prisons anyway ) without be ripped to pieces or blown to bits. Send her off for "mission impossible: Rebuilding Afghanistan" if she gets back into congress shes has the CV for it.
