Neighbors say parents not to blame for daughter's alleged espionage. 'This is an attempt to reignite the affair after media forgot about it,' one of them says

Hate slogans, including "There is a price for treason" and "The Kams are traitors" were spray-painted on the Jerusalem home of the parents of Anat Kam, who is suspected of stealing some 2,000 confidential IDF documents during her military service and then transferring them to a Haaretz reporter Uri Blau.

The parents, who live in the Ramot neighborhood, have filed a police complaint. Their neighbors were infuriated, saying the parents were not to blame for their daughter's alleged offenses.

"This (spray-painting) is an attempt to reignite the whole affair after the media had already forgotten about it since the Holyland corruption scandal broke out," one neighbor told Ynet.

The espionage affair caused mass outrage in Israel. One man went as far as creating Facebook group in which members were urged to harm Kam. Hundreds of fans joined, but some of them warned that the people behind the initiative went too far and broke the law.

However, Kam's parents told Ynet recently that their daughter is encouraged by the great amount of support she is receiving and believes that her actions were justified.

"It's clear that the Shin Bet built a crazy espionage story. I cannot imagine why handing documents to a journalist is considered spying. It's just not true," says Anat's mother, Ada Gersht.

Yigal Kam, Anat's father, added that the image of his daughter illustrated in the details cleared for publication does not reflect her real personality. "Excluding this incident, in the past 23 years there has not been one incident in which she was wrong, including the grades in her report card. It was always important for her to do the best things," he said.
