Elizabeth Barrett Browning came from a family of Jamaican slave-owners. She hated slavery. She  married Robert Browning 12 September 1845. His similar slave-owning family came from St Kitts. The couple immediately fled England for Italy, settling in Florence where she died 15 years later. Elizabeth knew she was herself part Black from her slave-trading Moulton grandfather. She guessed that Robert was part Jewish, praising his Bells and Pomegranates as from Aaron's High Priestly robe. When pregnant in Pisa, before coming to live in Florence, she wrote The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point, speaking in the voice of a raped Black slave who then kills her white child.

Indeed, several of the ex-patriot women of the Anglo-Florentine circle came of mixed blood, different colours and other faiths, being therefore scarcely marriageable in English society. Elizabeth herself referred to her part slave ancestry. Maurice (Moisé) Baruch, the conscientious librarian of the English Church in Florence, found his resting place in the English Cemetery, buried by the Anglican Reverend Tottenham, his tomb inscribed in English and in German, the latter in fraktura script in 1867. Thomas Adolphus Trollope noted that the Hungarian patriot Ferencz Pulszky's talented beautiful Viennese wife, Therese Walther, was Jewish. While Thomas Adolphus' friend, Isa Blagden, and his own wife, Theodosia Garrow Trollope, were part Jewish, part East Indian. Nathaniel Hawthorne creates a composite of these in the exotic and beautiful character of Miriam in The Marble Faun.
There were . . . stories about Miriam's origin and previous life . . . It was said, for example, that Miriam was the daughter and heiress of a great Jewish banker, (an idea perhaps suggested by a certain rich Oriental character in her face,) and had fled her paternal home to escape a union with a cousin, the heir of another of that golden brotherhood; the object being to retain their vast accumulation of wealth within the family . . . According to a[nother] . . ., she was the offspring of a Southern American planter, who had given her an elaborate education and endowed her with his wealth; but the one burning drop of African blood in her veins so affected her with a sense of ignominy, that she relinquished all and fled her country . . .

Elizabeth Barrett Browning described Isa Blagden's hospitable home in Bellosguardo with its view down upon Florence as that for her heroines, Aurora Leigh and Marian Erle. Henry James likewise delighted in visiting this vibrant exotic hostess. John Brett's fine painting from Isa's balcony includes the medieval walls as they were then, and huddled outside of them, to our left, the Hebrew Cemetery.

Elizabeth had hoped Lytton would marry Isa Blagden, for she had saved his life one summer in Bagni di Lucca, when the Brownings were also there, but Isa's mixed blood, part Jewish, part East Indian, prevented the match. They both wrote works about their romance: Lytton's Lucile, a kind of Aurora Leigh, in verse; Isa's Agnes Tremorne in prose. I am hoping someone will write a book about Isa and Lytton.

The concern with egoism led to a preoccupation with villainy. In defence of the subject matter of his Newgate novels, Bulwer argued that crime reveals deep truth about human nature. This was another of his seminal ideas. Arbaces the magician in The Last Days of Pompeii (1834), last descendant of the Egyptian royal line, is a gloomy, sensual aristocratic criminal. The theme was more deeply explored in his occult stories. In The Haunted and the Haunters† (1857), he presents a malevolent character who transcends the Byronic to create a fascinating image of daemonic will. In the full version of the story, he is encountered in his contemporary embodiment as Richards, the mysterious long-lived being responsible for the hauntings. Sometimes described as the best ghost story ever written, this is arguably his masterpiece. He cut it short in later editions, because he wanted to develop the theme into a full-length novel. It became A Strange Story (1862), where the same malignant will is personified as Margrave, an evil character who wants to live forever. This desire comes across as a powerful image of life affirmation, though in the form of black magic.

White magic is portrayed in the earlier Zanoni (1842). Zanoni stands for the virtuous version of daemonic will. He has lived for many centuries as a member of a wise circle of initiates who have discovered the secret of eternal life. Taking another's place on the scaffold, during the Reign of Terror, he offered the pattern for Sidney Carton's sacrifice in Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities. Lytton stated that this novel represents the fullest expression of his thought. We can think of it as a Rosicrucian novel of ideas. It brought to a nineteenth century audience the timelessly fascinating Rosicrucian alchemical tradition. The character of Zanoni represents his synthesis of these ideals. For its treatment of these, it belongs with his historical novels.

Late in his career, Bulwer turned against the pretensions of scientific rationalism, expressing hostility towards Marxism, Darwinism and socialist utopias. Other of his contemporaries expressed comparable reservations, not least Tennyson, whose Locksley Hall Sixty Years After shows his discontent with the ideals of progress he had done so much to hymn.The Coming Race (1873) has sometimes been interpreted as one of the earliest blasts in a dystopic tradition that was to culminate in Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World, books which for a few decades offered powerful prophylactics against some disturbing modern tendencies.

How much his thoughts on will derived from philosophical sources like Schopenhauer, if at all, and how much from humbler sources like Balzac, has been a subject of argument.

Whatever his inspiration there are fertile possibilities in the subject. The Coming Race explores some of them in the form of science fiction. Vril is will power made into the direct energy source of society. (The word survives on the supermarket shelf as Bovril). Like Huxley's Brave New World, the novel included speculations about interesting technological developments, but set in the framework of an inhuman and unacceptable future. The scientific perfection of this society is that of another species, and really intolerable to the human being.

High claims have been made for this book, and even for the idea of vril, which has been described as anticipating nuclear energy. As science fiction it long predated Wells who was impressed by it,

Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nino Famines and the Making of the Third World

Recording the past can be a tricky business for historians. Prophesying the future is even more hazardous. In 1901, shortly before the death of Queen Victoria, the radical writer William Digby looked back to the 1876 Madras famine and confidently asserted: "When the part played by the British Empire in the 19th century is regarded by the historian 50 years hence, the unnecessary deaths of millions of Indians would be its principal and most notorious monument." Who now remembers the Madrasis?

In Late Victorian Holocausts, Mike Davis charts the unprecedented human suffering caused by a series of extreme climactic conditions in the final quarter of the 19th century. Drought and monsoons afflicted much of China, southern Africa, Brazil, Egypt and India. The death tolls were staggering: around 12m Chinese and over 6m Indians in 1876-1878 alone. The chief culprit, according to Davis, was not the weather, but European empires, with Japan and the US. Their imposition of free-market economics on the colonial world was tantamount to a "cultural genocide".

These are strong words. Yet it's hard to disagree with them after reading Davis's harrowing book. Development economists have long argued that drought need not lead to famine; well-stocked inventories and effective distribution can limit the damage. In the 19th century, however, drought was treated, particularly by the English in India, as an opportunity for reasserting sovereignty.

A particular villain was Lord Lytton, son of the Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton ("It was a dark and stormy night...") after whom, today, a well-known bad writing prize is named. During 1876 Lytton, widely suspected to be insane, ignored all efforts to alleviate the suffering of millions of peasants in the Madras region and concentrated on preparing for Queen Victoria's investiture as Empress of India. The highlight of the celebrations was a week-long feast of lucullan excess at which 68,000 dignitaries heard her promise the nation "happiness, prosperity and welfare".

Lytton believed in free trade. He did nothing to check the huge hikes in grain prices, Economic "modernization" led household and village reserves to be transferred to central depots using recently built railroads. Much was exported to England, where there had been poor harvests. Telegraph technology allowed prices to be centrally co-ordinated and, inevitably, raised in thousands of small towns. Relief funds were scanty because Lytton was eager to finance military campaigns in Afghanistan. Conditions in emergency camps were so terrible that some peasants preferred to go to jail. A few, starved and senseless, resorted to cannibalism. This was all of little consequence to many English administrators who, as believers in Malthusianism, thought that famine was nature's response to Indian over-breeding.

It used to be that the late 19th century was celebrated in every school as the golden period of imperialism. While few of us today would defend empire in moral terms, we've long been encouraged to acknowledge its economic benefits. Yet, as Davis points out, "there was no increase in India's per capita income from 1757 to 1947". In Egypt, too, the financial difficulties caused to peasants by famine encouraged European creditors to override the millennia-old tradition that tenancy was guaranteed for life. What little relief aid reached Brazil, meanwhile, ended up profiting British merchant houses and the reactionary sugar-planter classes.

The European "locusts" did not go unchallenged. Rioting became common. Banditry increased. In China, drought-famine helped to spark the Boxer uprising. In Europe, the fin de siècle was largely an opportunity for pale-faced men to wear purple cummerbunds and spout rotten symbolist poetry; for colonized peoples it genuinely seemed to presage mass extinction. It was, says Davis, "a new dark age of colonial war, indentured labour, concentration camps, genocide, forced migration, famine and disease."

Davis's attention to the importance of environment may recall the work of the Annales school of historians, but he is far more radical than any of them. His writing, both here and in such classic books as City of Quartz and Ecology of Fear, is closer to that of Latin American intellectuals such as Ariel Dorfman and the Urguayan, Eduardo Galaeno, who for decades have spotlighted capitalism's casual abuse of the third world and who have sought to champion the poor and dispossessed. Such commitment, forcefully and lucidly expressed, is unfashionable these days.

"Class" may be passé in academic circles, yet the catalogue of cruelty Davis has unearthed is jaw-dropping. A friend to whom I lent the book was reduced to tears by it. Late Victorian Holocausts is as ugly as it is compelling. But, as Conrad's Marlow said in Heart of Darkness : "The conquest of the earth, which means the taking away from those who have a different complexion and slightly flatter noses than ourselves, is not a pretty thing when you look at it too much."

Lord Balfour, Zionism and the Illuminati

I was doing some research over the weekend on Lord Arthur Balfour the father of the modern state of Israel. He was highly connected to the Rothschild Illuminati banking family as well as having a background in the occult. This is very interesting because there was a Rothschild banking agent, Jacob Schiff, who was one of the funders for Cyrus Scofield's study bible which replaced the KJV in most seminaries in the US and promoted John Nelson Darby's view of futuristic prophecy. According to Darby Jesus will only return when the Jews are in their homeland.

Balfour had connections to the rothschilds and also the occult:

The S.P.R. is the occult Society for Psychical Research. Before becoming a psychologist in 1890, "James had been trained as a chemist and a physician, so that his evolution from the study of matter to the study of man's religious longings was throughout supported by science, which was the kind of knowledge his century most admired." 26. James was, "a leader of the philosophical movement of Pragmatism and of the psychological movement of functionalism...[His father] Building upon the works of Swedenborg, which had been proffered as a revelation from God for a new age of truth and reason in religion, the elder James [Williams father] had constructed a system of his own that seems to have served him as a vision of spiritual life. This philosophy provided the permanent intellectual atmosphere of William's home life..." 27.

One author states:
"The initial organization was composed mainly of enthusiastic Spiritualists, but at the core was an experienced team of paranormal investigators, the so-called "Sidgwick Group."
The Sidgwick Group consisted of Henry Sidgwick, Frederic W.H. Myers, Edmund Gurney, Walter Leaf, Lord Raleigh, Arthur Balfour and his sisters Eleanor (who married Sidgwick in 1876) and Evelyn (Lady Raleigh), among others... Behold, in November of 1917, as the Russian Rothschilds were on the verge of signing a peace treaty with the Germans, the British Foreign Secretary, a Fabian co-conspirator, and occult-loving buddy of the Rothschilds, Arthur Balfour, writes a letter to Lord Lionel Rothschild asking him to accept his Declaration wherein the Jews could be re-instated into their ancient homeland. In the very next month, the English conquer Jerusalem. Then, just after the War, the Rothschilds set up a Foreign Affairs office in Britain and in the United States, with more to come in other nations, and filled them with Illuminatists under their care and watch...having the job of ratcheting the governments of the world into submission to the Rothschild plan for Globalism. So, you see, the restoration of the Jews to the Holy Land is part and parcel with the establishment of the Rothschild New World Order...because that New Order is intended to be the Biblical Millennium as per a Jewish-occult vision.

Winston Churchill was lord of the British admiralty when the first World War started. Just days before the War began, he, "on his own responsibility, ordered the naval mobilizations which guaranteed complete readiness when war was declared," and, "In Oct. 1914, when Antwerp was falling, he characteristically rushed in person to organize its defense..." (Britannica, 1970, Vol. 5, page 748). This zeal on behalf of Britain and against the Germans was not conducive to the will of the Rothschilds, wherefore, behold, Churchill was soon replaced as lord of the admiralty (May 1915) by the good buddy of the Rothschilds, Arthur Balfour! So, you see, the Rothschilds had not a few political puppets in the Parliament to make things work their way.

The Balfour Declaration (1917)

The British Foreign Secretary, Arthur James Balfour, wrote to Jewish leader Lord Rothshild, to assure him that his government supported the ideal of providing a homeland for the Jews. The British hoped thereby to win more Jewish support for the Allies in the First World War. The "Balfour Declaration" became the basis for international support for the founding of the modern state of Israel. The letter was published a week later in The Times of London as reproduced here.

I have much pleasure in conveying to you. on behalf of His Majesty's
Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet:

His Majesty's Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge
of the Zionist Federation.

Balfour and the occult:

In 1882, Henry Sidgwick, Frederic Myers, Edmund Gurney, Arthur and Gerald Balfour founded the Society for Psychical Research. Sidgwick who became the first president of the S.P.R. continued in this position for nine years. His prestigious connections and influence at Cambridge drew a number of distinguished persons into the Society, which James Webb speculates fulfilled the function of "Spiritualist church for intellectuals." Future Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, who was Sidgwick's ablest student at Cambridge, would serve as president of the S.P.R., as did his brother, Gerald Balfour, and sister, Eleanor Sidgwick. The record shows:

"In 1887, Council Members and Honorary Members of the SPR included a past Prime Minister (William Gladstone)...and a future Prime Minister (Arthur Balfour); ...2 bishops; and Tennyson and Ruskin, two of the outstanding literary figures of the day;...'Lewis Carroll'...with a surprising number of titled persons." (48)

William Gladstone, Prime Minister from 1865-74, called psychical research, "The most important work, which is being done in the world. By far the most important work." William James, the famous psychologist, philosopher and father of author Henry James, became president of the American S.P.R. in 1885. However, in its industry and operation, "... the driving force of the S.P.R. came very largely from the group of younger Trinity men of the 1870′s mentioned previously (p. 64), as having turned, often with reluctance, towards agnosticism. Among the eleven who were named, six — Sidgwick, Myers, Gurney, the two Balfours, and Walter Leaf became not merely members of the S.P.R., but its principle organizers, its very engine room. Closely linked with them was Sidgwick's wife, Nora, and one of his former students, Richard Hodgson." (49)

The Cambridge Ghost Society and the Society For Psychical Research which the two Anglican theologians Brook Foss Westcott and Fenton Anthony Hort helped create were two of these societies. These societies studied and promoted occult phenomena. The elite English Fabian Society, the English socialists, were another group. The Coefficients Club was created by Beatrice and Sidney Webb who were in the Fabian Socialist movement. The Coficients Club included Bertrand Russell, H.G. Wells and the politician Arthur Balfour.

Cecil Rhodes, an important leader of what is now called the New World Order, organized a secret society in 1891 which apparently included Lord Rothschild of England, a member of the ruling elite. Arthur Balfour and Lord Rothschild were also members of the Apostles Club which included Westcott, Hort, Henry Sidgwick and others of the Society for Psychical Research. Thus, some of the members of the British ruling class – Westcott and Hort and others – were joined in this club by a member of the ruling elite, the small group at the top.

The English Balfour Declaration – of Arthur Balfour – of November 1917, and the sending of British troops to Palestine gave the Zionist movement an early victory. The same British elites helped to create dispensationalism within American Christianity, to make that theology which supports Jewish Supremacy and physical, unsaved Jews, into a Christian Zionist movement to further the cause of Zionism.

Balfour Theosophy connection:

Arthur Balfour's brother, Gerald, was also the brother-in-law of Emily Lutyens, a disciple of Theosophist Annie Besant and foster-mother of Jiddu Krishnamurti, who was thought to be Lord Maitreya, the World Teacher of the new age.

"Lady Emily Lutyens, the wife of the architect, is interesting in this context. Before joining the Theosophical Society she had interested herself in state-regulated prostitution, and toyed with the notion of Women's Suffrage. Her sister, Constance, went the whole way, was jailed and forcibly fed. Converted by Mrs. Besant, Emily became for ten years the devoted "foster-mother" and adherent of Krishnamurti. . . even among the highest reaches of society the crisis of consciousness made itself felt. The supernatural was no stranger to the family of Emily Lutyens.

"She herself had been born Emily Lytton, the granddaughter of the occultist Bulwer Lytton, and was the sister-in-law of Gerald Balfour, who with his brother Arthur became president of the Society for Psychical Research. The Balfours' sister, Nora, married Henry Sidgwick, whose own sister, Mary, became the wife of Edward White Benson, and the mother of Robert Hugh. Within this family connection, it is quite natural to find at least one devoted Theosophist." (25)..........

In its early stages, the S.P.R. held séances in the townhouse of Arthur Balfour of which his sister Eleanor was the principle organizer. Various mediums of reputation were investigated with the purpose of ruling out charlatans and determining if entities from the spirit realm or deceased persons did in fact communicate with the living. In 1884, Madame H.P. Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, was graciously interviewed by a committee of the S.P.R. Although Richard Hodgson later would report "the tangle of fraud, intrigue and credulity" associated with her work in India, the SPR was at first –
"...considerably impressed by the evidence of Mme Blavatsky and her friends, and in a report, circulated within the Society but not published, declared: 'On the whole (though with some serious reserves) it seems undeniable that there is a prima facie case for some part at least of the claim made.'" In 1896, Frederic Myers joined the Synthetic Society, founded by Arthur Balfour and modeled upon the famous Metaphysical Society. The Synthetic Society was devoted, not to mere discussion of religious and philosophical questions, but to "contribute towards a working philosophy of religious belief."

Balfour was also a Fabian Socialist:

In 1894, the Fabian Society designated a large bequest to found the London School of Economics and Political Science. Philosopher Bertrand Russell served on the Administration Committee while Arthur Balfour contributed £2000 and also collaborated with Sidney Webb to introduce legislation in Parliament which would give the school university status. H.G. Wells, who had recently joined the Fabians, was "branching out into speculations about a new social order which naturally interested the Webbs." (67)

      Many are still unaware of the eccentric, 180-year-old British theory underlying the politics of American evangelicals and Christian Zionists.
      Journalist and historian Dave MacPherson has spent more than 40 years focusing on the origin and spread of what is known as the apocalyptic "pretribulation rapture" – the inspiration behind Hal Lindsey's bestsellers of the 1970s and Tim LaHaye's today.
      Although promoters of this endtime evacuation from earth constantly repeat their slogan that "it's imminent and always has been" (which critics view more as a sales pitch than a scriptural statement), it was unknown in all official theology and organized religion before 1830.
      And MacPherson's research also reveals how hostile the pretrib rapture view has been to other faiths:
      It is anti-Islam. TV preacher John Hagee has been advocating "a pre-emptive military strike against Iran." (Google "Roots of Warlike Christian Zionism.")
      It is anti-Jewish. MacPherson's book "The Rapture Plot" (see Armageddon Books etc.) exposes hypocritical anti-Jewishness in even the theory's foundation.
      It is anti-Catholic. Lindsey and C. I. Scofield are two of many leaders who claim that the final Antichrist will be a Roman Catholic. (Google "Pretrib Hypocrisy.")
      It is anti-Protestant. For this reason no major Protestant denomination has ever adopted this escapist view.

      In addition to "The Rapture Plot," MacPherson's many internet articles include "Famous Rapture Watchers," "Pretrib Rapture Diehards," "Edward Irving is Unnerving," "America's Pretrib Rapture Traffickers," "Thomas Ice (Bloopers)," "Pretrib Rapture Secrecy" and "Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty" (massive plagiarism, phony doctorates, changing of early "rapture" documents in order to falsely credit John Darby with this view, etc.!).
      Because of his devastating discoveries, MacPherson is now No. 1 on the "hate" list of pretrib rapture leaders!
      There's no question that the leading promoters of this bizarre 19th century end-of-the-world doctrine are solidly pro-Israel and necessarily anti-Palestinian. In light of recently uncovered facts about this fringe-British-invented belief which has always been riddled with dishonesty, many are wondering why it should ever have any influence on Middle East affairs.
      This Johnny-come-lately view raises millions of dollars for political agendas. Only when scholars of all faiths begin to look deeply at it and widely air its "dirty linen" will it cease to be a power. It is the one theological view no one needs!

The German myth that Penre speaks of was "the worship of the god Wotan" (or Odin), the chief Scandinavian god who, I believe, was an ancestral Gogi leader where the Scandinavians had been settled, in the Black-sea region. But not only the Scandinavians, for the ancient Germans were themselves relatives of the Scandinavians, for they too worshipped Odin. It is very interesting that the Bible calls end-time Gog an "Assyrian," while many German researchers claim ancestry in the Assyrians. I should add that both the Scandinavians and the Merovingian Franks are classified today as "Germanic" tribes, and that the Merovingians worshipped Odin very seriously.

Penre continues to tie the Nazis to the Scandinavians by saying: "Von List taught that the Swastica was '...the very act of creation' based on the Norse legend about the creation of the universe." Then, near the end of von List's life, the "Thule Society" was born (1918) after his teachings. Thule was the name of Scandinavia in ancient times, but has since become a mythical island referring to an ancient civilization. Atlantis comes to mind. Penre writes:

"Hitler now became a member of even another occult organization - the Vril Society. Vril was the language spoken by the Atlanteans, composed of sounds and clicks...vril was the power that woke up man's ability to be a Superhuman."

That sounds like "tongues" and the Manifest-Sons-of-God teachings now spreading in charismatic circles. In the next part of my book, I show charismatic connections to Illuminatists/Freemasons, and that Rosicrucian "alchemy," a spiritual transformation of the soul, is very similar to the manifest-Sons doctrine so that we all had better be very careful where the spirit comes from in the churches which teach these things. Penre writes: "The Thule society was an outspring from the Germanen Order, founded in 1912, which also was led by von Sebottendorf. He had published a strange booklet called "Die Praxis der alten türkischen Freimaurerei" [The practice of ancient Turkish Freemasonry]. It was about how alchemy could transformate mankind."

Turkish Freemasonry? For what it may be worth to you, let me tell that, in my attempts to identify the modern Gogi, I found that the Turks are one main branch. Put concisely, the Gogi were a branch of Scythians, and while some western Scythians evolved into the blue-eyed blonde Sarmations who brought forth the Germanic tribes known variously as Alans/Goths, other Scythians (in the far east) brought forth the Huns who in turn brought forth the Kok-Turks, the latter ruled by Khazars who ultimately produced the Seljuk Turks that in turn evolved into the Ottomans who came to rule Palestine for a long time...until the Rothschilds defeated them in 1917 en route to taking control of Palestine. I note that, also in 1917, the Rothschilds, via the Bolshevik Revolution, took control of the other Gogi, the Russians. The defeated Ottoman Gogi were left confined mainly to Turkey, and I doubt very much that they will put forth the Biblical end-time Gog.

Why would Nazis attack fellow-occultists?

According to research (see Adolf Hitler, The Occult Messiah, Gerald Suster), Hitler was devoted to Theosophy and kept a copy of Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine by his bedside. Yet from the 1920s, his thugs ruthlessly attacked and killed adherents of Theosophy, Anthroposophy, Freemasons and others who shared the same occult doctrines. He banned their groups from the Third Reich, and publicly denounced occultists Rudolf Steiner and Aleister Crowley. He ignored astrologers, séance mediums, fortune tellers and similar groups, until 1942 when they also were banned. This has led historians to assume that Hitler was simply anti-occult, a conclusion that fails to explain all the evidence to the contrary.

The Nazi relationship to the Thule Society in particular begs for an explanation. By 1933, when occultist Sebottendorf sought to revive Thule, he found himself roundly rejected by the Nazi party he had nurtured. He retaliated by writing a book, Bevor Hitler Kamm (Before Hitler Came), claiming credit for Thule's role in launching Hitler into leadership. The book was apparently popular and sold well, until the Nazis confiscated all available copies and sent the author into enforced retirement. Thus Nazi origins in the occultic Thule Society, as well as Nazi plagiarism of many Theosophical and Thule terms, were buried; to this day they remain relatively unknown to many students of the Holocaust.

One explanation is camouflage. Hitler seemed determined to keep his occult roots hidden from the general public; the groups and individuals he targeted for early elimination were those who knew of those roots and who might expose him (thereby challenging his control of the "Plan"). This would explain why the Nazis burned every available copy of Sebottendorf's book which proclaimed those roots, and why Rudolf Hess's defection to the West in 1941 prompted Hitler to outlaw all remaining occultists in the Third Reich, such as astrologers, mediums and even parlour magicians. Such actions can be also be understood as attempts to eliminate competition. Hitler recognized occultic power in each of the banned groups which could compete with his own occult enterprise, and eliminated them from the field. He considered Steiner a particular threat, making him the first target. [According to Angeberts, Steiner was an avowed practitioner of "white magic" who viewed Hitler as a tool of "black magic" . Since they both believed they manipulated the same Force, this equality would have suggested to Steiner the possibility of thwarting Hitler, a direct threat which Hitler in turn would have recognized.] This would make sense of the fact that he confiscated (rather than burned) all the books of the outlawed groups, and is the only explanation for his treatment of the Thule founder to whom he owed so much. Heinrich Himmler confirmed this when he defended the official Nazi policy banning astrology: "We cannot permit any astrologers to follow their calling except those who are working for us." (SS astrologer William Wulff, Zodiac and Swastika, quoted by Sklar) While Himmler fell back on the traditional esoteric rationale, "It is not for the broad masses", who would misinterpret the occult secrets, the fact that recognized adepts were also disenfranchised betrays more of an attempt to clear the field.

Hitler did make one exception, however; his 1942 law banning secret societies and confiscating their assets specifically exempted the "old Prussian" Freemason lodges, otherwise known as the Bavarian Illuminati. This group followed the Nazi racial purity ideal far more closely than the "humanitarian Freemasonry" (as the Angeberts distinguish the different streams), and in fact the Bavarian sect shared Hitler's disdain for the other branches of Freemasons, not to mention for the Jews as well. [This would imply another reason why Steiner and the Freemasons, as "humanitarian" strains of occultism, were ruthlessly attacked by both Thulists and Nazis: they were considered too compassionate to do what was needed to usher in the New Age.]
