Where did all the BBC's anti-Zionists go?

Last weekend, in a programme entitled "Death in the Med", the BBC's flagship documentary series Panorama examined the ill-fated Israeli interception of the Mavi Marmara, the only ship from the Free Gaza flotilla which saw confrontation between activists and Israeli troops. It concluded that the main aim of the activists – nine of whom were killed – had not been to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, but rather to orchestrate a political act designed to put pressure on Israel and the international community.

For Israel's British supporters, the BBC's halo has been restored.

Cue a tantrum by pro-Palestinians, with various anti-Israel groups encouraging their followers to bombard the Corporation with complaints, even providing a template letter to work with, and to join in a bout of placard-waving at BBC offices around the UK.

When Israel's supporters mount this type of campaign, it's often portrayed as a visitation from the all-powerful "Zionist lobby" rather than just a bunch of slightly overwrought citizens who really care about Israel, don't understand how journalism works, and aren't particularly interested in hearing the other side of the story.

But now that Israel's supporters are falling over themselves with praise for "auntie", what becomes of the widely held belief within the Jewish community that the BBC is a writhing nest of  anti-Zionist, Arab-loving vipers?

No doubt we'll now seee the flipside to this paranoia. Anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists will start droning on about Jews controlling the media on any website comment threat that will have them.

Between these two extremes, I'll stick my neck out and defend my fellow journalists and producers at the BBC and declare that its coverage of Israel is, in the round, balanced and fair and that it has learned from past mistakes.

Indeed, in the last month, as well as the Panorama investigation on BBC1, Radio 4 has broadcast a well-researched history of Mossad, a revealing documentary on the Muslims who fought for the Third Reich (a subject often raised by Zionists) and a fascinating programme discussing the challenges of teaching the Holocaust beyond the lifespan of its last eyewitnesses.

Ultimately, continually demonising the BBC, one way or the other, is to wage a pointless war. Obsessing over the minutiae of its news reports has become a substitute for avoiding the fundamental and emotionally demanding questions that need to be addressed if the Israel-Palestine conflict is ever to be resolved.
