It's time for US to fully recognize Israel's 'sovereignty' over disputed Golan Heights – Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that the time has come for the United States to "fully recognize" Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, seized from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.

In a tweet on Thursday, Trump said the Golan Heights are "of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel" and to "regional security." His decision will be seen as a diplomatic coup for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The move comes after the US State Department dropped the word "occupied" in relation to the Golan Heights in its annual human rights report for 2018, published last week. Responding on Twitter, Netanyahu thanked Trump for "boldly recognizing" Israel's sovereignty over the land.

Netanyahu had previously urged top US officials to make the declaration and he is expected to meet with Trump at the White House in the coming days.

The Golan Heights were seized in 1967, but officially annexed the territory in a 1981 law. Syria, on the other hand, has sought to regain its sovereignty over the region.

The strategically important land is recognized as part of Syria by the United Nations and UN resolutions have called for Israel to withdraw from the areas, as well as other occupied territories, including Gaza and the West Bank.

Trump has consistently backed Israel when it comes to major regional disputes and last year sparked controversy and outrage among Palestinians and others when he moved the US embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem and said the US officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

'Like Netanyahu's spokesman': What is behind Trump's call to recognize Golan Heights as Israeli

Washington seems to be eager to once again blatantly violate international law, only to allegedly rig polls in another state in favor of one man – the Israeli prime minister, analysts believe.

US President Donald Trump has once again baffled the world with a tweet – this time by calling on the US to "fully recognize" Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights – a Syrian territory it occupied during the 1967 Six Day War and effectively annexed in 1981.

If Washington actually goes for it, such a move would constitute a blatant disregard to international law as well as to the international commitments the US itself assumed when it supported a 1981 resolution, which declared the Israeli occupation of the Golan null and void. So why does the White House see it not just as possible but even a desirable outcome?

'Family Friend'
It seems, out of all probable reasons, that the Trump administration might be motivated by a desire to help one Israeli politician swing a political situation in his favor back at home, where he faces tough competition in forthcoming elections, at a time when he faces corruption charges.

Officially, Trump denied any connection between his "long thought" decision and Netanyahu's potential re-election that he supposedly "had no idea" about, but the timing of his sudden call is just too perfect to be a mere coincidence. Besides, it is an open secret that Netanyahu has close ties to some people in the Trump administration – and particularly to Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner – a fact that has been covered by both American and Israeli media.

"He [Trump] is clearly doing this to help his friend Benjamin Netanyahu with his really difficult re-election campaign amid allegations of corruption," Jim Jatras, a former US diplomat, told RT. The official recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan by the US could come as soon as next week, during Netanyahu's visit to Washington, the analysts believe.

"It is a very transparent gift to Netanyahu," Gideon Levy, a columnist at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, said. Meanwhile, Abdel Bari Atwan, an author and the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm, an Arab world digital news and opinion website, went as far as to say that Trump "seems" to act as a "spokesman for Netanyahu." Kushner, who arguably exerts significant influence on Trump's Middle Eastern policy, could also play a major role in this ploy, as Alessandro Bruno, an independent political analyst, believes.

Intervention in Israeli elections?
As bad as a violation of international law for the sake of one man's well-being might be, it is not the only problem associated with Trump's new reckless idea. The whole move is effectively nothing but a blatant direct interference into Israeli elections, which is quite clearly aimed at giving one particular candidate a boost.

It is a flagrant interference in the election process, Levy said, adding that Netanyahu would likely try to present the whole ordeal as another "historic achievement" of his policies – just like he did with the US recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

It still remains unclear, whether this move would help Washington's favorite to actually win, as, according to Levy, the Golan heights "are not on the table" right now and the US gift to Netanyahu "is unlikely to have a major effect."

But Washington goes its way recognizing the Golan after its previous stunt with moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.

"There is no one in the world, who has any doubts about the legal status of the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights are an occupied territory. And here comes an American president and says: 'no matter what the international law says, no matter what the world says. We recognize it as Israel's sovereign land because Israel holds it for so many years,'" says Levy.

Reaching for political heights? Trump's statement on Golan sparks int'l uproar

US President Donald Trump's idea to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights has sent shock waves throughout the world as nations in the Middle East and beyond slammed it as contrary to international law.

Trump has once again rocked the world with yet another demonstratively pro-Israeli stunt as he said it was time for the US to officially recognize Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights. While Tel Aviv rejoiced at the news, the international community was definitely not amused as nations around the world, including America's close allies, rushed to condemn the idea.

'Completely beyond international law'
Trump's suggestion has infuriated the Muslim world. Syria, which is recognized as the rightful owner of the Golan Heights under international law, condemned what it called an "irresponsible" statement, which shows Washington's blatant bias towards the Israeli occupation and its "contempt" for international law.

Iran said that Trump's "rash" decisions once again only demonstrate that US policies pose a danger to the entire world as they push the already "volatile" Middle East towards "successive crises." The Arab League denounced Trump's statement as well by saying it was "completely beyond international law."

US NATO ally, Turkey, which has some tensions with Washington over its arms imports, also joined the chorus of critics as its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that the legitimization of the occupation of the Golan Heights cannot be allowed.

Egypt earlier also rejected Trump's call by saying that it still sees the Golan as Syrian land. Notably, the only major regional power to stay silent on this occasion was the US' closer ally – Saudi Arabia – which has not yet issued any explicit statement in the wake of Trump's call.

'Contrary to the Middle East peacemaking process'
Following the US president's statement, Russia warned that such calls could further destabilize an already tense situation in the Middle East. "This very idea is by no means conducive to the aims and goal of the Middle East peacemaking process," the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists. "It is more like the opposite is the case."

The Russian president's spokesman said that Trump's statement has so far been just an informal call and expressed his hope that it would stay this way. Earlier, a Russian senator, Oleg Morozov, said that Moscow would never support the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

'Null & void'
The US' Western allies were just as reluctant to support Trump in this case while stressing the importance of abiding by international law. The EU, as well as France and Germany, all said that their position on the matter stays unchanged regardless of any statements made by the US president as they would prefer to stick to the international norms.

An EU spokeswoman said that the bloc does not recognize Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967. The French foreign ministry noted that Israel's claims for sovereignty over the Golan have been "recognized as null and void" by several UN Security Council's resolutions.

Berlin said it rejected any unilateral steps, adding that the Golan Heights are still universally recognized as an occupied territory of Syria. "This is still a status quo under the international law," the German Foreign Ministry's deputy spokeswoman, Ulrike Demmer, said

'Regional security'?
However, even in the face of massive international backlash, Trump seems to be quite persistent in his plan to push his idea through. On Friday, he told Fox Business he had "been thinking about doing it for a long time," adding that it was "very much like ... moving the embassy to Jerusalem."

"I did it. It has been done and it's fine," he said, referring to the moving of the US embassy to Jerusalem, which also sent shock waves through the world at that time and sparked massive protests in the Middle East. He claimed that the Golan Heights "are the same thing."

Trump maintained that it is supposedly all "about regional security" while denying that his call has anything to do with the forthcoming Israeli elections, which he claimed he "had no idea" about.
