Guardian 'fires' veteran cartoonist over Netanyahu sketch
Steve Bell's work was reportedly deemed to be perpetuating an anti-Semitic trope
https://www.rt.com/news/585126-guardian-fires-cartoonist-netanyahu/

British newspaper The Guardian has ended its four-decade working relationship with cartoonist Steve Bell, who said his work criticizing the Israeli government's stance on Gaza was rejected for using a supposedly anti-Semitic trope.

"The decision has been made not to renew Steve Bell's contract," a spokesman for the outlet told The Telegraph on Sunday.

The offending picture depicts Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu preparing to perform surgery on himself. He is seen wearing boxing gloves and holding a scalpel, poised to make a Gaza-shaped incision.

"Spiked again. It is getting pretty nigh impossible to draw this subject for the Guardian now without being accused of deploying 'antisemitic tropes'," Bell wrote on X (formerly Twitter) last week.

He claimed he received "an ominous phone call from the desk" after submitting the cartoon and was told: "Jewish bloke; pound of flesh; antisemitic trope".

https://twitter.com/BellBelltoons/status/1711479539191214202?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1711479539191214202%7Ctwgr%5E887d0218e4885591f01348be13fc6569bb9bdbaa%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fnews%2F585126-guardian-fires-cartoonist-netanyahu%2F

The cartoon was apparently perceived as an allusion to Shylock, the Jewish antagonist in Shakespeare's play 'The Merchant of Venice', who demanded a pound of flesh from his Christian rival if he failed to repay a debt.

Bell said the comparison made no sense to him. The image included the caption "After David Levine," referring to the late cartoonist of The New York Review of Books.

Levine's 1966 work 'Johnson's Scar' parodies a contemporary photo, in which then-US President Lyndon Johnson demonstrated the mark left after having his gallbladder removed. The cartoonist depicts the scar shaped as Vietnam, in reference to the US invasion.

https://twitter.com/langrabbie/status/1714026848940626179?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1714026848940626179%7Ctwgr%5E887d0218e4885591f01348be13fc6569bb9bdbaa%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fnews%2F585126-guardian-fires-cartoonist-netanyahu%2F

Bell was previously accused of anti-Semitism over a 2020 cartoon, in which Labour Party leader Keir Starmer was shown holding the decapitated head of his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn on a platter. It was a commentary on the withdrawal of Corbyn's party whip for his refusal to accept accusations of anti-Semitism.

The cartoon was perceived as an allusion to Salome in the Bible, who when her father King Herod II offered her anything, demanded the head of John the Baptist.

The incident comes at a tense political time, with the UK government fully supporting Israel in its campaign against Hamas. The IDF is currently bombarding Gaza in retaliation for a deadly raid by the Palestinian militant group earlier this month.

BBC takes six reporters off air over 'pro-Palestine' stance
The internal probe comes as the broadcaster faces domestic backlash for allegedly not showing enough support for Israel
https://www.rt.com/news/585097-bbc-israel-hamas-reporters/

British state broadcaster BBC has launched an investigation into six reporters and a freelance contributor working for its Arabic service over allegedly exhibiting anti-Israel bias and cheering attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The probe is related to the journalists' social media activities, namely liking and reposting pro-Palestinian content and criticism of Israel. The online conduct of BBC employees is covered by BBC's 'impartiality' rules.

According to British media reports, the offensive posts, all of which have been taken down, included descriptions of Hamas as "freedom fighters" and the group's surprise attack on Israel as a "morning of hope" for Palestine.

While the staff reporters have not been formally suspended as of yet, only put off-air, the corporation has already parted ways with the freelance contributor, who had been working with the outlet since early October.

"We are urgently investigating this matter. We take allegations of breaches of our editorial and social media guidelines with the utmost seriousness, and if and when we find breaches, we will act, including taking disciplinary action," a BBC spokesperson said on Sunday.

The probe comes as the broadcaster faces domestic backlash over its refusal to call Hamas a "terrorist" group – despite London designating them as such – and describing them as "militants" instead. While the BBC argued it has been doing so for the sake of maintaining "impartiality," multiple fellow British media outlets have attacked the broadcaster over this approach.

Seven former culture secretaries, led by Sajid Javid, penned a letter to the corporation's director-general, Tim Davie, arguing the approach actually damages the BBC's impartiality.

"The BBC's commitment is to impartiality, not indifference. This distinction is now in danger of being blurred. Worryingly, the imprecise language of 'fighters' and 'militants' also serves to conflate terrorists with the Palestinian people, who suffer more than anyone from Hamas' actions," they argued, asking the corporation to "urgently reassess" its approach.

The BBC has also faced online backlash over using very specific language to describe victims of the ongoing escalation between Israel and Hamas, referring to Israeli victims as "killed," and Palestinian – as those who "died" in massive retaliatory air strikes. Another major British broadcaster, SkyNews, has been caught using the same wording to describe the matter amid the escalation.

QuoteYet the newsletter drew widespread criticism for not directly condemning Hamas's killing of Israeli civilians — and the backlash was swift. Workman was ousted as student body president; had a job offer rescinded by a firm they previously interned at, Winston & Strawn; and received a litany of threats online.

PRO-PALESTINE NYU LAW STUDENT SPEAKS OUT AFTER JOB OFFER WAS RESCINDED
With tensions exploding over Gaza on campuses across the country, NYU Law student Ryna Workman lost their position as student body president and a job offer.
https://theintercept.com/2023/10/16/pro-palestine-students-campus-gaza-war/?

THREE DAYS AFTER Hamas's attack on Israel, New York University Law School student body president Ryna Workman sent a newsletter to classmates expressing "unwavering and absolute solidarity with Palestinians in their resistance against oppression toward liberation and self-determination." Workman assigned the blame for "this tremendous loss of life" to Israel's apartheid regime over Palestinians, while not mentioning Hamas, whose attack killed some 1,300 Israelis.

Workman told The Intercept that the intention was an intra-community message that spoke to Israel's 75-year violent regime over Palestine and expressed support for Palestinians' basic human rights.

Yet the newsletter drew widespread criticism for not directly condemning Hamas's killing of Israeli civilians — and the backlash was swift. Workman was ousted as student body president; had a job offer rescinded by a firm they previously interned at, Winston & Strawn; and received a litany of threats online.

Workman told The Intercept they maintain resolve for the sake of two goals: that people should not be punished for advocating for Palestinian human rights; and that everyone who cares about human life should be doing what they can to call for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

"What's been driving me is the resilience of Palestinians in this moment," Workman told The Intercept in their first interview with the news media. "The fact that they are still using their voice, that they are still standing strong, that they are still here, and that they are asking us to continue to speak out and show up for them through this and to not let this be their end."

"And so for me, I will continue to speak out for them and ask for these demands of an immediate ceasefire and this provision of this humanitarian assistance in a safe, secure, and timely fashion to the people of Gaza."

Workman is not alone in facing backlash, with students across the country, particularly at Harvard, facing condemnation for similar statements and even broadly protesting Israel's treatment of Palestinians. The attacks in universities and colleges are part of a longer history of people being targeted for expressing support for Palestinians or criticizing Israel's policies. Palestine Legal, an advocacy group that supports threatened pro-Palestinian activists, says it has responded to 1,707 incidents between 2014 and 2020 alone, including cases of discrimination, disciplinary investigations, and censorship.

"This is an unprecedented moment of anxiety and fear for everyone speaking out publicly in support of Palestinians, who are compelled to do so to stop an unfolding genocide in Gaza," Palestine Legal Director Dima Khalidi told The Intercept. "There has always been a concerted effort to shut down the movement for Palestinian rights through censorship, legal bullying, doxxing, and more, as Palestine Legal has been documenting for years. Now that attack has been magnified by 100."

Blacklists and Harvard
The most notorious anti-Palestinian campus operation is Canary Mission, which compiles dossiers on students, teachers, professionals, or organizations that, according to its website, "promote hatred of the USA, Israel and Jews on North American college campuses and beyond." The blacklist targets supporters of BDS, the movement to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel and Israeli companies, in order to pressure Israel to respect Palestinian rights and cease its occupation.

Canary Mission's targeting of BDS activists came as many state legislatures pushed to ban and, in some cases, criminalize boycotts of Israel. The blacklist fostered an environment where students speaking out in support of Palestinians or against Israel's policies became vulnerable to targeted harassment and discipline in both the academy and employment. The FBI has even targeted activists whose names appeared on Canary Mission's website.

Such efforts have intensified in the wake of Hamas's attack on Israel and the retaliatory war against Gaza. At Harvard University, 34 student groups co-signed a statement similar to Workman's, casting blame on Israel for its deadly attacks, denouncing it for maintaining an open-air prison over Palestinians, and calling on Harvard to "take action to stop the ongoing annihilation of Palestinians."

Subsequently, numerous CEOs, from billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman to Sweetgreen CEO Jonathan Newman, called for the lists of signatories to be made public, so their companies, as Ackman put it, would not "inadvertently hire" any of them. Last Wednesday, a mobile-billboard truck drove around the Ivy League campus, blasting the names and faces of signatories, describing them as "Harvard's biggest antisemites." The Guardian revealed that the funders of the truck are connected to a complex network of right-wing organizations buoyed by millions of dollars.

Several students and groups removed their signatures after the backlash, with some people saying they had not known their group was a signatory or were not aware of the exact content of the statement.

The targeting of the student activists at Harvard has met some resistance — even among those who disagree with the initial statement.

While Jewish Harvard College student Maya Bodnick disagreed with the Harvard students' statement, she was incredulous that Ackman didn't consider the potential for endangerment in such doxxing. In the Forward, Bodnick wrote, "Ackman's actions do not make this painful moment safer for my Palestinian, Jewish, and Israeli peers."

The Harvard chapter of Hillel, a Jewish student organization, similarly condemned the truck. While the Hillel chapter said it rejected the student groups' statement and demanded accountability for the signatories, "under no circumstances should that accountability extend to public intimidation of individuals."

Last week, at least four websites circulated the personal information of Harvard students affiliated with groups that signed the statement, including their full names, past jobs, and hometowns.

The negative attention has stretched to campuses all across the country, as students at Arizona State University, Butler University, Ohio State University, and the University of North Carolina have protested in support of Palestinian rights.

Job Loss — and Support
For some, the consequences of the attacks were immediate. In Workman's case, beyond being ousted as a student leader, their prospective employer, the law firm Winston & Strawn, rescinded their offer in a post on LinkedIn last week, writing that Workman's "comments profoundly conflict with Winston & Strawn's values as a firm."

In a statement Monday, Workman described the various reactions to their newsletter as deflecting from what's really at stake. "Regardless of how terrible my week has been, this attention on one student's email to their fellow law students is entirely misplaced and a dangerous distraction," Workman said, citing Israel issuing an extreme 24-hour evacuation order to people in northern Gaza, and its moves to cut off food, water, and electricity.

"My intent was to call attention to the lack of coverage about Palestinians and to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

Beyond their own consequences, Workman told The Intercept, "I am concerned that this backlash against me and other people who have spoken out as well will have this chilling effect that allows for this unbalanced and dangerous media narrative to continue in which violence against Palestinian civilians is normalized."

Various groups have announced their support for Workman and Palestinian solidarity more broadly, including over 100 NYU law alumni, and 51 students and alumni of NYU Law Jews for a Free Palestine. Both groups sent letters directly to Dean Troy McKenzie, who had distanced himself and the university from Workman's newsletter.

"My message came across as insensitive to the suffering of Israelis during a time of crisis and that is not what I intended," Workman said in their press release. "The killing of children and other innocent civilians is horrific."

"What I wrote was inspired by, and in line with, what many Jewish peace activists and Israelis," they said, "including the editorial board of Israel's largest newspaper, have voiced over the past week in response to the violence."

"My intent was to call attention to the lack of coverage about Palestinians and to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza," Workman said, "a crisis that has only escalated exponentially since I sent that email on Tuesday."

NDP kicks Hamilton MPP Sarah Jama from caucus, saying her actions broke 'the trust' of colleagues
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/ndp-kicks-hamilton-mpp-sarah-jama-from-caucus-saying-her-actions-broke-the-trust-of-colleagues/ar-AA1iI00N

Ontario New Democrats have kicked Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama out of caucus, nearly two weeks after she posted a controversial statement in support of Palestinians.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles said in a statement Monday that while the caucus allows different viewpoints, some of Jama's actions since making her comments "have contributed to unsafe work environments for staff."

"Ms. Jama and I had reached an agreement to keep her in the NDP caucus, which included working together in good faith with no surprises. Our caucus and staff have made significant efforts to support her during an undoubtedly difficult time," Stiles said.

"Since then, she has undertaken a number of unilateral actions that have undermined our collective work and broken the trust of her colleagues."

By midday Monday, Jama was listed with the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as an Independent.

The news comes after a tumultuous couple of weeks for the first-time MPP following her statement Oct. 10 in support of the people of Gaza in the Hamas-Israeli conflict. The statement prompted Premier Doug Ford to call for Jama's resignation and he accused her of antisemitism.

Jama's office served a cease and desist letter to Ford last Thursday, according to her lawyer, Stephen Ellis, and the Legal Centre for Palestine. The letter said if Ford did not remove his social media post and publicly apologize, Jama would pursue legal action for defamation.

"Ms. Jama maintains the post was reckless and malicious," the statement said. "Ms. Jama will not tolerate Premier Ford's attempts to tarnish her reputation in such a public manner."

Stiles responded to the legal notice last week, calling the premier's accusations of Jama "inflammatory" and saying the Ford government was "repeatedly and cynically fanning the flames of division during such a painful time."

Jama also said on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday that her Hamilton Centre office staff were directed to work remotely because they had "received a number of concerning calls and emails that have made us question the safety of remaining open for walk-ins."

NDP will still vote against censuring Jama
The Progressive Conservatives have also tabled a motion to censure Jama in the House.

In Stiles's statement Monday that announced Jama's removal from caucus, she said the Ontario NDP will still vote against the "extreme motion."

"We do not believe the government should use its majority to strip a member of their right to speak and vote," Stiles said. "This is an extreme step that will disenfranchise the voters of Hamilton Centre."

Jama's original statement posted to X called for an immediate ceasefire as well as an "end to all occupation of Palestinian land."

She focused largely on the Palestinian territories, saying "violence and retaliation rooted in settler colonialism have taken the lives of far too many innocent people." She did not directly mention the Hamas attacks.

Kitty Laing Stepping Down as United Agents' Head of Comedy Over Israel Reposts
She will remain with the U.K. agency to manage clients like Michelle Asante, Jamie Demetriou and Jack Brett Anderson.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/kitty-laing-stepping-down-united-agents-israel-reposts-1235628815/#!

Kitty Laing will step down as head of comedy at United Agents after an investigation into social media reposts and shares highly critical of Israel. She will, however, remain with the U.K. talent agency to represent her clients.

"Following the statements made earlier this week, it has been agreed that Kitty Laing will step away from her leadership roles as head of comedy and as a member of the executive committee of United Agents, effective immediately. Kitty will continue to work with her clients and the team at United Agents," the talent agency said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

United Agents on Oct. 24 opened an investigation into Laing, one of its senior agents, after she shared posts on X, formerly Twitter, that were highly critical of Israel as it mounts a campaign in Gaza against Hamas after the deadly Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in southern Israel.

United Agents was quick to disassociate itself from the social media shares by Laing, who represents comedy writers, actors and sketch comedy artists like Michelle Asante, Jamie Demetriou, Jack Brett Anderson, and Dan Harry and Ollie King.

On Tuesday, Laing's reposts and X account were taken down and briefly restored to allow an apology by the head of comedy over her social media shares to be posted: "I would like to unreservedly apologize for my retweets on social media surrounding the horrendous attacks in Israel on October 7th. With hindsight, I realize how naive I have been and that much of the information on social media surrounding the conflict is unsubstantiated and hurtful. I should have taken time to consider this beforehand."

The deleted retweets from the top U.K. comedy agent were flagged by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lee Kern in his own X thread.

UK MP Paul Bristow sacked as aide after call for Israel-Gaza ceasefire
Tory MP had written letter to PM Rishi Sunak urging him to change his position on the conflict and back a 'permanent' end to the hostilities.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/31/uk-mp-paul-bristow-sacked-as-aide-after-call-for-israel-gaza-ceasefire?traffic_source=rss

A British MP for the ruling Conservative Party has been sacked from his role as a ministerial aide after calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza war.

Paul Bristow, an aide to the secretary of state for science, innovation and technology, had written a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week urging him to change his position on the conflict and back a "permanent" end to the hostilities.

The British government says it supports "humanitarian pauses" but not a ceasefire.

In his letter, Bristow said a full ceasefire would save lives and allow humanitarian aid to "reach the people who need it the most".

In a statement on Monday, a Downing Street spokesperson said the decision to remove Bristow from his position came in response to comments deemed "not consistent with the principles of collective responsibility".

Bristow, who represents Peterborough in parliament and co-chairs the all-party parliamentary group on British Muslims, expressed understanding about Sunak's decision.

"It is with regret I leave a job I enjoyed. But I can now talk openly about an issue so many of my constituents care deeply about," he told the BBC.

"I believe I can do this better from the backbenches rather than as part of the government payroll."

Israel in recent days has expanded its air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip, which has been under relentless bombardment since a surprise attack by Hamas, the group running the enclave, inside Israel on October 7.

Officials in Gaza say more than 8,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's air attacks, while in Israel the death toll has topped 1,400, according to Israeli authorities.

Doctor suspended from U of O residency after pro-Palestinian social media posts
Associate professor accused Dr. Yipeng Ge of antisemitism
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/university-ottawa-doctor-suspended-palestine-petition-1.7034464

A petition is calling for the reinstatement of a doctor who says he was suspended from his medical residency at the University of Ottawa after posting pro-Palestinian messages on social media that were also critical of Israel.

Dr. Yipeng Ge has posted multiple times on social media supporting the Palestinian cause, including by criticizing what he calls "apartheid upon Palestinian people" and "settler colonialism."

Earlier this month, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa, drew attention to a number of Ge's posts.

On Freedhoff's Substack page, which he shared on social media, Freedhoff drafted an article that centres on Ge's posts and calls them an example of "antisemitism." In it, he shares screenshots of what he said came from Ge's social media accounts, though at least some posts appear to have since been removed.

They included a post saying "Ottawa standing with Gaza" and featuring a photo of a sign stating "from the rivers to the sea Palestine will be free," which Freedhoff called a "genocidal" chant that implies the elimination of the State of Israel.

Freedhoff describes another post — a picture of posters — as "explicitly equating zionism with the genocide of Palestinians."

When asked whether Ge was suspended, and for what reason, University of Ottawa spokesperson Jesse Robichaud said that it had received complaints about an alleged breach of professional standards by a medical resident.

Robichaud said "interim measures" have been taken while a subcommittee examines the case, though he did not say what those measures entail. He did not respond to followup questions regarding what, specifically, prompted the measures or whether they relate to posts about the conflict in Gaza.

Ge confirmed to CBC over social media that he was suspended about two weeks ago, but declined to comment further on the situation, as did his lawyer. Freedhoff did not respond to requests for comment.

Petition wants apology, investigation
An online petition has garnered more than 65,000 signatures since it was posted on Saturday. It expresses "solidarity with Dr. Yipeng Ge for advocating for the human rights of Palestinians" and calls for the university to reverse the suspension.

It also calls for an apology and a thorough investigation of the decision to suspend him.

Robichaud said the university's faculty of medicine postgraduate professionalism subcommittee will consider whether the resident breached the College of Physicians and Surgeons policy on social media and the faculty's policy on professionalism.

He said the resident "will continue to receive their full salary and benefits as the process unfolds."

In June 2020, the University of Ottawa featured Ge in an article that celebrated him for turning "passion into action for health and social equity."

Ge is not the only doctor to face consequences apparently related to social media posts about the conflict in Gaza.

Last month, a nephrologist at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital was suspended after posting pro-Palestinian views on social media. He also had his address shared online and was threatened.

In addition to his residency with the University of Ottawa's public health and preventative medicine program, Ge is the resident member of the board of directors of the Canadian Medical Association.

Palestinian student expelled from US school after his mother showed solidarity with Gaza
https://english.palinfo.com/news/2023/12/16/311291/

A Palestinian student was expelled from a Florida high school after his mother made pro-Palestinian posts on social media in support of the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli systematic aggression since last October 7.

Jad Abu Hamada, 15, was expelled on November 19 from the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, over pro-Palestinian content his mother, Dr. Maha Almasri, posted on social media criticizing Israel's brutality against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

The school issued a statement saying they considered Almasri's social media posts to be "hateful and incendiary," which Almasri has denied, saying her posts were referring to the mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Jad, who is in 10th grade, has been unable to attend classes since November 19. The expulsion has interrupted his studies and college preparation, his mother told CNN, adding they now have to find a new school.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has requested the US Department of Education investigate the expulsion of Abu Hamada.

During the past weeks, the United States witnessed protests in solidarity with Gaza demanding a ceasefire.

Dozens of members of US President Joe Biden's Office went outside of the White House to join the humanitarian activism. They held a protest calling on the US officials to stop supporting Israel and to listen to the voices calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Late November, three students of Palestinian origin were subjected to an armed attack in the US state of Vermont, in an incident related to the solidarity of Palestinians abroad with the people of the Gaza Strip.

This was preceded by a hate crime carried out by an fanatic man, from the state of Illinois, who stabbed a Palestinian child 26 times on October 16, and injured his mother while chanting anti-Palestinian phrases, amid a wave of hatred and hostility led by US President Joe Biden who fully supports Israel in its aggression on Gaza.

Santa Fired for Criticizing Israel's War on Gaza
https://www.informationliberation.com/?id=64198

Ken Dorph, a consultant who has played Santa for the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce, was fired from his job as jolly Saint Nick for criticizing Israel's war on Gaza during a lecture at a local synagogue.

WATCH:
[Note: the interview is in English.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b9f0sNqfFQ

From CNN, "I criticized the war in Gaza. Then I was fired from my job as Santa":  https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/23/opinions/israel-gaza-santa-fired-sag-harbor-dorph/index.html

QuoteAfter the horrific Hamas attack and the devastating Israeli response, several friends and neighbors asked what I thought. On October 28th, I gave a talk at a local church in Sag Harbor entitled, "Palestine / Israel: What Gives?" to a full house. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

About a month later, I was invited to attend a lecture at the local synagogue — this time as an audience member — on the topic of "Answering the Tough Questions" about Israel. Given the intriguing title, I perceived the invitation as an olive branch. I thought, perhaps narcissistically, that I was specifically invited for my unique Middle East expertise.

I could not have been more wrong. The talk seemed intended to offer instruction on how to deflect tough questions challenging the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and its violence against the Palestinians, rather than inform. I confronted the speaker to counter what I considered inaccuracies in the presentation and when it was over, I shared how disappointing I found it. The talk was unhelpful and sounded to my ears like a propaganda session. [Ed note: the talk was given by Belle Yoeli, a "chief advocacy officer" for the American Jewish Committee.]

I pointed out that it did not remotely address the "tough questions" needed to help bring about peace in the region. The presentation seemed a missed opportunity to have real discussion, at a time when thousands of Palestinians were being killed by American weapons.

Several days later, I received an email from Sag Harbor's Chamber of Commerce informing me that I was to hand in my fur-trimmed red suit, wide black belt and jingles: I was deemed to be too outspoken to be Santa. I was devastated. Not only was I sad for losing the chance to ride in the Village on the firetruck in all my jolly glory, but I felt thwacked in my bowlful of jelly for speaking out in another life, as another character.

A journalist friend contacted the New York Times, and a reporter contacted me. After some agonizing — this is a small town, after all — I decided that I had to share what happened. The newspaper published the story, which was picked up globally. I'm happy to say that, since the story came out, I have been invited to be Santa Claus all over the United States and beyond.

Unsurprisingly, this controversy has amplified the debate about how and whether we can talk about Israel and the Palestinian people without castigation. I fervently hope that the ill will it has stirred locally will transform into good will.

The Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce defended firing Dorph in a statement to CNN:

QuoteThe Executive Committee of the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce said in a statement that Dorph was asked to step aside after he posted an "official-looking Chamber social media post" showing himself in the role of Santa without the approval of the group, and because of his recent actions in public forums. The Chamber pointed to its "long history of hosting a very simple meet-the-Santa, inherently free of any controversy through Santa's anonymity."

The Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce was reportedly sent 11 emails from the synagogue's members demanding he be canceled and chose to cave immediately. https://www.easthamptonstar.com/villages/20231215/santa-sacking-stirs-controversy-sag-harbor

"Any reason given for dismissing Santa other than the emails from [Temple Adas Israel Synagogue] is a post facto fabrication to justify the chambers incorrect decision," Dorph said.

TV anchor booted over 'pro-Israel' coffee cup
Turkish broadcaster TGRT Haber accused its news announcer of "covertly advertising" Starbucks on air
https://www.rt.com/news/589636-turkey-anchor-fired-starbucks-cup/

Turkish broadcaster TGRT Haber TV has sacked an anchor for appearing on air with a cup from Starbucks, the world-famous coffee chain that many in the country now see as pro-Israel. In recent months, Türkiye has seen numerous pro-Palestinian protests due to the bloody conflict between the Jewish state and Hamas militants.

In a statement on Sunday, the channel strongly condemned the actions of news anchor Meltem Gunay and an unnamed director, terminating their contracts for "just cause." It explained that "it is strictly forbidden for the announcer to present on TGRT News TV in a way that will covertly advertise any company."

It further added that "our institution... knows the sensitivities of the Turkish people regarding Gaza and defends them to the end."

The perception that Starbucks is pro-Israel stems from a legal battle between the chain and a union organizing its workers. Shortly after the start of the Hamas-Israel conflict, the latter, officially called Starbucks Workers United, wrote "Solidarity with Palestine!" on X (formerly Twitter).

In response, Starbucks sued the organization for trademark infringement while also claiming that the post angered customers and damaged its reputation. Workers United filed a countersuit, alleging that Starbucks defamed the union by implying that it supports terrorism and violence.

The coffee chain has denied being either pro-Palestine or pro-Israel, stating it opposes violence and "stand for humanity."

While the legal stand-off has led many across the world to boycott Starbucks, it has faced a particularly strong backlash in Türkiye, where the national railway company TCDD accused the chain of "mobbing" its pro-Palestinian workers in the US. TCDD subsequently declared a boycott of Starbucks products, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP party organized sit-in protests at its locations.

Since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel in early October, Türkiye, a Muslim-majority country, has seen several waves of protests targeting Israeli consulates and a Turkish airbase used by the US, a long-time ally of Israel.

Erdogan himself has been highly critical of Israel's military actions, dubbing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the "Butcher of Gaza" and accusing West Jerusalem of war crimes in the Palestinian enclave.

Australia: ABC staff threaten strike after Arab journalist sacked
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20240117-australia-abc-staff-threaten-strike-after-arab-journalist-sacked/

ABC journalists in the broadcaster's Sydney offices yesterday threatened to strike unless management addresses concerns over the unlawful dismissal of radio host Antoinette Lattouf, Anadolu news agency reported.

The award-winning journalist and author, who is of Lebanese heritage, was sacked by ABC last month for sharing on Instagram a report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The internationally-recognised rights watchdog released a report on how starvation was being used as "a weapon of war" by the Israeli government in Gaza. ABC also published a news item on the report.

On Tuesday, the Sydney Morning Herald revealed a leaked chain of WhatsApp messages from a group called Lawyers for Israel who had lobbied for Lattouf to be sacked.

"The ABC sacked broadcaster Antoinette Lattouf after a high-level and coordinated letter-writing campaign from pro-Israel lobbyists that directly targeted the corporation's chair, Ita Buttrose, and managing director David Anderson," the news daily said.

The report reveals that the Israeli lobby "repeatedly wrote to the ABC demanding Lattouf be sacked, and threatened legal action if she was not."

Yesterday, about 80 ABC staff members demanded a meeting with Anderson, who is currently on leave.

They threatened to stage a walkout if their concerns were not addressed.

Lattouf has legally challenged her termination, saying she was sacked on the grounds of "political opinion or a reason that included political opinion" and later expanded the claim to include race, due to her Lebanese heritage.

While ABC has denied Anderson was behind Lattouf's sacking, the broadcaster has told a court that the journalist was removed "because she ignored a direction from managers and shared a controversial social media post from Human Rights Watch."

Lattouf demands a clear public apology, financial compensation and the offer of a proportionate position.

Hearings are scheduled to begin later this week.

In a statement to the Sydney Morning Herald, Lattouf's lawyer, Josh Bornstein, said that after "October 7 and the ensuing conflict in the Middle East, it has become common knowledge in the media industry that Arab and Muslim journalists are being subjected to intimidation, censorship and expulsion."

Elaine Pearson, Asia director at HRW, criticised ABC's move to terminate Lattouf.

"Journalists should be encouraged to amplify human rights reporting, not penalised for doing so," Pearson said on X.

Labour MP suspended after 'hollow' apology for genocide remarks on HMD
Edmonton MP Kate Osamor has had the whip withdrawn by her party after suggesting Gaza should be added to list of genocides
https://www.thejc.com/news/labour-mp-suspended-after-hollow-apology-for-genocide-remarks-on-hmd-sydmmb73

Labour's chief whip has suspended MP Kate Osamor from the Parliamentary Labour Party pending an investigation after she said that Gaza should be added to a list of "recent genocides" when taking part in remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day.

Kate Osamor, the MP for Edmonton, sent local party members an email on Friday pointing out that it was HMD on Saturday.

Osamor said she thought there was an "international duty to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust."

She went on to list the "more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia" to be remembered on HMD, adding that there was one also happening "in Gaza."

Osamor tweeted an apology on Friday night saying: "I apologise for any offence caused by my reference to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza."

A Board of Deputies statement condemned "the attempts by Kate Osamor to link the Holocaust to the current situation in Gaza. The industrialised mass murder of six million Jews is in no way comparable to Israel's efforts to uproot Hamas from Gaza.

"We believe Ms Osamor was perfectly aware of what she was saying and therefore view her apology as utterly hollow. We call for the Labour Party to immediately remove the whip."

The London Jewish Forum also condemned the MP's comments. It said Osamor had "insulted the Holocaust survivors who so bravely share their testimony.

"Kate Osamor's apology is too little too late, she should be suspended from the PLP whilst this incident is properly investigated."

Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust described Osamor's statement as a "disgusting malicious distortion of the truth."

She said it was "a painful insult to survivors of the Holocaust and particularly distressing to see on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day."

A spokesman for the Jewish Labour Movement said: "This is wholly inappropriate. This week we have been commemorating the murder of six million Jews in the Holocaust — and those who perished in subsequent genocides, as listed by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

"Unilaterally co-opting the war in Gaza, despite the horrific suffering there, on to that list is wrong and offensive."

From Gamers Rise Up
Chicago Jews Lynch New Black School Board President for Supporting Palestine, Questioning 9/11
https://gameruprising.to/thread-58203.html

A lynch mob led by vulnerable, powerless Jews who are hated for no reason has forced Chicago's radical left-wing "progressive" black mayor, Brandon Johnson, to demand the resignation of his hand-picked man to lead the Chicago Board of Education, Rev. Mitchell Johnson, because of social media posts critical of Israel, female materialism, and the official 9/11 story.

Leading the charge was the city's Jew alderwoman.

Joining the pile-on was the fat, rolling-in-Jew-mobster-money governor of Illinois, JB (Jew Blimp? Jew Bastard?) Pritzker.

After resigning, the good reverend was forced to kneel and apologize, according to media reports.

QuoteThe recently appointed head of Chicago's school board resigned Thursday after reports from the Jewish Insider and Chicago Sun-Times exposed what some Chicago leaders called antisemitic and sexist posts on his social media, as well as a 9/11 conspiracy post.

The Rev. Mitchell Ikenna Johnson, who was president of the Chicago Board of Education for just seven days, resigned effective immediately at Mayor Brandon Johnson's request Thursday over statements "that were not only hurtful but deeply disturbing," the mayor said in a release.

"I want to be clear: Antisemitic, misogynistic, and conspiratorial statements are unacceptable," the mayor said.

The mayor had appointed Mitchell Johnson to the board's top post. Mitchell Johnson's abrupt departure follows weeks of tumult at the school board, which saw every member resign at once earlier this month.

"We want every single child in the city of Chicago to feel protected and loved, and particularly right now our Jewish community," the mayor said about the resignation while speaking Thursday at a news conference about a separate issue: an announcement of terrorism and hate crime charges against a person who police say shot a Jewish man who was walking to a synagogue in the city over the weekend.

The media reports about the posts on Mitchell Johnson's social media – which the Jewish Insider reported stretched back for months – had prompted Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and nearly the entire Chicago city council to call for his resignation.

According to a post shared by WMAQ's longtime political reporter Mary Ann Ahern, a photo of the 9/11 terror attacks was reposted on Mitchell Johnson's social media in January – one that said "3,000 experts agree: 9/11 really was an inside job" with the caption "Facts!!" CNN is working to independently verify this post.

A CNN review of just a few of the posts on Mitchell Johnson's Facebook account shows that on May 27, he reposted a picture with a message that said: "When a man earns money he dreams of giving his family and wife the best. But when a woman earns money she feels she does not need her man and her family. Sounds harsh but it's reality."  The photo was captioned: "Sad Facts."

Another post highlighted a video in which an audience member asks writer and podcaster Max Blumenthal if "Palestine" initiated the war with Israel with Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023. Blumenthal argues that Israel initiated the war in 1948.

"If you allow ignorance to be your guide, injustice will eventually be at your front door. We should all support a free and independent Palestinian State," said the caption on the post.

Pritzker called for Mitchell Johnson's resignation Thursday.

A city council letter calling on Mitchell Johnson to step down was penned by 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein on Wednesday, and co-signed by dozens of city council members.

"We are deeply troubled by the antisemitic and pro-Hamas comments made by Rev. Mitchell L Ikenna Johnson," Silverstein wrote. "The thousands of Jewish families who send their kids to Chicago Public Schools deserve representation who values them and does not express hate toward the Jewish community."

CNN has attempted to contact Mitchell Johnson for comment but has not received a response. CNN also has sought additional comment from Pritzker and Silverstein.

Mitchell Johnson apologized for his comments, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The school board, currently appointed by the mayor, oversees Chicago Public Schools. The panel is scheduled to transition to a mix of elected and appointed members in January.

The Jews have got to understand, they are making an Overwhelming case for concepts like "Jewish control of the Media".

These are poo-poo'ed as anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

But look at Larry Ellison.

Larry Ellison at near the heart of the Criminal Sect of Judaism, as the overwhelming beneficiary of CIA (NSA, etc.) database software.

And he just used his Oracle dollars to buy ==> Paramount, through his son.

Larry looks remarkably pain-free in his recent photo's.  Yet he's about the same age as Trump.  Which means LOTS of Arthritis pain.

I wonder what meds. his Jew doctors prescribe.
Planet of the SWEJ - It's a Horror Movie.
