Azerbaijan's statement about the opening of the embassy in Israel was not a surprise. The Israeli's welcomed the decision - George Deek, Israeli ambassador to Azerbaijan tweeted - "Time to open that bottle!" He posted a photo of wine flanked by the flags of the two countries. Not sure whether a bottle of wine would have been appropriate as Azerbaijan is meant to be Muslim majority country - but anyway, I suppose it could have also been non alcoholic wine!

So why did the Azerbaijanis decide to open an Israeli embassy - especially with a right winged government in power over in Israel?

Well - a lot of it has to do with Oil and gas exports which are the foundation of the Azerbaijani economy. The government seeks to develop its resources, the country truly holds enormous wealth and wants make as much money as possible. Israel today imports most of it's oil from Azerbaijan - so Azerbaijan is a happy ziopig!

But there's also a  problem, Azerbaijan is physically located next to Iran, and tensions have been growing in their relations, not just because of Iran's position in the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. If you didn't know, Iran supports Christian Armenia and not Shiite Muslim Azerbaijan - but also, Azerbaijan is an important market for arms sales to Israel, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, and both Azerbaijan and Israel cooperate in the field of intelligence and security, regularly exchanging confidential information about their enemies. Mostly the Iranians!
