The Bird is Caged: Elon Musk Commits to 'Combat Hate' After ADL Threatens 'Dire Consequences' For Replatforming 'Far-Right'
Musk pledges Twitter "will continue to combat hate and harassment" after speaking with ADL and far-left "civil society leaders"
https://www.informationliberation.com/?id=63439

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that he talked with ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt and other "civil society leaders" about how Twitter "will continue to combat hate and harassment" and will "not allow anyone who was de-platformed for violating Twitter rules back on" the site without "a clear process for doing so."

"Talked to civil society leaders @JGreenblattADL, @YaelEisenstat, @rashadrobinson, @JGo4Justice, @normanlschen, @DerrickNAACP, @TheBushCenter Ken Hersch & @SindyBenavides about how Twitter will continue to combat hate & harassment & enforce its election integrity policies," Musk said.

"Twitter will not allow anyone who was de-platformed for violating Twitter rules back on platform until we have a clear process for doing so, which will take at least a few more weeks," he said in a follow-up tweet.

The ADL on Monday threatened Musk with "dire consequences" if he replatformed "dangerous individuals" like Alex Jones, Nick Fuentes, Steve Bannon, Andrew Tate, and David Duke.

Musk's stated goal to restore free speech to Twitter has now been abandoned.

https://twitter.com/ColumbiaBugle/status/1514659066320068653?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1514659066320068653%7Ctwgr%5E7ebae297b32d302541c24bf01e5e1e2a0d12c2f5%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.informationliberation.com%2F%3Fid%3D63439

All it took to get Musk to cave was the ADL organizing a global advertiser boycott against him.

Greenblatt put out a statement on Wednesday through his global boycotting pressure operation "Stop Hate For Profit":
Stop Hate For Profit Statement On Meeting With Elon Musk

New York, NY, November 2, 2022 -- The Stop Hate for Profit Coalition has been alarmed about the recent and potential changes being discussed for Twitter. We have already seen an uptick in extremist activity, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, disinformation and more. Advertisers share our concerns, and we have been in conversation with them about whether Twitter remains a safe place for advertising.

We discussed our profound concerns with Elon Musk yesterday, and had a productive conversation. We appreciate that he committed to not re-platforming anyone until there is a clear and transparent process; maintaining the infrastructure, enforcement and policies for election disinformation until at least after mid-term elections have been finalized; and including representatives of groups who face hate-filled violence in designing and participating in content moderation policies and processes, including a proposed council.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Much more needs to be done to reduce lies and hate on Twitter, and backtracking on the last year of progress on the platform is not an option for users, advertisers or society overall.

Actions speak louder than words, and we will be monitoring Twitter's policies and enforcement in the coming days.
Musk has kept Trump-hating lunatic Yoel Roth as the site's chief censor.

Roth wrote his dissertation on Grindr and gay hook up apps.

Musk said on Monday that he recommends people follow Roth "for the most accurate understanding of what's happening with trust & safety at Twitter."

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

"Contemporary examples of antisemitism in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere could, taking into account the overall context, include, but are not limited to:

THE 11 POINTS:

Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.
Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.
Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.
Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g. gas chambers) or intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist Germany and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust).
Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust.
Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.
Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.
Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.
Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.
Antisemitic acts are criminal when they are so defined by law (for example, denial of the Holocaust or distribution of antisemitic materials in some countries)."

Elon Musk threatens 'thermonuclear name and shame'
The billionaire has warned that he may identify advertisers that boycott Twitter, enabling backers of free speech to punish them
https://www.rt.com/news/566018-twitter-owner-may-expose-boycotting-advertisers/

Twitter owner Elon Musk has warned that he may identify advertisers that are boycotting his social media platform under pressure from leftist groups, a move that would likely trigger counter-boycotts as the billionaire's supporters push back against corporate America in defense of free speech.

"A thermonuclear name and shame is exactly what will happen if this continues," Musk said on Friday night, referring to the sharp drop in revenue that he's seen at Twitter because activist groups are pressuring advertisers to stop using the platform.

He made the comment in response to a Twitter post by former US Senate aide Mike Davis, who suggested that exposing the advertisers would enable Musk's 114 million followers on the platform to launch a counter-boycott.

The Tesla CEO completed his $44 billion takeover of Twitter last week, vowing to restore freedom of speech in America by providing a "digital town square" where a wide range of beliefs can be freely debated. Dozens of left-wing activist groups responded by trying to persuade advertisers to stop doing business with Twitter, arguing that Musk would make it a "direct threat to public safety" by allowing "harmful" content. Some of the groups, such as Media Matters, are backed by activist billionaire George Soros.

Twitter relies on advertising for more than 90% of its revenue, though that may change under Musk, who has begun charging users $8 monthly to have "verified" status on their accounts.

Musk, who ranks as the world's richest person with a fortune estimated by Forbes at over $208 billion, said earlier on Friday that Twitter had suffered a "massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation. We did everything we could to appease the activists." He added that the activists were "trying to destroy free speech in America."

Musk fired about half of Twitter's 7,500 employees to shore up the finances of a business that he claimed was operating at a loss before he took over. "Regarding Twitter's reduction in force, unfortunately, there is no choice when the company is losing over $4 million a day," he said. Affected employees were offered three months of severance pay.

Musk has managed to drive out the degenerate jew, Yoel Roth, who was leading the censorship at Twitter.  Read more about this piece of shit Roth here:  Yoel Roth

Executives flee Twitter as Musk mentions 'bankruptcy' – media
The billionaire owner seeks to make cuts in the "over-staffed" and unprofitable platform
https://www.rt.com/business/566314-musk-dire-twitter-bankruptcy/

At least six executives have reportedly resigned from Twitter this week. The social media platform's new owner, Elon Musk, called an all-hands meeting on Thursday, announcing a return to office hours and mentioning the possibility of bankruptcy unless the company can find a way to become profitable.

Among the departures was the head of safety and moderation, Yoel Roth, Bloomberg reported, citing insider sources. Musk had kept Roth on despite complaints from conservatives that he had been responsible for much of the political censorship on the platform – one of the reasons the Tesla and SpaceX CEO cited for buying the company.

"The economic picture ahead is dire," Musk wrote in an email calling the meeting, according to the New York Times. "Without significant subscription revenue, there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn."

Unless Twitter can generate profits from its $8 monthly Blue program, bankruptcy is a very real possibility, Musk reportedly said, adding that the platform is currently too dependent on advertising.

A number of companies have pulled their ads from Twitter in recent weeks, due to a pressure campaign by activists unhappy with Musk's buyout of the company – and endorsement of Republicans in the US midterm elections.

Musk also told staff that the days of free food, teleworking, and other perks were over, according to multiple outlets. "If you can physically make it to an office and you don't show up, resignation accepted," he reportedly said.

Along with Roth, five other executives quit this week. The heads of privacy, information security and compliance resigned just before the deadline for submitting a report to the US government, required under a 2011 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC is "tracking recent developments at Twitter with deep concern," spokesman Douglas Farrar said, adding that "no CEO or company is above the law." On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden told reporters "there's a lot of ways" to investigate Musk's acquisition of Twitter as a potential national security risk.

Musk has warned the public that Twitter "will do lots of dumb things in coming months." On Thursday, he tweeted that the platform's usage continued to rise: "One thing is for sure: it isn't boring!"

Bari Weiss, crusader against antisemitism, takes leading role in Elon Musk's push to limit Twitter moderation
https://www.jta.org/2022/12/13/politics/bari-weiss-crusader-against-antisemitism-takes-leading-role-in-elon-musks-push-to-reinstate-conservative-and-extremist-voices

Bari Weiss, a prominent commentator on antisemitism in the United States, is taking a leading role in Elon Musk's efforts to reshape Twitter by criticizing the platform's past efforts to combat bigotry and harassment.

Starting last Thursday, Weiss has been releasing Twitter threads with what she and another opinion journalist, former Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi, have deemed the "Twitter Files" — instances of how former Twitter moderators removed content they deemed as false or dangerous.

Making use of unusual access to Twitter's internal records and systems, Weiss and Taibbi have made the case that Twitter has been subject to politically motivated decisions about what to remove by a "secret group" of high-level executives.

Those executives were tasked with executing Twitter's moderation policies in sensitive cases, and the leaked communications show them doing so in politically neutral terms. But Weiss and Taibbi have argued that the suspensions doled out to conservative accounts, including former President Donald Trump, reflected a deep bias at the company.

Twitter shut down its Trust and Safety Council advisory group, which included 100 independent civil and human rights organizations, on Monday night. The group was formed in 2016 to address hate speech, child exploitation and other issues stemming from Twitter activity.

Musk's supporters have been receptive, even forcing into hiding on Monday Yoel Roth, the Jewish former head of trust and safety at Twitter that Musk has falsely accused of stoking pedophilia and who has been targeted in Weiss' tweets as well.

Weiss' Twitter activism puts her at odds with a leading U.S. antisemitism watchdog, the Anti-Defamation League, which has long pushed for stricter moderation on Twitter and called for an advertiser boycott after Musk acquired the platform and expressions of hate spiked on it.

Weiss — who first vaulted into public view for calling out what she said was antisemitism on her college campus, and who quit a columnist job at The New York Times over what she described as bullying from colleagues — has worked with the ADL in the past. In conjunction with her 2019 book "How to Fight Antisemitism," she has appeared at multiple events with the organization, as recently as November.

Now, she is a leading voice opposing what the ADL's leadership says is one of the most pressing issues compromising American Jews' safety.

The ADL declined to comment on Weiss' involvement with Musk's new moderation strategies. Weiss did not return requests for an interview.

Since Roth resigned from Twitter last month, he and Musk have exchanged criticisms on the platform. Over the weekend, Musk misrepresented a snippet from Roth's graduate dissertation, writing: "Looks like Yoel is arguing in favor of children being able to access adult Internet services."

On Monday night, Musk tweeted a phrase with a rabbit emoji that has become popular with followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory movement. He denied that he was referring to the movement or aiming a tweet at its followers, but QAnon communities across different platforms responded with excitement to his tweet, Vice News reported.

Accusations of pedophilia against public figures are commonplace in QAnon, which experts say also draws on antisemitic tropes.

SAID ARIKAT AT DEC. 16 STATE DEPARTMENT BRIEFING. SCREENSHOT FROM STATE DEPARTMENT VIDEO.

Twitter suspends Palestinian journalist Arikat, and media response — silence
In yet another demonstration of anti-Palestinianism in the U.S. mainstream, there is no outcry over Twitter's arbitrary suspension of Said Arikat, longtime D.C. correspondent for Al-Quds newspaper.
https://mondoweiss.net/2022/12/twitter-suspends-palestinian-journalist-arikat-and-media-response-silence/?

t was big news when Elon Musk suspended the Twitter accounts of at least nine tech journalists last week (over alleged dox-ing) and then reinstated them this week after Twitter users demanded as much.

But in yet another demonstration of anti-Palestinianism in the U.S. mainstream, there has been scarcely any attention given to the arbitrary suspension of Said Arikat, a fixture at the State Department briefings as the longtime Washington correspondent for Al-Quds newspaper, a Palestinian publication.

Arikat said he woke up on December 3 to read a notice from Twitter that his account had been "permanently suspended after careful review". No reason was given; and despite the assurance that he could appeal the suspension if he thought the decision was wrong, Twitter has not responded to numerous letters Arikat has sent the media giant.

The only reason for Arikat's suspension would seem to be that he is Palestinian and speaks up for Palestinians. His case has elicited no concern in the press. Let alone efforts to discover the pretext for the action.

Al-Quds is clearly being targeted as a Palestinian source. Today there is news that Facebook has shut down the official page of the Al-Quds newspaper.

In recent days Said Arikat has been smeared in the Zionist press as "anti-Israel" because of his questions of U.S. policy at State Department briefings. A month ago, the Jerusalem Post attacked Arikat as a supposed propagandist and conceded that he has wide influence on social media.

Arikat's last action on twitter was a retweet on December 2 of a tweet by Dana Ben-Shimon, the Palestinian affairs correspondent for a Zionist newspaper, Israel Hayom, about what Palestinians were describing on social media as the "Cold Blooded Execution" of an unarmed man, Ammar Mufleh, 23, in Huwara south of Nablus by Israeli forces during an attempted arrest. The killing has rightly drawn international outrage.

SAID ARIKAT'S LAST RETWEET.

Arikat's suspension is outrageous and unfair. He has retweeted news items thousands of times in recent years without incident. As anyone who has followed his questions at the State Department and his tweets and writings and appearances knows, the 74-year-old is a courtly and soft-spoken reporter (formerly the spokesperson for the United Nations in Iraq) with a point of view reflecting the interests of the Palestinian community, particularly Jerusalem.

At this website, we rely on Arikat to raise important human rights issues with the State Department. Otherwise, State would often face no scrutiny whatsoever for its unbreakable support for Israel. Like when Arikat stood up for Shireen Abu Akleh after her killing last May.

"As bad as Twitter is, I think it's been positive for the Palestinian people," Arikat says.

December 2, Arikat's last day on Twitter, was unremarkable. As is customary, he retweeted a number of tweets he found newsworthy, including comments by Peter Beinart, Noura Erakat, Benzion Sanders of Breaking the Silence, and citations of Arikat's own article that day (on the pillorying of UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese over her former criticisms of the Israel lobby). He went to bed that night after retweeting the execution tweet by Dana Ben-Shimon.

Arikat also says that his DM's were hacked in the last month, and some people received DMs purporting to be from him that were not.

As a dean of State Department reporters, who has been in that briefing room for more than 20 years, Arikat tells me that several mainstream reporters have reached out to him in sympathy, but none has actually done anything to publicize the outrage. Hey folks– let's put our shoulders to the wheel, this is a no-brainer.

P.S. Arikat's suspension came up at a State briefing on Dec. 16. Spokesperson Vedant Patel was critical in a nuanced manner of the tech journalists' suspensions by Twitter. "It is certainly difficult to square how these removals are consistent with promoting free exchange. But again, social media companies make their own independent decisions on content moderation, and I'm just not going to speak to those actions."

Arikat interjected, "By the way, they suspended me without explanation."

Patel repeated the boilerplate: "Our support for free speech and freedom of the press is well documented."
