"2001: A Space Odyssey" was not only a retelling of Arthur C. Clarke's novel, but also a research and development project sponsored by the US govt, that assisted Stanley Kubrick in the creation of the Apollo fake moon landing footage.

"The Shining" was Kubrick's personal  story and a confession, that he secretly worked on the Apollo footage for NASA.
