EU: Hamas responsible for Gaza violence
The European Union, heavily criticized for being effectively non-existent during the Gaza crisis, has implied that Hamas was the real culprit in the conflict.

In a written statement by the commission, the EU called on Hamas to refrain from violence while welcoming Israel's declaration of a cease-fire. "I call on Hamas to refrain from any violence in order to allow for an end to the terrible human suffering," said Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European commissioner for external relations and European neighborhood policy. There was no mention at all about Israel's responsibility in the bloodshed.

"It was indispensable to have a cease-fire. I welcome the fact that Israel has declared a cease-fire. It should also allow the EU and other donors to deliver much needed humanitarian assistance," the commissioner said.

In the first days of the Israeli offensive, EU term president the Czech Republic created uproar when it characterized the Israeli offensive in Gaza as "defensive" rather than "offensive." Following rising criticism, however, the Czech Republic apologized and withdrew its statement.
