Tokyo Olympics show director FIRED on eve of opening ceremony over decades-old 'Holocaust joke'

The director for the Olympics opening ceremony, comedian Kentaro Kobayashi, has had his contract terminated just a day before the games kick off, after a 1998 comedy sketch surfaced in which he joked about the Holocaust.

Olympic Organizing Committee president Seiko Hashimoto announced the move during a press conference on Thursday, saying Kobayashi had been fired and that officials would undertake a last-minute "review" of the opening and closing ceremonies, both of which were meant to be directed by the comedian.

"It has come to our notice that Mr. Kobayashi used comments that made fun of a tragic fact in history in his past performance," Hashimoto said, but added that she would not resign over the scandal.

The controversial joke that landed Kobayashi in hot water came during a sketch performed with his comedy duo, the Ramens, in which he reportedly made an offhand remark about playing a Holocaust 'game,' though some Japanese-fluent netizens have disputed the exact context of the gag.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish rights group based in the US, condemned Kobayashi for the two-decade old quip, saying "Any association of this person to the Tokyo Olympics would insult the memory of six million Jews and make a cruel mockery of the Paralympics."

Any person, no matter how creative, does not have the right to mock the victims of the Nazi genocide.

The comedian is not the first Olympic staffer to have faced the chopping block. In March, the games' creative head, Hiroshi Sasaki, resigned after suggesting a plus-size entertainer set to perform at the opening ceremony could appear in pig ears, and calling her an "Olympig." Earlier this week, Japanese composer Keigo Oyamada, who was tapped to write music for the opening ceremony, also stepped down after interviews from the 1990s resurfaced, in which he spoke of mercilessly bullying his high school classmates, including a disabled student.

The Tokyo Olympics have encountered a long series of troubles, having been postponed for a full year due to concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Even with the opening ceremony set to kick off in less than a day, the "cursed" games could still face disaster, with the organizing committee warning as late as Tuesday that it still hadn't ruled out canceling the event altogether, citing lingering coronavirus fears.

For first time, Olympics opening ceremony honors Israeli athletes murdered in Munich
https://www.jta.org/quick-reads/for-first-time-olympics-opening-ceremony-honors-israeli-athletes-massacred-at-munich

(JTA) — For the first time ever, the Olympic Games held a moment of silence during the opening ceremony for the 11 Israeli athletes murdered during the Munich Olympics in 1972.

There, the Palestinian terrorist group Black September attacked members of the Israeli Olympic team, ultimately killing six coaches and five athletes, as well as a West German police officer who participated in an unsuccessful raid to free the hostage athletes.

Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano, widows of two of the murdered athletes, have long advocated for the International Olympic Committee to acknowledge the massacre in the opening or closing ceremony. But the IOC has never before heeded the call, at times suggesting that honoring the Israeli athletes could be divisive.

"We must consider what this could do to other members of the delegations that are hostile to Israel," an Israeli committee member told the BBC in 2004, when a small memorial was held at the Israeli ambassador's house in Athens before the Olympics there.

In 2012, ahead of the London Olympics, the IOC rejected an international campaign for a moment of silence. "The opening ceremony is an atmosphere that isn't fit to remember such tragic events," Jacques Rogge, then the leader of the IOC, said at the time.

Ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, the first official Olympic ceremony was held to honor the victims — but not during the opening ceremony; instead, it was held two days before.

Now, a year away from the 50th anniversary of the terror attack, the Olympics held a moment of silence. The event, which had not been previously announced, came a day after the opening ceremony's creative director, a Japanese actor and comedian, was fired over a Holocaust joke he made in the 1990s.

Eventually, athletes around the world will refuse to even compete with Israhellies - either because they loathe them or fear them - which means that Israhellies will win all the medals - gold, silver, and bronze - by default.  The jews will then declare that jews are unbeatable.   <:^0

Algerian judoka quits Olympics to avoid Israeli opponent
https://www.jta.org/quick-reads/algerian-judoka-quits-olympics-to-avoid-israeli-opponent

(JTA) — An Algerian judoka reportedly pulled out of the Olympics on Thursday after seeing his tournament draw, which would have pitted him against an Israeli opponent in the second round.

"We were not lucky with the draw. We got an Israeli opponent and that's why we had to retire. We made the right decision," Fethi Nourine's coach told Algerian media.

Nourine would have had to face Tohar Butbul in the under 73 kg division. He similarly pulled out of the 2019 World Championships in order to avoid Butbul, according to The Times of Israel.

Nourine is not the first athlete to intentionally evade an Israeli judoka. Iran's judo federation has long forced its athletes to throw matches to avoid competing against Israelis. The International Judo Federation banned the Iranian team from international competition for a few days this spring over the policy but reinstated them on March 2.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, an Egyptian judoka refused to shake hands with Israeli Ori Sasson after losing to him. Sasson would go on to win a bronze medal in the over 100 kg group.

Butbul is one of several judokas on the impressive Israeli squad, which has a chance of taking home some medals in the sport during the Tokyo Games.

Algerian athlete who withdrew from Tokyo Olympics to avoid clash with Israeli faces action from judo bosses over 'discrimination'
https://www.rt.com/sport/530156-algerian-judo-israel-olympics-withdraws/

An Algerian judoka who withdrew from the Olympics because his political support for Palestine meant he did not want the prospect of facing an Israeli has been suspended, with judo chiefs citing discrimination and "principles".

Judo star Fethi Nourine pulled out of the men's 73kg event to dodge a potential meeting with Tohar Butbul, of Israel, in the round of 32, calling the draw a "shock" and "thunder".

The Tokyo hopeful claimed he did not want to "get his hands dirty", while his coach, Amar Ben Yaklif, described a possible match-up with Butbul as "unlucky".

International Judo Federation (IJF) bosses have now temporarily suspended Nourine and Ben Yaklif, explaining in a statement that "no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas".

https://twitter.com/eslam_dw20/status/1418930964961677317?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1418930964961677317%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fsport%2F530156-algerian-judo-israel-olympics-withdraws%2F

The federation's Disciplinary Commission and the National Olympic Committee of Algeria could now impose further sanctions on the pair, according to reports.

"Judo sport is based on a strong moral code including respect and friendship, to foster solidarity," continued the statement.

"We will not tolerate any discrimination, as it goes against the core values and principles of our sport."

Nourine had been due to take on Sudan's Mohamed Abdalrasool in the first round on Monday, when a victory would have earned him an encounter with Butbul courtesy of a first-round bye for the Israeli.

Ben Yaklif insisted that he had "made the right decision" with his athlete, but the Algerian Olympic Committee now intends to send Nourine home.

Politically-motivated conflicts involving Israeli athletes are not entirely uncommon at the Olympics. Egypt's Islam El Shehaby quit the sport at the 2016 edition in Rio after shunning the opportunity to shake hands with his victorious Israeli rival.

The IJF handed Iran a four-year suspension earlier this year after ex-world champion Saeid Mollaei claimed he was ordered to lose a semi-final match at the 2019 World Championships in order to ensure he did not face an Israeli in the final.

Nourine chose to withdraw from the same tournament rather than meet Butbul.

Second judoka quits Tokyo Olympics before facing Israeli opponent who Algerian refused to meet over Palestine conflict
https://www.rt.com/sport/530232-israel-palestine-tokyo-olympics-judo-withdrawal/

Sudanese judoka Mohamed Abdalrasool weighed in but did not appear for his clash with Tohar Butbal in the round of 32 at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday, leaving the Israeli without an opponent again after Fethi Nourine was sent home.

Algerian Nourine drew praise and criticism after refusing to take on Butbal, explaining that "the Palestinian cause is bigger than all of this" before being suspended by the International Judo Foundation (IJF).

The federation has not immediately declared why Abdalrasool did not participate, and the Guardian said that the governing body and Sudanese Olympic officials had not provided an immediate comment on the situation.

Abdalrasool, who has a 73kg world ranking of 469, would have been a sizeable underdog against seventh-ranked Butbul, who also saw Nourine quit a bout against him at the 2019 world championships.

Abdalrasool was due to meet Butbal as a result of Nourine's premature exit. "Sudanese athletes also won't face Israelis," speculated one sports writer.

Despite the nature of Abdalrasool's withdrawal being unclear, he was swiftly savaged by some on social media, with Nourine also copping fury.

https://twitter.com/yesh222/status/1419508517501906945?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1419508517501906945%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rt.com%2Fsport%2F530232-israel-palestine-tokyo-olympics-judo-withdrawal%2F

"Fethi Nourine and Mohamed Abdalrasool should be banned for life in every Judo association," said one angry respondent. "Such blatant anti-semitism has no place in sports and should be severely punished."

Others described Abdalrasool as "another coward", with one writing: "I want to say that I can't believe they hate Israel so much that they're willing to ruin their entire career over competing fairly with an Israeli athlete, but anti-semitism is just like that, isn't it?"

In a statement, the IJF said it had taken its decision to punish Nourine because it would not tolerate "discrimination" and wanted to foster the "respect and friendship" at the heart of its moral code.

Nourine said he had been motivated by a desire not to "get his hands dirty", while his coach insisted the decision to pull out had been the right one.
