NEWARK, N.J. - The mayors of two New Jersey cities and a state legislator were arrested Thursday in connection with a major corruption and international money-laundering conspiracy probe.

Among the approximately 30 people arrested were Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, who took office 23 days ago, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, state Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt and Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark.

Federal prosecutors say several rabbis in New York and New Jersey also were arrested.

FBI and IRS agents were making the roundups in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in state history, according to NBC affiliate WNBC.

An FBI spokesman told WNBC that the investigation involved a "high-volume international money-laundering conspiracy."

The probe is said to have been launched when money transfers drew the interests of federal investigators.

WNBC reported that Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini and Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega were also taken into custody.

A news conference is scheduled for noon at the U.S. attorney's office in Newark.

In recent years, New Jersey has seen more than 130 corruption-related convictions of public officials.

Earlier this month, prosecutors alleged that Assemblyman Joseph Vas, a former Perth Amboy mayor, engaged in a scheme with a political adviser to funnel money through people who were given funds to make contributions.

Vas had previously been accused of using his political influence to further a real estate deal that netted him nearly $300,000.

Looks like another "ho-hum" corruption story out of Jersey. "Move along folks, nothing to see here!" The most important story on Drudge today is the tiff that is devolping between the "racist cop" and Obama.

NEWARK -- A New Jersey assemblyman and the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus were among public officials arrested this morning by FBI agents in an international money laundering and corruption probe that includes rabbis in the Syrian Jewish communities of Deal and Brooklyn.

Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt (R-Ocean), Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell and Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega are among those already brought to the FBI building in Newark. Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini has also been arrested.

A total of 30 people have been taken into custody, officials said.

The arrests are the result of a two-year FBI and IRS probe that began with an investigation of money transfers by members of the Syrian enclaves in Deal and Brooklyn. Those arrested this morning include key religious leaders in the tight-knit, wealthy communities.

The federal investigation then expanded into a public corruption probe.

No indictments have been released, though court appearances are expected later today in U.S. District Court in Newark. Nearly 20 people have already been led into the FBI building in Newark as the sweep continues to unfold in two states.

Agents also raided religious institutions to make arrests and collect information.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the IRS took out at least three boxes from the Deal Yeshiva, as students were arriving at school. The Deal Yeshiva, on the corner of Brighton and Norwood avenues, is a prestigious religious school in town.

Authorities also searched the Ohel Yaacob synagogue on Ocean Avenue in Deal and removed several boxes.

Assemblyman Van Pelt, 44, is also the mayor of Ocean Township, a post he has held since 1988. He holds degrees from The College of New Jersey (Criminal Justice) and Regent University (Public Policy and Government).

Cammarano, 32, a Democrat, was elected mayor of Hoboken in June. He was elected Hoboken City Councilman-at-Large in 2005. According to his campaign website, Cammarano is an attorney at the law firm of Genova, Burns, & Vernoia, which has offices in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Cammarano previously worked as a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan in Jersey City. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey, as well as the bar associations for Hudson, Bergen and Essex Counties. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University.

Elwell, 64, has served for more than two decades as mayor and a member of the town council. Elwell and his council slate recently won victory in their contested Democratic June primary contests.

Elwell is the president of a family-owned trucking company. He is a former Secaucus Board of Education member and a decorated Vietnam combat veteran.

Abramavich is about 41, yet the Soviet Union fell apart and some industries were privatized, in the early 1990's.  how does someone like Abramovich, basically a kid in his mid-20's, manage to out-bid all the other businessmen and organized crime and retired KGB etc for the position of oligarch ?

Three New Jersey mayors, two state lawmakers, a deputy mayor and five rabbis were among 44 people charged Thursday in a two-track corruption and international money-laundering probe, the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey announced.

The investigation began as a probe into a money-laundering ring that allegedly trafficked in goods as diverse as human organs and fake designer handbags. Based on information from a cooperating witness, the probe then widened to government corruption when the witness approached public officials about bribes, the attorney's office said in a statement.

FBI and IRS agents arrested most of the suspects Thursday morning in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in New Jersey history.

"New Jersey's corruption problem is one of the worst, if not the worst, in the nation," said Ed Kahrer, who heads the FBI's white collar and public corruption investigation division. "Corruption is a cancer that is destroying the core values of this state."

At one point Thursday morning, cars were backed up four deep with suspects outside the FBI's Newark office. One agent slowly walked an elderly rabbi into the building.

Central to the investigation was the cooperating witness, an informant who was charged with bank fraud in 2006 and who posed undercover — including as a real estate developer hoping to build projects and win public contracts, according to documents in the case.

"This investigation has once again identified a corrupt network of public officials who were all too willing to take cash in exchange for promised official action," acting U.S. Attorney Ralph Marra said in a statement. "It seemed that everyone wanted a piece of the action."

The organ trafficking allegedly involved patients paying middlemen to find willing donors in Israel. Investigators allege that the suspects had donors and patients lie to hospitals by saying that they were related. Hospitals would do the operation unaware that cash payments were part of the deal.

The attorney's office said investigators made secret recordings of some of the defendants.

According to court documents, Cammarano met with the cooperating witness who said he was giving Cammarano's election campaign $5,000 and wanted to make sure he had his support with "some properties we're working on." Cammarano is quoted as responding, "I'll be there."

NBC affiliate WNBC reported the documents also show defendant Michael Schaffer, a commissioner with the North Hudson Utilities Authority, as saying he was told by Cammarano that "the way I operate politics, anybody who helps me, I help them. That's the way I operate. And if you're not there the first round, I don't need ya' the second round."

In another case, an undercover FBI agent and a cooperating witness allegedly spoke with defendant Issac Rosenbaum about procuring a liver for the undercover agent's sick uncle.

"Let me explain this to you," Rosenbaum allegedly said in the taped conversation. "It's illegal to buy. It's illegal to sell. They are going to investigate him [the donor], not you, not your uncle. He's going to speak to a social worker and a psychologist to find out why he is doing it ... and it is our job to prepare him."

Rosenbaum allegedly set the cost at $160,000 — half of it up front, according to court papers.

Two of the Rabbis involved, Mordchai Fish and his brother Albert Schwartz, also had conversations taped, according to court transcripts.

The story will not go viral. In the four days since the story broke out only a 300% increase in news stories covering the event. Placement of the News story is lower on the google page. Compare that with Harvard prof Henry Louis Gates story which has the pole position one week running on google. The Harvard story has -  7,400 news articles as of July 25th.
