Fifth-Generation War: Warfare versus the nonstate

By LTCOL STANTON S. COERR, USMCR (Marine Corps Gazette)

I would like to thank Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Bob Vokac, United States Army, for providing us with the following reference and synopsis. It is an article well worth reviewing from both planning system and military culture perspectives.

"The link is to an article by LtCol Stanton S. Coerr, USMCR, "Fifth-Generation War," featured in the Jan 2009 issue [pp. 63-69].

He makes a number of interesting points, particularly the point that 5GW will not have a centre of gravity, but will consist of followers who float freely around a belief or an idea - radical Islam as one example.

A well--stated, but certainly not a new idea, about the focus on military technology:

'The American focus on military technology, winning by killing, creates a fundamental problem: precisely the same technology that wins conventional wars loses unconventional ones.'"
