Hamdi

I wish I could tell you that Hamdi's story was singular or unusual in some way, but it isn't.  It's absolutely typical.  Hamdi is a young man, 18 years old, 17 when he was arrested.  The Israelis came to him in Bethlehem in the way they usually do in most arrests and hundreds of soldiers showed up to arrest on a young boy.  They came into the apartment and broke it up, dragged him off, threw him in the Jeep and took them to checkpoint, where they told the soldiers at the checkpoint, "This is the son of Hamad."

Now Hamad was his father.  And his father  and his uncle had been killed by the Israelis some months before.  On hearing this information, the soldiers proceeded to beat, Hamdi, the son, up one more time.  When he was taken to prison, he was bleeding from head to foot.  He couldn't even lay down for the pain in his back.  Hamdi is still in prison, as far as I know.

I asked his mother, while I was talking to her about her other children.  When she worried about them?  Well yes, of course.  There were three little boys in the room at the time.  Two were her sons.  They haven't been in prison yet.  And the third child was her nephew, and he hasn't been in prison yet either.  But his father is in prison.  So are her 2 brothers, or should I say one.  One brother had been released after 21 years in prison on no charges.  The other one has been in prison for eight years since the beginning of the Intifada.

As I say, I would like to tell you that this is an unusual story but this is a very typical story.
