"The problem is clear to anyone not blinded -- the Palestinians and Arabs haven't accepted the reality of Israel's existence as a Jewish state. When someone wants to kill you, you have to defend yourselves. Some people do not accept Israel's right to self-defense. Well a pox on them ... You cannot give up territory to those who would kill you."

Nadler: Israel Has No Choice but to Push Back Against Her Terrorist Enemies

Quote"Hezbollah's cold-blooded, unprovoked attacks are a vivid illustration of the ongoing danger that Israel faces from the terrorist regimes that surround it.  Like any other country, Israel has the right and the obligation to defend her citizens from attack no matter what the circumstance.

In this case, Israel has fallen victim to violent, premeditated attacks launched for political gain.  At a press conference in Beirut yesterday, Hezbollah's leader bragged that the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers had been in the works for five months, and was intended to force Israel's hand in releasing convicted and suspected terrorists from prison.

Israel will not bow to brutality, nor should she be expected to do so.  Her only option is to move swiftly and judiciously to neutralize the terrorist elements carrying out these attacks.

While the clash we are seeing today is the work of Hezbollah extremists, it is also the product of years of inaction by the Lebanese government.  Israeli forces pulled out of southern Lebanon six years ago on the condition that Lebanon would prevent the borderland from being used to stage attacks against Israel.  The failure of that promise is self-evident.  The United Nations has passed a resolution calling for Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah.  Lebanon has not acted.  More action by Israel will most certainly be a consequence if Lebanon does not immediately become a partner in the effort to combat terrorism.

Israel continues to show admirable restraint in dealing with her hostile neighbors, even in the face of increasing rocket attacks, kidnappings, and threats to her people.  I support her actions in defense of her people, and I pray for a swift and just conclusion to the fighting."

QuoteNadler: America and Israel have a special relationship that goes back to the time when President Harry Truman made the United States the first nation to recognize Israel as a Jewish state in 1948. As the only democracy in the region, Israel stands not only as a critically important home for the Jewish people, but also as an invaluable strategic ally for the United States. Jerry is a leading pro-Israel voice in Congress, working towards a safe, secure, and prosperous Israel, and he has been strongly supportive of all efforts in Congress to strengthen US-Israel ties. Jerry - a frequent visitor to Israel - was a block away from the tragic bus bombing in Jerusalem in February 2004 and has seen, first hand, the type of violence that ravages the region everyday. Finding a peaceful, two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is of utmost importance. Yet, time and again, when offered the chance at a real and substantial peace, the Palestinian leadership has failed its people by walking away from the bargaining table and promoting violence and terrorism. The United States has an important and unique role to play in the peace process. If the Palestinian Authority ever shows a real and genuine commitment to cracking down on terror so that negotiations can resume, the United States, having the trust of both sides, should be in the position of mediating at the negotiating table. If there are ever to be real negotiations and a successful peace agreement, the United States can show no equivocation in its support of Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state and to her unqualified right to defend herself against Hamas, Hezbollah, and other terrorist groups. While Israel and her neighbors struggle to find peace, there is a disturbing trend of growing anti-Semitism around the world. This blind and irrational hatred of the Jewish people rears its ugly head not only in Arab nations that do not support Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, but in other countries as well, particularly in parts of Europe, and even here at home. As the United States continues to try to foster peace in the Middle East, it is vitally important that we do all we can to eradicate the scourge of anti-Semitism around the world. Jerry: Is a lifelong activist on issues of concern to the Jewish community through leadership in such organizations as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Congress, B'nai Zion, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Was a leading critic of the anti-Semitic slander that occurred at the UN Conference on Racism in Durban. Following reports that some of the Ford Foundation's money went to groups that engaged in inappropriate behavior in Durban, Jerry led a successful effort that led to Ford increasing its oversight of its grantees and changing its grant agreements to prohibit funding of groups that are openly hostile to Israel and Jews. Jerry's efforts were supported by a wide array of Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, Jewish Council on Public Affairs, Hadassah, and B'nai Brith International. Drafted a resolution calling on the United Nations to recognize the 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries. The resolution also calls on the United States to offer language to insure that any United Nations resolution discussing restitution to Palestinian refugees also provides for identical restitution to Jewish refugees. Offered an amendment that would limit funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) until it begins to resettle the Palestinian refugees (instead of keeping them cooped up in refugee camps that have become breeding grounds for terrorism against Israel), and until it eliminates school texts that promote anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel and the U.S. The amendment was supported by the World Jewish Congress. Led a Congressional sign-on letter to President Bush urging the United States to continue its presence in the Sinai desert. Due to Jerry's efforts, the United States continues to keep a small, but vital, military presence in the Sinai to deter any military action by Egypt should the situation in the Middle East deteriorate. Is an active and vocal supporter of both the Syria Accountability Act, and an amendment that would prohibit Saudi Arabia from obtaining any aid from the United States, as long as Saudi Arabia continues to harbor and fund terrorists that threaten Israel and the United States. Led an effort to urge the Bush Administration to withhold all military funding from Egypt until it would guarantee that a series based on the blatantly anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" would not be aired by government-sponsored television. Filed a lawsuit, Nadler v. Reno, in conjunction with Holocaust Survivors and Friends in Pursuit of Justice, which sought an order prohibiting the U.S. Attorney General from allowing re-entry into the country of John Demjanjuk, a convicted Nazi war criminal. Is an outspoken and longtime critic and fighter against the Arab boycott of Israel and of US companies that participated in the boycott. Did extensive work with the families of Gidone Busch and Yankel Rosenbaum to help ensure appropriate action on the part of the US Justice Department and local law enforcement. Called on New York State to examine its compulsory education laws to mandate tolerance training following reports of anti-Semitic indoctrination in some Muslim schools in Brooklyn. Consistently and strongly supports foreign aid for Israel. He has continuously worked with the Foreign Affairs appropriators to ensure that Israel receives the necessary support from the United States. Visited Israel many times, and has met with Prime Ministers Sharon, Barak, Netanyahu, Peres, Rabin, and with key government ministers and members of the Knesset.

Nadler Lauds Passage of Hate Crimes Legislation in Defense Bill

 October 8, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), a conferee on H. R. 2647, the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2010, cheered the passage of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which was included in the Defense bill, while registering his strong reservations on the military commissions provision also included. Nadler has long backed the hate crimes legislation and, both today and on Tuesday night, spoke on the House floor in its defense, helping Democrats defeat Republican efforts to remove that provision from the Defense bill. With hate crime incidence increasing nationwide, this legislation will expand the resources of state and local law enforcement to investigate and prosecute crimes of violence committed against individuals on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

House passes hate crimes bill, just one hurdle left

Could it really be that Congress is on the verge of passing a new hate crimes law Jewish groups like the Anti-Defamation League have been pushing for years?  Today's House passage of the Defense Authorization Conference Report means there's just one more hurdle: a Senate vote, which could come as early as next week.

Earlier, House members rejected efforts to yank the hate crimes statute – now the "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Prevention Act"  -  from the bill, setting the stage for today's vote on the overall package.

Egypt until it takes action against antisemitic incitement in the state-controlled media."
