Seven Years Behind Bars: Anniversary of Ernst Zundel's Arrest

To all –

Allegedly, in just a few weeks, on March 1, 2010, Europe's best-known political prisoner and my husband, Ernst Zundel, is scheduled to be released from prison.  In an emotional telephone conversation with him yesterday, he told me that he is entering the most dangerous phase of his life yet – that the "restrictions" on him will be "Draconian."  I leave it up to you to read into that what you will.

For one, we take it for granted that, at the very least, he will not be allowed a passport, which means he cannot travel anywhere outside the largely Zionist-controlled EU.  Since I cannot join him for various reasons, private and political, this means that for the time being, our marriage will have to be "on hold."

This morning I was sent an excellent, a bit outdated summary of what the Zundel Struggle is really all about.  Even though I dislike just being sent a link, in this case I will make an exception and send you one because this article is well-written and graphically beautifully organized and lends itself to hard copy and cyber reproduction.  Please post it far and wide.

Holocaust denier slated to be freed in Germany

BERLIN - Ernst Zundel, the far-right activist deported from Canada in 2005, will soon be released from prison after serving his five-year sentence for denying the Holocaust, a German prosecutor said Wednesday.

Mannheim prosecutor Andreas Grossmann said Zundel, 70, will be released March 1 after receiving credit for time served ahead of his 2007 trial.

He was convicted in February 2007 of 14 counts of inciting hatred for years of anti-Semitic activities, including contributing to a website devoted to denying the Holocaust - a crime in Germany.

Prosecutors were able to bring charges in Germany because the website was accessible there. Zundel, who also has lived in Tennessee, and his supporters had argued he was exercising his right to free speech.

Zundel is a German citizen so he can go wherever he wants in the country following his release, Grossmann said, adding that he has relatives in the Stuttgart area.

Zundel, author of "The Hitler We Loved and Why," was deported from Canada in 2005 after a lengthy fight.
   

Grossmann said he understood that Zundel is banned by the United States and Canada from returning to those countries.

Zundel's wife, Ingrid Zundel, told The Associated Press in an email that he was not technically barred from North America but that they "expect huge diplomatic barriers to keep him inside Germany where freedom of speech simply doesn't exist."

Lawyer Peter Lindsay, who represented Zundel at the hearings in Canada, said Zundel is technically barred from the country.

"He was subject to a security certificate in Canada and he was deported after being found to be a danger to national security in 2005, so he can't come back to Canada," he said.

Ingrid Zundel said she has been in regular contact with her husband and that he fears for his life upon his release, because he is "ferociously hated" by many for his writings about the Holocaust.

"We fear that, at the very least, he will be re-arrested on flimsiest pretence and put back into prison for life," she said.

However, she told The Canadian Press in an email that her husband intends to obey German laws after his release, because he has said all there is to say.

"What else could he possibly add?" Ingrid Zundel wrote.

"As long as he lives in Germany, even if he is free, he will obey the laws of Germany. That does not mean he agrees with them."

"My guess is he would like to live a normal life and get back to what he likes best - doing his beautiful paintings."

Born in Germany in 1939, Zundel emigrated to Canada in 1958 and lived in Toronto and Montreal until 2001. Canadian officials twice rejected his attempts to obtain Canadian citizenship, and he moved to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., until being deported to Canada in 2003 for alleged immigration violations.

In February 2005, Federal Court of Canada Justice Pierre Blais ruled that Zundel's activities were not only a threat to national security, but "the international community of nations" as well, clearing the way for his deportation to Germany.

Blais found Zundel to be a hate-monger who posed a threat to national security because of his close association with white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups that had resorted to violence to press their political and social causes.


Zundel's lawyer at the time said he was treated unfairly by the Canadian legal system but that no one was interested in protecting the rights of unpopular people.

Zundel spent the last two years of his time in Canada in solitary confinement in a Toronto jail under anti-terrorism legislation. Despite his long stay in Canada, he was not able to convert his landed immigrant status into citizenship.

Since his arrest, Ingrid Zundel - who has remained in the United States - said she has been running his website, so she cannot risk being present when her husband is released.

"I would be risking immediate arrest if I stepped on German soil," she said.

This morning at 2:45 EST I received a phone call from our British friend, Lady Michele Renouf, who told me:  "We have him in the car!  All is well!  Here he is..."  and I could exchange a few happy words with my husband.

Ernst assured me that his release went smoothly and that he would call me a bit later with additional details.

Half an hour later I received a fax from his lady attorney, Alexandra Rittershaus, who told me:

"Ernst is in freedom.  A few people were [at the prison gates], but everything went peacefully.  I did not have an opportunity to talk to him, but he looked happy."

Below is a photo taken just a few minutes ago, showing Ernst with his splendid Austrian defense attorney, Dr. Herbert Schaller who, at the young age of 87, fought like a lion for Ernst's release!

I will send a more detailed description later in the day, provided there won't be any Internet censorship or enemy interference, as has happened off and on these past few weeks.

First-hand, I am happy to report that Ernst Zündel emerged from prison on March 1st not in the least a "stooped" man!  Quite the contrary.  He emerged smiling and upright in stance (and statements) though burdened by bouquets (see pic attached).  

Ernst stepped straight up, warmly confident, to greet each and every friend who had turned up at Mannheim Prison's gate to express their gratitude for his role-model "unbowed" fibre.  As we drove this eagle-eyed owl to his Black Forest ancestral lair, he keenly declared (on film) that:

 "they used to have a critic; now they have an enemy".

Open Letter to Just Released Political Prisoner, Ernst Zundel

Lieber Ernst:

First, hearty congratulations on being released yesterday as a
political prisoner incarcerated by what you so rightly call the
German "vassal state." The soulless descendants of men whose boots
they are not fit to even lick extracted the full term of their 5-year
sentence imposed upon  you for being a heretic.

It is almost five years to the day since I was called to the Metro
West Detention Centre where you had been kept in solitary confinement
for 25 months - confinement usually reserved for the most dangerous
of criminals. This treatment was what one might expect from the sorry
hypocritical Canadian state that loves to wag its finger and preach
human rights but is as comfortable as its Red Chinese pals in jailing
dissenters or gagging the Internet. In some ways, though, Ernst, your
ideas, your dissent from the new religion of holocaust, was more
dangerous to our political establishment and the minority puppeteers
than the activities of a gunman, rapist, or armed robber.

JB and I went around to the prison to collect boxes of your
correspondence reflecting the hundreds of devoted people around the
globe who had written to you to support and encourage you in prison.

We learned that you had been sneaked on a private jet - which
government paid for that ? - surreptitiously ("security" reasons, you
know) - to be sent back to Germany to face charges for Internet
postings legally made in North America. The extraterritorial claim of
jurisdiction, of course, didn't trouble Canada's highly politicized
courts and they had blithely consigned you to a kangaroo trial and
certain jail in Germany.

So, Ernst, we go back a long time. The Canadian Association for Free
Expression did its modest part to help publicize your various cases
going back to 1985 and the ludicrous "false news" charges for which
you were twice prosecuted. Later we joined as an intervenor in the
Canadian Human Rights Commissions' Sec. 13 "Internet" hate charges, a
case that went on from 1996 to 2002.

In today's TORONTO SUN (March 2, 2010), Mark Bonokoski, unable to act
as anything from a hate-spewing voice for his ethnic group's lobby
called you a "rat." The headline reported on the Canadian Jewish
Congress website charged: "Rat let out of his cage." Years ago, we
called you the "Galileo of Revisionism." A rat is vicious and
secretive. You have always been friendly and up front in the 70s and
80s in your defence of the rights of German parents not to have their
ethnic group defamed and vilified in schools, and later in your
skepticism about the new state religion of holocaust.

Ultimately, you were punished, not because the facts and research you
adduced to question the claims and assertions of the new religion
were false, but because you had questioned at all. Many, probably you
included, felt that the extravagant claims of German wrongdoing - the
vehemence of which increased with each year as WW II receded into
history - were matters of historical or scientific facts misreported
or wrong. You sought to shed the light of research and statistics on
these claims That was not allowed. One is not allowed to question or
discuss what is called "the holocaust" because it is not a historical
event. It is a religion, a religion that has all but become the state
religion in most of what was once called "the Free World." You were
not punished because you got the facts wrong - you didn't. You were
punished because you were a heretic, because you refused to say that
Ooga Booga, he with three purple horns, lived up on top of the
mountain, was god and should be adored.

Thus, like  Galileo, you refused to assent to foolish superstition or
state imposed belief and sought to see what facts, eyewitnesses and
forensics had to tell us of the events of WW II.

We honour you and rejoice in your release from prison and pray and
strive for the day when you enjoy real freedom and we in Canada and
even more your countrymen in super repressive Germany enjoy freedom
of thought and freedom of expression which are our rights. -
