Swiss deny U.S. request to extradite Roman Polanski

The Swiss government has rejected a request from the United States to extradite the renowned film director Roman Polanski back to the U.S. for a 1977 charge against him for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. According to the Associated Press, the Swiss blamed U.S. authorities for failing to provide confidential testimony about Polanski's sentencing procedure in 1977-1978.

The now 76-year-old Polanski was arrested on September 26 when he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival there, and since December he has been under house arrest in the Swiss town of Gstaad.

''The freedom-restricting measures against him have been revoked,'' said Switzerland's Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf. ''Mr. Polanski can now move freely. Since 12:30 today he's a free man,'' she explained.

After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. In 1914, these same banks bought the controlling number of shares in the newly organized Federal Reserve Bank of New York, paying for the stock with the Czar\'s sequestered funds. In November 1917,  Red Guards drove a truck to the Imperial Bank and removed the Romanoff gold and jewels. The gold was later shipped directly to Kuhn, Loeb Co. in New York.-- Curse of Canaan
