Rituals of Freemasonry
Freemasonry Proven To Worship Lucifer

Once you understand what is going on in the world you can then recognize evidences of Satanism in so many, many places.

THE PENTAGRAM

It was proven from Masonic books that Masons worship both Lucifer and Satan. They serve both the "good" Lucifer and the "evil" Satan. They believe that both good and evil exist in equal measure in the world.

They also believe good cannot exist without an equally powerful evil.

This belief is the reason we see both type of 5-pointed stars within Masonry; the star with the upright single point is a symbol of the "good" Lucifer, while the star with the two points upward is a symbol of the "evil" Satan. It also takes 33 degrees of rotation of a pentagram (one point up) to achieve a Satanic pentagram (two points up).

Coincidence?

I don't think so.

The women's division of Freemasonry, Eastern Star (above right) is based upon the "evil Satan" Star, the Goats Head of Mendes. This is one of the Infernal Names of Satan within Satanism.

In looking at the Eastern Star Goatshead (above right), the star itself is a Goatshead, and the star in the middle is a plain Goatshead, which is within an inverted pentacle. In one symbol there are three instances of inverted pentagrams.

So, just how important is the Pentagram to the Satanist? Listen to the Witch of Salem, Massachusetts, Laura Cabot, on this question. In her book, Power of the Witch: The Earth, the Moon, and the Magical Path to Enlightenment, Cabot says,

"It really isn't that difficult to distinguish the Craft from Satanism. Witches wear the pentacle with the point up. Satanists reverse it with the point down ..."

Once we examine the two symbols above, both Masonic, we can only conclude that Freemasonry admittedly serves both the "good Lucifer" and the "evil Satan!"

Cabot has more to say on page 93, about the significance of the Pentagram to witchcraft.

"It [Pentagram] consists of a five-pointed star inside a circle. It is the key symbol of the Craft. It is the witch's Mandala ...."

The Pentagram, inside a circle or with no circle, is the key symbol of witchcraft. Both "good" and "evil" pentagrams are within Freemasonry in abundance.

THE TRIANGLE

The Triangle wasn't the first subject mentioned on this page because the Pentagram is far more important to their practice of Witchcraft.

The triangle is part and parcel of the Pentagram. The triangle plays a big part within the Hexagram as well.

FREEMASONRY TEACHES MAN IS BECOMING GOD

To the occultist, the triangle is very important. It is used constantly in every conceivable manner. It is used either with the point up or down.

When you see the point down, this represents the Deity and is called the Deity's Triangle or the Water Triangle.

The Earthly Triangle or Pyramid Triangle is what it is called when one point is up. It "symbolizes the PERFECT OR DIVINE MAN." This quote is not from some heinous Black-hooded Satanist, it comes from a 33rd Degree Masonic author named George Steinmetz [Freemasonry: Its Hidden Meaning , New York, Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Company, 1948, p. 63, repeated on p. 67]

Freemasonry joins all pagan groups in saying that man can become "divine" or "perfect." In another book, George returns to this theme once again:

"Be still -- and know -- that I am God ... That I AM GOD -- the final recognition of the All in All, the unity of the Self with the Cosmos -- the cognition of the DIVINITY OF THE SELF!"

[George H. Steinmetz, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry, Richmond, Virginia, Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Company, 1923, p. 92]

Freemasonry has been so sensitive about any of its secrets ever becoming public knowledge. Masons in every age knew that if the general public knew the Satanic core that existed in the heart of Freemasonry, the organization would either go into oblivion or would be arrested and put in jail. Now you know why Freemasonry insists that its Initiates pledge that, if they divulge any of Masonry's secrets, he would agree to having his throat slit and be disemboweled.

Manly P. Hall, another 33rd Degree Mason, writes,

Quote"Man is a God in the making ..."

[The Lost Keys of Freemasonry, p. 92]

Masonic author, Joseph Fort Newton, clearly and boldly states,
Quote".. to the profoundest insight of the human soul -- that God becomes man that man may become God."

[The Religion of Freemasonry: An Interpretation, Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Company, 1969, p. 37]

MASONRY ACKNOWLEDGES THAT FREEMASONRY ORIGINATED IN THE PLACE WHERE SATAN DWELLS!

Albert Churchward, another Masonic author states that the triangle pointing upward us a symbol for Set, which is one of the Infernal Names for Satan. [Signs and Symbols of Primordial Man , George Allen and Company, Ltd., 1913, p. 189, 309, and 471]. Then, Masonic author, J.S.M. Ward states,

Quote"With the point upwards, the equilateral triangle stands for Shiva the Destroyer and signifies the flame which rises upwards from the funeral pyre toward Heaven. This symbol is familiar to us in several degrees, most notably the Thirtieth degree."

[Freemasonry and the Ancient Gods, 1921; also reported by Masonic authors William Meyer, The Order of the Eastern Star, p. 20; Alain Danielou, The Gods of India]

Shiva is another name for Satan in the occult. The triangle with one point pointing up is a symbol for Satan. Most likely this is the reason why the pyramid is such an important symbol to the Mason. This is the symbol on the reverse of the one dollar bill. This symbol contains two triangles: the Pyramid itself and the All-Seeing Eye of Horus (Osiris).

Occultists know that both Horus and Osiris are alternate names for Satan. There is one more proof from Masonic authors, that Satan is the one they worship.

Masonic authors tell us that they worship Lucifer in yet another way. Lynn Perkins (a Masonic Author), states that
Quote"Shamballa has a bearing on the ancient origins of Freemasonry and upon its future in the coming Aquarian Age ..."

[Masonry In The New Age, p. 56]

Then, on pages 55-56, Perkins says that today's Mason has no idea that Freemasonry comes from such an ancient, esoteric source. Most Masons today understand that the roots of their organization are in Satanism. When Perkins said that Freemasonry had its origins in Shamballa, he just identified Masonry as Satanic.

Alice Bailey, with her Demon Master - Master D.K. - writing through her, stated that
Quote"Shamballa is the mythological place where the 'Lord of the World', Sanat Kumara, or Shiva , is supposed to live."
[Discipleship in the New Age].

Masonic author, Perkins, has just admitted that Freemasonry originated in the place where Shiva (Satan) lives.

Manly P. Hall, 33rd Degree Mason, K.T., in his book, Initiates of the Flame boldly admits Freemasonry is from Hell:

Quote"Those who follow the path of faith (or the heart) use water and are known as the Sons of Seth, while those who follow the path of the mind and action are the Sons of Cain, who was the son of SAMAEL , the Spirit of Fire. Today, we find the latter among the alchemists, the Hermetic philosophers, the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons."
[p. 20]

Hall places Freemasonry among the circle of the damned -- Sons of Cain , who rebelled against God; alchemists who are known sorcerers, Black Magicians, and worshippers of Satan, and the Rosicrucians who have so desecrated the precious cross of Jesus Christ with Pentagrams and Hexagrams as to make you sick.

Hall's major revelation was that Freemasonry is the son of SAMAEL. being careful not to confuse Samael with the beloved prophet Samuel. SAMAEL is one of the Infernal Names of Satan. In fact, House of Theosophy author, writing under the influence of her demon possessing her -- Master D.K. -- identifies SAMAEL as Satan! [The Secret Doctrine] In fact, Satanists have a symbol of SAMAEL.

The pentagram on the left with the one point up represents the Divine Man specifically and Lucifer the good god generally; the pentagram on the right with two stars up and the goats head is called the Goats Head of Mendes by most Satanists, but Black Magick Satanists call him SAMAEL.

The Merkabah

Merkabah (Hebrew: מֶרְכַּבְ ,מרכבה, and מִרְכֶּבֶת "chariot", derived from the consonantal root r-k-b with general meaning "to ride") is the throne-chariot of God, the four-wheeled vehicle driven by four "chayot" (Hebrew: "living creatures"), each of which has four wings[1] and the four faces of a man, lion, ox, and eagle. The word Merkabah is also found 44 times in the Old Testament[2] and though the concept of the Merkabah is associated with Ezekiel's vision (1:4-26), the word isn't explicitly written in Ezekiel 1.[3]

Several movements in Jewish mysticism, including the Ma'asei Merkavah of the late Hellenistic period following the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE,[dubious – discuss] and later, students of the Kabbalah, have focused on these passages from Ezekiel, seeking underlying meaning and the secrets of Creation in what they argued was the metaphoric language of the verses. Due to the concern of some Torah scholars that misunderstanding these passages as literal descriptions of God's image might lead to blasphemy and/or idolatry, there was great opposition to studying this topic without the proper initiation. Jewish biblical commentaries emphasize that the imagery of the Merkaba is not meant to be taken literally; rather the chariot and its accompanying angels are analogies for the various ways that God reveals Himself in this world.[4] Hasidic philosophy and Kabbalah discuss at length what each aspect of this vision represents in this world, and how the vision does not imply that God is made up of these forms. Jews customarily read the Biblical passages concerning the Merkaba in their synagogues every year on the holiday of Shavuot, and the Merkabah is also referenced in several places in traditional Jewish liturgy.

According to the verses in Ezekiel and its attendant commentaries, the analogy of the Merkaba image consists of a chariot made of many angels being driven by the "Likeness of a Man." Four angels form the basic structure of the chariot. These angels are called the "Chayot" חיות (lit. living creatures). The bodies of the "Chayot" are like that of a human being, but each of them has four faces, corresponding to the four directions the chariot can go (north, east south and west). The faces are that of a man, a lion, an ox (later changed to a cherub in Ezekiel 10:14) and an eagle. Since there are four angels and each has four faces, there are a total of sixteen faces. Each Chayot angel also has four wings. Two of these wings spread across the length of the chariot and connected with the wings of the angel on the other side. This created a sort of 'box' of wings that formed the perimeter of the chariot. With the remaining two wings, each angel covered its own body. Below, but not attached to the feet of the "Chayot" angels are other angels that are shaped like wheels. These wheel angels, which are described as "a wheel inside of a wheel", are called "Ophanim" אופנים (lit. wheels, cycles or ways). These wheels are not directly under the chariot, but are nearby and along its perimeter. The angel with the face of the man is always on the east side and looks up at the "Likeness of a Man" that drives the chariot. The "Likeness of a Man" sits on a throne made of sapphire.

(the "likeness of man" is also mentioned in other words in Revelation 1:13 -- CSR)

The Bible later makes mention of a third type of angel found in the Merkaba called "Seraphim" (lit. "burning") angels. These angels appear like flashes of fire continuously ascending and descending. These "Seraphim" angels powered the movement of the chariot. In the hierarchy of these angels, "Seraphim" are the highest, that is, closest to God, followed by the "Chayot", which are followed by the "Ophanim." The chariot is in a constant state of motion, and the energy behind this movement runs according to this hierarchy. The movement of the "Ophanim" is controlled by the "Chayot" while the movement of the "Chayot" is controlled by the "Seraphim". The movement of all the angels of the chariot are controlled by the "Likeness of a Man" on the Throne.

In Jewish commentary

The earliest Rabbinic merkabah commentaries were exegetical expositions of the prophetic visions of God in the heavens, and the divine retinue of angels, hosts, and heavenly creatures surrounding God. The earliest evidence suggests that merkabah homiletics did not give rise to ascent experiences - as one rabbinic sage states: "Many have expounded upon the merkabah without ever seeing it."[5]

One mention of the merkabah in the Talmud notes the importance of the passage: "A great issue—the account of the merkavah; a small issue—the discussions of Abaye and Rava [famous Talmudic sages]."[6] The sages Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai (d. ca. 80 CE) and later, Rabbi Akiva (d. 135) were deeply involved in merkabah exegesis. Rabbi Akiva and his contemporary Rabbi Ishmael ben Elisha are most often the protagonists of later merkabah ascent literature.

Prohibition against study

The Talmudic interdictions concerning merkabah speculation are numerous and widely held. Discussions concerning the merkabah were limited to only the most worthy sages, and admonitory legends are preserved about the dangers of overzealous speculation concerning the merkabah.

For example, the secret doctrines might not be discussed in public: "Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee, neither search the things that are above thy strength. But what is commanded thee, think thereupon with reverence; for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret."[7] It must be studied only by exemplary scholars: "Ma'aseh Bereshit must not be explained before two, nor Ma'aseh Merkabah before one, unless he be wise and understands it by himself,"[8] Further commentary notes that the chapter-headings of Ma'aseh Merkabah may be taught, as was done by R. Ḥiyya. According to Yer. Ḥag. ii. 1, the teacher read the headings of the chapters, after which, subject to the approval of the teacher, the pupil read to the end of the chapter,[9] although Rabbi Zera said that even the chapter-headings might be communicated only to a person who was head of a school and was cautious in temperament.

According to R. Ammi, the secret doctrine might be entrusted only to one who possessed the five qualities enumerated in Isaiah iii. 3 (being experienced in any of five different professions requiring good judgement), and a certain age is, of course, necessary. When R. Johanan wished to initiate R. Eliezer in the Ma'aseh Merkabah, the latter answered, "I am not yet old enough." A boy who recognized the meaning of (Ezek. i. 4) was consumed by fire (Ḥag. 13b), and the perils connected with the unauthorized discussion of these subjects are often described (Ḥag. ii. 1; Shab. 80b).

Further analysis

Beyond the rabbinic community, Jewish apocalyptists also engaged in visionary exegeses concerning the divine realm and the divine creatures which are remarkably similar to the rabbinic material. A small number of texts unearthed at Qumran indicate that the Dead Sea community also engaged in merkabah exegesis. Recently uncovered Jewish mystical texts also evidence a deep affinity with the rabbinic merkabah homilies.

The merkabah homilies eventually consisted of detailed descriptions of multiple layered heavens (usually seven in number), often guarded over by angels, and encircled by flames and lightning. The highest heaven contains seven palaces (hekhalot), and in the innermost palace resides a supreme divine image (God's Glory or an angelic image) seated on a throne, surrounded by awesome hosts who sing God's praise.

When these images were combined with an actual mystical experiential motif of individual ascent (paradoxically called "descent" in most texts) and union is not precisely known. By inference, contemporary historians of Jewish mysticism usually date this development to the third century CE. Again, there is a significant dispute amongst historians over whether these ascent and unitive themes were the result of some "foreign," usually Gnostic, influence, or a natural progression of religious dynamics within rabbinic Judaism.[citation needed]
[edit] Maimonides

Maimonides' 12th Century work, Guide for the Perplexed is in part intended as an explanation of the passages Ma'aseh Bereshit and Ma'aseh Merkabah. In the third volume, Maimonides commences the exposition of the mystical passage of the mystic doctrines found in the merkavah passages, while justifying this "crossing of the line" from hints to direct instruction. Maimonides explains basic mystical concepts via the Biblical terms referring to Spheres, elements and Intelligences. In these chapters, however, there is still very little in terms of direct explanation.[10]

We have frequently mentioned in this treatise the principle of our Sages " not to discuss the Maaseh Mercabhah even in the presence of one pupil, except he be wise and intelligent; and then only the headings of the chapters are to be given to him." We must, therefore, begin with teaching these subjects according to the capacity of the pupil, and on two conditions, first, that he be wise, i.e., that he should have successfully gone through the preliminary studies, and secondly that he be intelligent, talented, clear-headed, and of quick perception, that is, " have a mind of his own", as our Sages termed it. Guide for the Perplexed, ch.XXXIII

A Hasidic explanation

Hasidic philosophy explains that the Merkaba is a multi-layered analogy that offers insight into the nature of man, the ecosystem, the world and teaches us how to become better people.

The four Chayot angels represent the basic archetypes that God used to create the current nature of the world. Ophanim, which means "ways", are the ways these archetypes combine to create actual entities that exist in the world. For instance, in the basic elements of the world, the lion represents fire, the ox/earth, the man/water, and the eagle/air. However, in practice, everything in the world is some combination of all four, and the particular combination of each element that exist in each thing are its particular Ophanim or ways. In another example, the four Chayot represent spring, summer, winter and autumn/fall.[citation needed] These four types of weather are the archetypal forms. The Ophanim would be the combination of weather that exists on a particular day, which may be a winter-like day within the summer or a summer like day within the winter.

The Man on the throne represents God, who is controlling everything that goes on in the world, and how all of the archetypes He set up should interact. The Man on the throne, however, can only drive when the four angels connect their wings. This means that God will not be revealed to us by us looking at all four elements (for instance) as separate and independent entities. However, when one looks at the way that earth, wind, fire and water (for instance) which all oppose each other are able to work together and coexist in complete harmony in the world, this shows that there is really a higher power (God) telling these elements how to act.

This very lesson carries over to explain how the four basic groups of animals and the four basic archetypal philosophies and personalities reveal a higher, godly source when one is able to read between the lines and see how these opposing forces can and do interact in harmony. A person should strive to be like a Merkaba, that is to say, he should realize all the different qualities, talents and inclinations he has (his angels). They may seem to contradict, but when one directs his life to a higher goal such as doing God's will (the man on the chair driving the chariot) he will see how they all can work together and even complement each other. Ultimately, we should strive to realize how all of the forces in the world, though they may seem to conflict can unite when one knows how to use them all to fulfill a higher purpose, namely to serve God.

Ma'asei Merkavah

Ma'asei Merkavah, the first distinctly mystical movement in Jewish history, appeared in the late Hellenistic period, after the end of the Second Temple period following the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E.[dubious – discuss] It is a form of pre-Kabbalah Jewish mysticism, that teaches both of the possibility of making a sublime journey to God and of the ability of man to draw down divine powers to earth; it seems to be an esoteric movement that grew out of the priestly mysticism already evident in the Dead Sea Scrolls and some apocalyptic writings (see the studies by Rachel Elior).[11] Hekhalot writings are the literary artifacts of the Maasei Merkavah.

Merkava/Hekhalot mysticism began after the end of the Second Temple period following the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E.,[dubious – discuss] when the physical cult ceased to function. The idea of making a journey to the heavenly "hekhal" seems to be a kind of spiritualization of the pilgrimages to the earthly "hekhal" that were now no longer possible.

In medieval Judaism, the beginning of the book of Ezekiel was regarded as the most mystical passage in the Hebrew Bible, and its study was discouraged, except by mature individuals with an extensive grounding in the study of traditional Jewish texts.

Hekhalot

Hekhalot ("palaces/temples") writings are the literary artifacts of the Maasei Merkavah. The main interests of all hekhalot writings are accounts of mystical ascents into heaven, divine visions, and the summoning and control of angels, usually for the purpose of gaining insight into Torah. The locus classicus for these practices is the biblical accounts of the Chariot vision of Ezekiel (Chap. 1) and the Temple vision of Isaiah (Chap. 6). It is from these, and from the many extra-canonical apocalyptic writings of heavenly visitations, that hekhalot literature emerges. Still, it is distinctive from both Qumran literature and apocalyptic writings for several reasons, chief among them being that hekhalot literature is not at all interested in eschatology, largely ignores the unique status of the priesthood, has little interest in fallen angels or demonology, and it "democratizes" the possibility of divine ascent. It may represent a "rabbinization" of these earlier priestly ideologies.[citation needed]

The title "hekhalot" derives from the divine abodes seen by the practitioner following a long period of ritual purification, self-mortification, and ecstatic prayer and meditation. In their visions, these mystics would enter into the celestial realms and journey through the seven stages of mystical ascent: the Seven Heavens and seven throne rooms. Such a journey is fraught with great danger, and the adept must not only have made elaborate purification preparation, but must also know the proper incantations, seals and angelic names needed to get past the fierce angelic guards, as well as know how to navigate the various forces at work inside and outside the palaces.

The literature sometimes includes fantastic and baffling descriptions of the precincts of heaven and its awesome denizens. The highly literal and over-explicit images of heavenly objects and their numbers (...four thousands of thousand of fiery chariots and ten thousand fiery torches amidst them...) common to this literature may be intended,[by whom?][neutrality is disputed] by reductio ad absurdum, to convey the truly ineffable nature of the ecstatic experience. At times, heavenly interlocutors will reveal divine secrets. In some texts, the mystic's interest extends to the heavenly music and liturgy, usually connected with the angelic adorations mentioned in Isa. 6:3. The mantra-like repetitive nature of the liturgies recorded in many of these compositions seems meant to encourage further ascent. The ultimate goal of the ascent varies from text to text. In some cases, it seems to be a visionary glimpse of God, to "Behold the King in His Beauty." Others hint at "enthronement," that the adept be accepted among the angelic retinue of God and be given an honored (god-like?) seat. One text actually envisions the successful pilgrim getting to sit in God's "lap." Scholars such as Peter Schaefer and Elliot Wolfson see an erotic theology implied in this kind of image, though it must be said sexual motifs, while present in highly attenuated forms, are few and far between if one surveys the full scope of the literature.

Literary works related to the Hekhalot tradition that have survived in whole or in part include Hekhalot Rabbati (or Pirkei Hekhalot), Hekhalot Zutarti, 3rd Enoch (also known as Hebrew Enoch), and Ma'aseh Merkavah. In addition there are many smaller and fragmentary manuscripts that seem to belong to this genre, but their exact relationship to Ma'asei Merkavah mysticism and to each other is often not clear (Dennis, 2007, 199-120).

Key texts

The ascent texts are extant in four principal works, all redacted well after the third but certainly before the ninth century CE. They are: 1) Hekhalot Zutartey ("The Lesser Palaces"), which details an ascent of Rabbi Akiva; 2) Hekhalot Rabbati ("The Greater Palaces"), which details an ascent of Rabbi Ishmael; 3) Ma'aseh Merkabah ("Account of the Chariot"), a collection of hymns recited by the "descenders" and heard during their ascent; and 4) Sepher Hekhalot ("Book of Palaces," also known as 3 Enoch), which recounts an ascent and divine transformation of the biblical figure Enoch into the archangel Metatron, as related by Rabbi Ishmael.

A fifth work provides a detailed description of the Creator as seen by the "descenders" at the climax of their ascent. This work, preserved in various forms, is called Shi'ur Qomah ("Measurement of the Body"), and is rooted in a mystical exegesis of the Song of Songs, a book reputedly venerated by Rabbi Akiva. The literal message of the work was repulsive to those who maintained God's incorporeality; Maimonides (d. 1204) wrote that the book should be erased and all mention of its existence deleted.

While throughout the era of merkabah mysticism the problem of creation was not of paramount importance, the treatise Sefer Yetzirah ("Book of Creation") represents an attempted cosmogony from within a merkabah milieu. This text was probably composed during the seventh century, and evidence suggests Neoplatonic, Pythagoric, and Stoic influences. It features a linguistic theory of creation in which God creates the universe by combining the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, along with emanations represented by the ten numerals, or sefirot.

Heikhalot literature and "Four Entered Pardes"

Moshe Idel, Gershom Scholem, Joseph Dan, and others have raised the natural question concerning the relationship between the "chambers" portion of the Heichalot literature and the Bavli's treatment of "The Work of the Chariot" in the presentation and analysis of such in the Gemara to tractate Hagigah of the Mishna. This portion of the Babylonian Talmud, which includes the famous "four entered pardes" material, runs from 12b-iv (wherein the Gemara's treatment of the "Work of Creation" flows into and becomes its treatment of "The Work of the Chariot") to and into 16a-i. [All references are to the Art Scroll pagination.]

By making use of the Rabbinically paradigmatic figures of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ishmael in their writings, the generators of the Heikhalot literature, quite arguably, seem to be attempting to show some sort of connection between their writings and the Chariot/Throne study and practice of the Rabbinic Movement in the decades immediately following upon the destruction of the Temple. However, in both the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud the major players in this Chariot/Throne endeavor are, clearly, Rabbi Akiva and Elisha ben Abuyah who is referred to as "Akher." Neither Talmud presents Rabbi Ishmael as a player in Merkabah study and practice.

In the long study on these matters contained in " 'The Written' as the Vocation of Conceiving Jewishly" [McGinley, J W; 2006] the hypothesis is offered and defended that "Rabbi Ishmael ben Elisha" (more often, simply "Rabbi Ishmael") is in fact a Rabbinically sanctioned cognomen for Elisha ben Abuyah who, as is well known, apostatized from the Rabbinic Movement. The argument is that through this indirection Rabbinic offialdom was able to integrate into the Gemaric give and take of argumentation and analysis the huge body of halakhic and hermeneutical teachings of this great Torah scholar without, however, honoring his equally significant apostasy. To be sure, in the accounting of this figure's mystical study and practice the pejorative (in context) "Akher" is used instead of "Rabbi Ishmael." This is because Elisha ben Abuyah's teachings under the heading of "The Work of the Chariot" came to be considered heretical in contrast to his halakhic and hermeneutical teachings which were generally admired—and whose weighty influence, in any case, could not be ignored. All of this indicates that the generators of the Heikhalot literature were indeed savvy in choosing "Rabbi Ishmael" as paradigmatic in their own writings as a means of relating their own endeavors to the mystical study and practices of the tannaim in the early decades following upon the destruction of the Temple.

Both Akiva and the "Ishmaelic Akher" traded upon the "two-thrones"/"two-powers"-in-Heaven motif in their respective Merkabah-oriented undertakings. Akiva's version is memorialized in the Bavli Gemara to tractate Hagigah at 14a-ii wherein Akiva puts forth the pairing of Hashem and "David" in a messianic version of that mystical motif. Immediately after this Akivian "solution" to the puzzle of thrones referred to in Song of Songs and the two thrones spoken of in Daniel, Chapter Seven, the text presents Akiva as being pressured—and then acquiescing to—a domesticated version of this twoness theme for the single Jewish God which would be acceptable to Rabbinic officialdom. The text offers Justice [din] and Charity [tsadaqqa] as the middot of God which are enthroned in Heaven. [Again, 14a-ii] Akher's non-Messianic and Metatron-oriented version of this "two-thrones"/"two-powers"-in-Heaven motif is discussed at length in the entry "Paradigmatia" of the above-mentioned study. The generic point in all of this is that by the time of the final editing of the Mishna this whole motif (along with other dimensions of Merkabah-oriented study and practice) came to be severely discouraged by Rabbinic officialdom. Those who still pursued these kinds of things were marginalized by the Rabbinic Movement over the next several centuries becoming, in effect, a separate grouping responsible for the Heikhalot literature.

In the "four-entered-pardes" section of this portion of the Bavli Gemara on tractate Hagigah, it is the figure of Akiva who seems to be lionized. For of the four he is the only one presented who ascended and descended "whole." The other three were broken, one way or another: Ben Azzai dies soon after; Ben Zoma is presented as going insane; and worst of all, "Akher" apostatizes. This putative lionization of Rabbi Akiva occurs at 15b-vi-16a-i of our Gemara section

David Talbott - Hour 1 - Symbols of an Alien Sky
December 15, 2011
David Talbott, a comparative mythologist whose work offers a radical new vantage point on the origin of ancient cultural themes and symbols, is the primary catalyst behind the "Saturn Model." He also proposes a "Polar Configuration," inspired by Immanuel Velikovsky involving the five planets Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars and Earth. He claims that in ancient times the five planets orbited the Sun as a single linear unit, which rotated about a point close to Saturn, before its break-up at the end of the Golden Age. He claims that the violent evolution of this "Polar Configuration" provoked the myth-making epoch of human history. David will explain his theory and how he utilizes points of agreement between cultures to reconstruct our past. We'll discuss the "great conjunction," the birth of myth and symbols and the turning sky. David is also the co-author (with Wallace Thornhill) of Thunderbolts of the Gods and The Electric Universe. Talbott will talk about electricity in space, reconstructing plasma discharge and chronicled formations in our sky.

Religion in Carthage

Punic stelae

Cippi and stelae of limestone are characteristic monuments of Punic art and religion, and are found throughout the western Phoenician world in unbroken continuity, both historically and geographically. The majority was set up over urns containing the ashes of human sacrifices, which had been placed within open-air sanctuaries. Such sanctuaries constitute striking relics of the Western Mediterranean Phoenician or Punic civilisation.

One of the most important stelae was the "Marseilles Tariff" found in the port of Marseille and originally from the temple of Baal-Saphon in Carthage. The tariff regulated the payments to the priests for performing sacrifices,[1] and is closely related to the normatives and provisions of the Leviticus.[2]

Child sacrifice

Carthage was described by its competitors as practicing child sacrifice. Plutarch (ca. 46–120 AD) mentions the practice, as do Tertullian, Orosius, Diodorus Siculus and Philo. However, Livy and Polybius do not. The Hebrew Bible also mentions what appears to be child sacrifice practiced at a place called the Tophet ("roasting place") by the Canaanites, related to the Carthaginians, although there is to date no evidence of human sacrifice among the Canaanites.

QuoteIn former times they (the Carthaginians) had been accustomed to sacrifice to this god the noblest of their sons, but more recently, secretly buying and nurturing children, they had sent these to the sacrifice.[3]

Some of these sources suggest that babies were roasted to death on a heated bronze statue. According to Diodorus Siculus, "There was in their city a bronze image of Cronus extending its hands, palms up and sloping toward the ground, so that each of the children when placed thereon rolled down and fell into a sort of gaping pit filled with fire."[3]

The accuracy of such stories is disputed by some modern historians and archaeologists.[4][5] Nevertheless, several apparent "Tophets" have been identified, chiefly a large one in Carthage, dubbed the "Tophet of Salammbó", after the neighbourhood where it was unearthed in 1921.[6]

Sites within Carthage and other Phoenician centers revealed the remains of infants and children in large numbers; many historians interpret this as evidence for frequent and prominent child sacrifice to the god Ba'al Hammon.

Greek, Roman and Israelite writers refer to Phoenician child sacrifice.[citation needed] However, some historians have disputed this interpretation, suggesting instead that these were resting places for children miscarried or who died in infancy.[citation needed] The debate is ongoing among modern archeologists and historians.[citation needed] Skeptics suggest that the bodies of children found in Carthaginian and Phoenician cemeteries were merely the cremated remains of children that died naturally.[7] Sergio Ribichini has argued that the Tophet was "a child necropolis designed to receive the remains of infants who had died prematurely of sickness or other natural causes, and who for this reason were "offered" to specific deities and buried in a place different from the one reserved for the ordinary dead".[8]

According to Lawrence and Wolff there is a consensus among scholars that Carthaginian children were sacrificed by their parents, who would make a vow to kill the next child if the gods would grant them a favor: for instance that their shipment of goods were to arrive safely in a foreign port.[9] They placed their children alive in the arms of a bronze statue of:
Quote"    the lady Tanit ... . The hands of the statue extended over a brazier into which the child fell once the flames had caused the limbs to contract and its mouth to open ... . The child was alive and conscious when burned ... Philo specified that the sacrificed child was best-loved.[10]    "

(Jewish Blood Libel continues until today...--CSR)
Later commentators have compared the accounts of child sacrifice in the Old Testament with similar ones from Greek and Latin sources speaking of the offering of children by fire as sacrifices in the Punic city of Carthage, which was a Phoenician colony. Cleitarchus, Diodorus Siculus and Plutarch all mention burning of children as an offering to Cronus or Saturn, that is to Ba`al Hammon, the chief god of Carthage.  <$>  Issues and practices relating to Moloch and child sacrifice may also have been overemphasized for effect. After the Romans finally defeated Carthage and totally destroyed the city, they engaged in post-war propaganda to make their arch enemies seem cruel and less civilized.

Motivations behind the sacrifices

Some authors, like Stager and Wolff,[9] believe that the real purpose behind children's sacrificies was birth control. The fact that the preferred victims were male, however, exposes the weakness of this theory. The most plausible motivation was, according to available evidence, to establish a way of "cementing the vertical and horizontal power relationship within the social structure".[11]

Evidence from archaeology

Stelae in the Tophet of Salammbó covered by a vault built in the Roman period

Most archaeologists accept that some sacrifices did occur. Lawrence E. Stager, Professor of Archaeology of Israel and Director of the Semitic Museum at Harvard University, who directed the excavations of the Carthage Tophet in the 1970's, takes the view based on ancient texts that infant sacrifice was practiced there. Stager is joined by Joseph Greene, Assistant Director of the Semitic Museum, a member of Stager's team in the excavations of Carthage, and author of the American Schools of Oriental Research's "Punic Project Excavations": Child Sacrifice in the Context of Carthaginian Religion: Excavations in the Tophet.

According to these scholars, in the Tophet of Salammbó, Carthage, an estimated 20,000 urns were deposited between 400 BC and 200 BC, with the practice continuing until the early years of the Christian period. The urns contained the charred bones of newborns and in some cases the bones of fetuses and 2-year-olds. These double remains have been interpreted to mean that in the cases of stillborn babies, the parents would sacrifice their youngest child. There is a clear correlation between the frequency of sacrifice and the well-being of the city. In bad times (war, poor harvests) sacrifices became more frequent, indicating an increased assiduousness in seeking divine appeasement, or possibly a population controlling response to the reduction of available food in these bad times, or perhaps increased child mortality due to famine or disease.

The area covered by the Tophet was probably over an acre and a half by the fourth century B.C., with nine different levels of burials. Archaeologists have also discovered evidence of child sacrifice in Sardinia and Sicily.

Animal remains, mostly sheep and goats, found inside some of the Tophet urns strongly suggest that this was not a burial ground for children who died prematurely. The animals were sacrificed to the gods, presumably in place of children (one surviving inscription refers to the animal as "a substitute"). It is conjectured that the children unlucky enough not to have substitutes were also sacrificed and then buried in the Tophet.

The Tophet

"Tophet" is a term derived from the Bible, used to refer to a site near Jerusalem in which Canaanites and Israelites sacrificed children. It is now used as a general term for all such sacred sites. In Carthage, it was the location of the temple of the goddess Tanit and the necropolis. (These are the Jews still today...--CSR)

The Bible does not specify that the Israelite victims were buried, only burned, although the "place of burning" was probably adjacent to the place of burial. Indeed, soil in the Tophet of Salammbó was found to be full of olive wood charcoal, probably from the sacrificial pyres. We have no idea how the Phoenicians themselves referred to the places of burning or burial or to the practice itself, since no large body of Phoenician writing has come down to us

The History of Hamsa Bracelets

The History of Hamsa Bracelets

The hamsa bracelet has its roots in a rich, multifaceted, Middle Eastern tradition. This ancient amulet purports to provide protection from evil intent, while bestowing positive energy, happiness and health upon the wearer.

    Description

A golden hamsa. The pair of fish that encircles the eye represent good luck in Jewish mysticism

The hamsa, also called the hamsa hand, is an amulet worn by people in ancient times for magical protection against evil. It was also hung on the walls of households throughout the Middle East and North Africa. It is usually shaped like a hand, with an eye design in the center of the palm. The Arabic word "hamsa" (and the Hebrew word "chamsah") mean "five," a reference to the number of fingers. The eye represents the "evil eye." The hamsa is symbolically designed to mean that the five fingers can be used to blind anyone who aims evil intent at the wearer.

QuoteOrigins

Although the hamsa is recognized as a Middle Eastern symbol---mainly associated with Arabs and Jews---its exact origins are unknown. Some theorize that it originated in ancient Phoenicia, where the people used it as a symbol of the goddess Tanit. Others suggest that it originated as a Hindu symbol of a god or goddess. There is also a suggestion that ancient Jews were probably the first to use the hamsa as a protective item.
<$>

    Different Terms for Hamsa

Terms used for the amulet differ from one culture to another. In Islam, it is called the Hand of Fatima, named after an episode in which Fatima (c. 605-632), a daughter of the prophet Muhammad, continued her cooking on a hot frying pan without being hurt despite being emotionally shaken upon seeing her husband with a concubine. Additionally, Arabs refer to it as hamsa, perhaps its most well-known name. Jews refer to it as hamesh or chamsah---or the Hand of Miriam, named after the sister of the Hebrew biblical leaders Moses and Aaron.

    Significance of Red Color

A red hamsa with the Hebrew inscription "Hamsa, Hamsa, Hamsa" <$>

QuoteIn Jewish culture, red is seen as an especially powerful color for warding off evil. Historically, it was one of the more important items for the building of the First Temple, which was commissioned by King Solomon and completed circa 960 B.C.
(Red Shield)

    Popularity of the Hamsa Bracelet

Celebrities like Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan wear hamsa bracelets

In recent times, the hamsa has been revived among artists and designers drawing inspiration from the motifs of ancient times, and people with an interest in the intertwining of spirituality (particularly Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism) and symbolism. The most popular reincarnation of the hamsa has been the hamsa bracelet, which is comparatively easy to make. It has also become an ideal anniversary and birthday gift.

    A Unifying Symbol

With its roots in Arab and Jewish tradition and culture, peace activists have adopted the hamsa as a symbol of similarity between the two groups of people at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is seen and used as a gesture of peace and prosperity in the Middle East in general.

When the profane becomes sacred
The Frankist chapter of Jewish history in Podolia, where Jacob Frank was active, lasted for only two years in the middle of the 18th century. It all began with a mystic-erotic ceremony in Lanckorona.
By Israel Jacob Yuval   <:^0

Many messianic figures in Jewish history bore names with messianic significance. Two of the most famous would-be redeemers whose names testify to their messianic qualities were Jesus ("redeemer," in Hebrew ) of Nazareth and Shimon Bar Kochba (Bar Kochba is "son of the star," in Hebrew ). It may be that Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi, the editor of the Mishna, also saw himself as a messiah, identifying with the tribe of Judah, which established the kingdom of the House of David. I recently came upon a suggestion that Moses Maimonides had messianic pretensions too, stemming from his identification with his name. He saw himself as a second Moses, and therefore, like the first one, he wrote a new Torah (the Mishna Torah ), led his people as the rais (leader ) of the Jews, and was close to the ruler of Egypt. Scholar Moshe Idel argues that Shabbetai Zvi identified with the astrological and messianic qualities of the planet Saturn ("Shabbetai" in Hebrew ). And Jacob Frank, who died in 1790, the founder of the Frankists, the sect that viewed him as the Messiah, identified with the biblical figure of Jacob the forefather, and saw himself as the third Shabbetai, after Shabbetai Zvi and his disciple Baruchia Russo.

Pawel Maciejko's book about the history of the Frankist movement, soon to be published in Hebrew translation by the Zalman Shazar Center, reminded me of the experience I had several decades back when I read Gershom Scholem's book "Sabbetai Sevi: The Mystical Messiah, 1626-1676." It is very rare for a work of scholarly research to offer such a fascinating reading experience. From this point of view, Maciejko's book on Frank and the Frankist movement, which was awarded a 2010 Polonsky Prize for Creativity and Originality in the Humanities at the Hebrew University, where the author is a lecturer in Jewish thought, is a natural and valuable successor to Scholem's classic volume on Shabbetai Zvi and his followers.

And it is also an innovative book, with not merely one, but many important innovations. One of them is the difference Maciejko discerns between the Frankists and the Sabbateans. Maciejko argues that the Frankists cannot be seen as the direct descendants of the latter. Jacob Frank himself made every effort to distance himself from the Sabbateans as well as from the Doenmeh (the Sabbatean sect in the Ottoman Empire ). To Frank, Shabbetai Zvi achieved nothing, and it was he alone who could be considered an innovator. This search for difference and uniqueness characterizes Frank's life story and his behavior. Everywhere he went, he stood out as different and foreign.

Maciejko takes the time to point out some of the traits that differentiate the Frankists from the previous movement: their public profile and their willingness to involve the government in internal Jewish matters, and as a result, the brutality of the rabbinic campaign against them. While the Sabbateans were considered an internal Jewish problem, with which Jewish laws and theological arguments could cope, the Frankists were seen as a divisive presence within Judaism, and one that was likely to create a new religion.

Dance of the rabbi's wife

The book depicts Podolia (today part of Ukraine, at the time in Poland ), where Jacob Frank was active in the mid-18th century, as a place in which Jewish heresy flourished. Even a century after Shabbetai Zvi's conversion to Islam, in 1666, many Jews in Podolia continued to follow his path. The Frankist-Jewish chapter lasted only two years. It began in 1756, with a mystical and erotic ceremony in the city of Lanckorona. The local rabbi's wife danced naked with a Torah crown on her head and the rest of the participants, Frank's followers, sang and danced with her. They celebrated with bread and wine, and kissed her as though she were a mezuzah.

The ceremony illustrates a position that equates religious symbolism with real, ontological existence, and some see it as an expression of the abandonment of a medieval symbolism that was detached from real life. This incident presents the Frankists as people who see the profanation of religious commandments as being of central importance in the undermining of rabbinical authority. The affair raised a rabbinical storm and led to the ostracizing of the Frankists.

While the Sabbateans were also officially excommunicated, their ostracism was never enforced. And their excommunication had been undertaken only at the initiative of individuals, and not of the rabbinic establishment. The Frankists were the first to be excommunicated in an organized and methodical way. The reason was that the ceremony in Lanckorona broke the earlier conspiracy of silence. The Sabbateans had acted without attracting rabbinic attention, along the lines of "Don't ask, don't tell." But this incident was the crossing of a line well beyond what had been acceptable in an earlier time. The straw that broke the camel's back was not necessarily the erotic-sexual aspect of the ceremony, but the use of the Christian symbols of bread and wine.

The Frankist Jewish chapter ended in 1759, with the conversion of the Frankists to Christianity. Like the Cathar movement that arose in Languedoc, France, in the 12th and 13th centuries, whose followers were accused of heresy and excommunicated, and which led the Church to establish the Inquisition, those who brought the Frankists to conversion were traditional Jews, headed by the Council of Four Lands (a representative body of Jews from Eastern Europe that met to discuss issues of mutual interest between 1580 and 1764 ), which preferred to see them outside the community rather than tolerate the existence of Jewish heresy within.

But not all the Jews felt this way. Judah Leibes raises the possibility that the Baal Shem Tov (Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer, the founder of Hasidism ) died in 1760 of sorrow, due to the conversion of the Frankists a year earlier, since he viewed them as an organ of the mystical body of Judaism. But this was his personal opinion, while the rabbinic establishment preferred to expel the rebellious sons. And so, after many generations in which the Jews struggled with all their might against conversion to Christianity, the rabbinic leadership in Poland supported and even encouraged the followers of Jacob Frank to become Christians.

Confirm the blood libel

This push toward conversion was a result of the loathing that the Frankists aroused among traditional Jews. Maciejko points to the Frankists' attempts to confirm the truth of the blood libel (the claim that Jews required Christian blood for their religious ceremonies ), with the support of conservatives in the church establishment, even in the face of opposition by church office holders, headed by conservative circles in the papal curia. The Frankists enlarged the controversy by claiming that proof could be found in Jewish texts - in the customs of Passover, and in the Talmud. The innovation here was that the apparent Jewish demand for Christian blood was not made in the name of healing or magic, as was claimed during the Middle Ages, but as an inherent requirement of religious commandments. From then on not only marginal and deluded groups were suspected of this deed, but all the practitioners of the religion of Moses. In his excellent analysis, Maciejko describes the stance of the Frankists with regard to the blood libel from the perspective of its future impact, as well, and shows that the destructive influence of their claims percolated into the 20th century, feeding even into the infamous ritual murder charge against Menahem Mendel Beilis, in Russia, in 1913.

The exacerbation of internal religious tensions within Judaism was directly connected to the lessening of tensions with Christians. One of the biggest fighters against the Sabbateans, Rabbi Jacob Emden (Germany, 1697-1776 ), viewed Christianity as a religion meant to spread monotheism and the "seven commandments of the sons of Noah" among the pagans, and as a "heavenly church." Whereas Christianity and Judaism were borne, he believed, out of a common denominator, and both were legitimate, though meant for different peoples, he regarded Sabbateanism as a new and dangerous religion. But while his war against the Sabbateans was not a big success, the emergence of Frankism enabled him to extend the battle to the Frankists too.

Emdan's position led him to involve Christians in his struggle against the Jewish heresy. The Frankists responded in kind. And so the two camps stood facing each other, each turning to different Christian groups for aid. The Frankists depicted Judaism as a religion of the uncharitable letter of the law, while the rabbis depended on the revulsion of the church toward ecstatic religious movements and their suspicion of private religious experience which deviated from the church framework.

These processes led to the differentiation of Frankism from Sabbateanism. And this occurred, paradoxically, at a time when Jacob Frank was absent from Podolia, in the decisive years of 1756-7, which he spent in Turkey. But Frank continued to guide his followers even from a distance, a fact expressed in two main principles: adoption of the Christian holy trinity and rejection of the Talmud as filled with errors and sacrilege.

The history of the Frankists did not end with their conversion. Some of them sought to retain marks of their Judaism even after they became Christian: to keep Hebrew names, to refrain from marrying non-Jewish women and eating pork, to rest on the Jewish Sabbath as well as on Sunday, and to study Jewish mysticism. The conversion of the Frankists aroused contradictory responses in the Christian world. The Protestants were disappointed with the Frankists' attachment to "idolatrous" Catholicism, rather than "pure" Protestantism, which seemed to them closer to Judaism. In contrast, the Catholics used their success with the Frankists to serve their infighting with the Protestants, especially after religious tolerance became part of the Polish legal system at the beginning of the 1770s. Frank really was a pious Catholic in his religious consciousness, attracted to the mythic and ritualistic aspects of Christianity.

And so the Frankist movement owed a large debt to the collaboration between the rabbis and the priesthood. When the Sabbatean movement began, when it was still a small group, all it sought to do was oppose the rabbis and their authority. Sabbateanism started out as a mass movement but after the conversion to Islam of Shabbetai Zvi and Nathan of Gaza, it became marginal and had a scattered leadership. The Frankists moved in the opposite direction. Rabbinical rejection turned them into a mass movement in 1759-60. Rabbinical pressure on one side and the rabbis' praise for Catholicism on the other caused the Frankists to define their identity more clearly as separate both from Judaism and from Christianity. These determinations are the most important innovations in this fertile and groundbreaking book.

"The Mixed Multitude" ends with a description of the Frankist movement in three of its largest centers: Offenbach, Prague and Warsaw. It points out that the figures active in the Prague center at first admired Jacob Frank but then had reservations about him and his descendants. This circle is most responsible for the idea that Frankism is a natural continuation of Sabbateanism, and developed the view that sees both of these movements as forerunners of the Jewish Enlightenment.

The story of the Frankist movement in the book is woven into the texture of the political and intellectual history of the period; the result is a wonderful panorama of a Jewish world well-connected with its non-Jewish surroundings.

The "Incidental" J-Hamsa seen today... with the "Red String"...--CSR

--------

"Talk to the Hand"  <:^0

Hamsa Hand Bracelet
QuoteThe red string that Nicole Richie, Eva Mendez, Tori Spelling, and Lauren Conrad of the Hills have been wearing is the red string Hamsa bracelet. It's been said that the Hamsa hand is an ancient amulet for magical protection from the evil eye. Think of it as a spiritual, and fashionable accessory all in one. Hamsa hand is a mirror gold finish on a red string bracelet with clasp.

Red string (Kabbalah)

Red string on the left hand

QuoteWearing a thin red string (as a type of talisman) is a custom, popularly thought to be associated with Judaism's Kabbalah, to ward off misfortune brought about by an "evil eye" (עין הרע in Hebrew). In Yiddish the red string is called a roite bindele.
<:^0

The red string itself is usually made from thin red wool thread. It is worn, or tied, as a type of bracelet or "band" on the left wrist of the wearer (the receiving side).

Traditional Jewish beliefs

Sometimes, the string has been wound in large quantities around the tomb of the Hebrew Biblical matriarch Rachel, near Bethlehem. It is considered to have great powers of "good fortune" and grant added divine protection to those who wear it. Most rabbis though do not encourage the practice of this "segulah".

On the Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem yeshiva site, the "ask the rabbi" column says:

Quote...There is no written mention in the Torah, Halachah or Kabbalah about tying a red string around the wrist. However, it seems to be a custom that has been around for some time, and may be based on Torah or Kabbalistic ideas. If there is any validity to the custom, it would be considered a segulah or protective type of act...There are sources for such special properties of seguloth. The Torah states, "The Lord your God has chosen you to be His Am Segulah (treasured people) out of all the peoples upon the face of the earth" (Deut. 7:6). Why are the Jewish people called G-d's segulah? Rabbi Chaim of Voloshzin says it's on account of the Torah and mitzvoth that have a miraculous effect on them, enabling their prayers to be answered in a special way. In fact, the mitzvoth themselves are protective: Charity protects from natural death, sanctifying the new moon protects from unnatural death, the succah protects from exile, and so on.

Therefore a custom that is based on Torah ideas or mitzvoth may also have special segula properties on a smaller scale. Regarding the red string, the custom is to tie a long red thread around the burial site of Rachel, the wife of Jacob. Rachel selflessly agreed that her sister marry Jacob first to spare Leah shame and embarrassment. Later, Rachel willingly returned her soul to God on the lonely way to Beit Lechem, in order to pray there for the desperate Jews that would pass by on their way to exile and captivity. Often, one acquires the red string when giving charity.

Perhaps for these reasons the red thread is considered a protective segula. It recalls the great merit of our matriarch Rachel, reminding us to emulate her modest ways of consideration, compassion, and selflessness for the benefit of others, while simultaneously giving charity to the poor and needy. It follows that this internal reflection that inspires good deeds, more than the string itself, would protect one from evil and harm.[1]

Similarly, Rabbi Ahron Lopiansky writes more critically on the Aish HaTorah site, pointing to the ambiguous origin and controversial nature of using the red string even among the ancient rabbis:

QuoteFirstly, there is absolutely no genuine kabbalistic source for wearing a red thread around one's wrist to ward off the "evil eye." While there exists such a practice amongst some devout Jews, it is not mentioned in any kabbalistic work. Yes, there is a fleeting mention in the Talmud about the practice of tying a bundle of herbs or gems and wearing them in order to ward off the "evil eye." No special color, nor Rachel, nor even thread are mentioned. Also, the comment is an offhand remark concerning laws of Sabbath observance.

One of the late great scholars, the Debreczyner Rav, mentions it as a practice he saw in his father's home, but his extensive search could not find a written source for the practice.

QuoteThe good news is that there is a clear and early source that mentions tying a red string to ward off an "evil eye" and that is in the Tosefta, an early Talmudic work (Shabbat, ch. 7-8). The bad news is that it clearly states that tying a red string around oneself is severely prohibited. It is characterized as "Darchei Emori," a worthless, superstitious practice, close to idol-worship.[2]

Some Orthodox Jews who worry about the negative powers of the "evil eye" may have an old tradition to tie a small red-colored string near the bed of a baby in hopes of invoking God's mercy, and that no ill-harm should befall the child.[citation needed]  <:^0

Biblical history

A scarlet thread, tied about the wrist, is written about in the Book of Genesis in the Holy Bible (which is the same as the first Book of Bereshit in the Torah).

In Genesis 38, Judah came to know his daughter-in-law Tamar, who became pregnant by Judah, and gave birth to twin boys. The following verses about this event are taken from the standard King James Bible:

QuoteGenesis, chapter 38:
27 - And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28 - And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29 - And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30 - And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

Thus, we can see the above scriptural documentation of a scarlet thread being tied about the wrist of Judah's son Zarah.

Modern trend

There was a contemporary resurgence of the red string in the 1980s post-Intifada period in Israel, perhaps best understood as a type of folklore created under conditions of personal and national anxiety and stress.[3][4]
 <$>
QuoteIn the late 1990s the red string became popular with many celebrities in the United States, including many non-Jews. Led by Madonna and her children, those that have taken to wearing them have included: Michael Jackson, Rosie O'Donnell, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Sienna Miller, Paulina Rubio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Charlize Theron, Mariah Carey, Lucy Liu, Kylie Minogue, Mick Jagger, David Paterson, Naomi Campbell, Britney Spears, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, David and Victoria Beckham, Avril Lavigne, Sandra Bernhard, Reese Witherspoon, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Lauren Conrad, and Anthony Kiedis.

Star of David

The Star of David plays an important role in kabbalism and the occult. The misuse of it as the symbol of something positive for Israel, Hebrew Roots and Messianic groups needs to be corrected. There never was a star symbol connected to the reign of David. This symbol is very ancient and was always called by various other names and always in connection to the occult. Hitler--who was heavily involved in theosophy-- used this occult symbol to attempt to shame the Jewish people.

The double triangle is [currently and historically] the symbol for the "chakras of Hinduism" and corresponding sefiroth of kabbalists and also, for witchcraft, sorcery and magicians. It is also referred to as the "male/female triangle", the Crest or Seal of Solomon, the Shield of David, and the hexagram, which is the most wicked symbol in witchcraft. 17.

Dr. Cathy Burns relates that the hexagram is linked with spiritualism in such matters as consulting the dead, reincarnation, the calling up of demons and in some sorcery, is viewed as the footprint of certain demons. The list of its applications includes the Hindu gods and goddesses and many others. 18.

According to the 1972 Edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica, under the  article, Magen David, this hexagram symbol is known under various names: "Hebrew...Shield of David...hexagram or six-pointed star." In this Jewish article, the six-pointed star or hexagram is mentioned many times and acknowledged as being a magical symbol:

Quote"In Arab sources the hexagram...was widely used under the designation "seal of Solomon," a term which was also taken over by many Jewish groups...It is not clear in which period the hexagram was engraved on the seal or ring of Solomon, mentioned in the Talmud (Git.68a-b) as a sign of his dominion over the demons instead of the name of God, which originally appeared...In Arabic magic the "seal of Solomon" was widely used, but at first it's use in Jewish circles was restricted to relatively rare cases. Even then, the hexagram and pentagram were easily interchangeable and the name was applied to both figures."

Quote"Between 1300 and 1700 the two terms shield of David and seal of Solomon, are used indiscriminately, predominately in magical texts...

[Encyclopaedia Judaica; 1972 Edition, Article: Magen David ]

Those who think that the hexagram is the real symbol of Israel--which is in fact, the 7 candle menorah,-- are uninformed. Even Judaic anti-missionaries suggest it came from Babylonian pagan worship, but in the same breath say that doesn't matter. God dealt with the star of remphan/chiun/molech that some in Israel went after...

Acts 7:41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? 43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. See also: Deuteronomy 4:19; 17:3; 2 Kings 17:16; 21:3; Psalm 81:12; Jeremiah 19:13; Ezekiel 20:25,39; Amos 5:25-26; Romans 1:24; 2 Thessalonians 2:11

Kabbalists throughout history have also adopted it as the symbol for the Talisman of Saturn and involves the worship of the god Remphan, which is referred to in the Bible (Acts 7:37-43). It is also referred to in Scripture as the star of Molech (Amos 5:26-27) -- an abomination to God. Solomon became involved in this paganism and built an altar to Molech. An occult source presents a complete history of the Talisman of Saturn or Remphan and its connection to kabbalists at:

http://id.mind.net/~wolfc/library/magic ... lisman.htm

Please note also the connection of the Star of David and the mark of the beast, Talismans and astrology. One man, a believer in Christ and of Hebrew descent, said this regarding the occult connections of the Star of David in those articles:

Quote"... Your expose' on the six pointed star again clearly reveals the true nature of this abomination. I asked some leading rabbis in Israel about it, and they confessed that it was not a traditional seal of Israel and its origin was only sketchy at best. We also talked a bit about the Kaballah; with my staunch denunciation of it. Israel is in bondage under that abominable sign and even the sincere don't realize it, and worse even the saved!!

"I had a real uneasiness about it and purged any sign of it from the house a couple of years ago. My wife had a fit, and thought I was crazy for listening to a former Illuminist witch who swore the magen David was extremely evil. I followed my convictions, and your site sealed it for me tonight. I had not realized its direct link to the star of Egypt, and now I know!!" 19.

The Star of David symbol also has sexual significance for occult practices. In the book "Masonic and Occult Symbols" by Dr. Cathy Burns we read:

Quote"...Phallicism is symbolized in witchcraft as a point with an circle and also as the unity of two triangles making a hexagram. These are represented in the Washington Monument and the Star of David. The Mexican Indians used the hexagram as a symbol of their phallic worship. For 300 years the Star of David or Hexagram was known as the "Crest of Solomon." It is used to conjure up demons and is the most evil sign in witchcraft. It means "to hex" or to put a spell on someone."

"When the male triangle penetrates the female triangle, it forms the six-pointed crest of the Seal of Solomon or hexagram, the most wicked symbol in witchcraft". 20.

It should be noted that the Promise Keepers Sacred Assembly was held before the Washington Monument, an obelisk which is a phallic symbol built by the Freemasons.

Further connections become apparent as stated by the Masonic J.D. Buck, who explains that the Star of David and "six-pointed star" or hexagram symbol of the House of Theosophy are identical to the compass of Freemasonry.

"The perfect equilibrium of spirit and matter is symbolized by the six-pointed star, which is again only another form of the Square and Compass, each having a base-line from which to form a triangle." 21.

Pagan symbolism has infiltrated many denominations that fly the banner of Christianity and as a matter of historical fact, this writer presents the following argument against symbols. If we believe the Bible is the true Word of God--we must start with what God said. In Deuteronomy 4:14-19; 23; 7:25-26, God reminds us to avoid anything connected with false gods, images, idolatry or necromancy. Certainly many other verses referring to witchcraft, sorcery and astrology are listed as abominations to God.

We are to have nothing to do with promoting or embracing any symbolism that is associated with that wickedness. This was not written for the Jews of the Old Testament only, but must also apply now. There is nothing that man can create, that may become an emblem or symbol of God.

    Acts 17:29

"Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's devices."

It is no surprise that many Christians have inadvertently adopted occult symbolism who should never have done so. We find that many religious groups use crosses such as the squared red (and other colors) cross, which was the symbol for the Knights Templar and other occult groups. Many wear jewelry, which, according to Cathy Burns, has its origins in the occult and was worn generally for protection as cited above or other similar ideas. From gemstones and birthstones, which are based on the occult, to cross necklaces, pendants and nativity charms, to the star of David, we see Christians adopt paganism that is forbidden to all. 22.

    Isaiah 42:8

"I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images."

The physical symbol of the cross, often with a crown, and in various forms has also been used as an occult symbol.

"...In Gaul we find the cross to have been a solar symbol when it had equal arms and angles; to the Phoenicians it was an instrument of sacrifice to their god, Baal; and to the Egyptians, the crux ansata was his symbol of eternal life..." 23.

We need no symbolism. We have Jesus Christ and the Word of God as a daily reminder. We are to abstain from even the appearance of evil.

    1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil."

Kabbalah Hexagrams Today

    Deuteronomy 18:10-12

"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination to the Lord."

While the information presented has spoken of historical manuscripts and clearly Kabbalist websites, the question must be answered as to whether talismans, amulets, incantations and other occult practices are being further mainstreamed, in Jewish culture and adapted for use by Messianic or Hebrew Roots organizations. From the Spring 1999, "THE SOURCE FOR EVERYTHING JEWISH catalogue, we see some of the items which reflect today's interest in these practices.

Filigree Hand Amulet Pendant. "Hamsa amulet is said to offer protection from the "evil eye." [An inquiry re: Hamsa, --a customer was told by the Jewish salesperson that the protection wasn't guaranteed but she wears several to keep evil away and, "they only work if you believe in them" & "... it's the same deal with Christians who wear crosses."]

Celestial Star Pendant [a star of David necklace]

Three Symbols Amulet Pendant - "Hamsa (the Arabic word for "five") -- symbolizing the protective hand of the Almighty -- holds Magen David [Star of David] and Chai (the Hebrew word for "life") "

"The Haggadah of Passover with Pop-up Spreads": "Adapted from the Bird's Head Haggadah, dating back to 13th century Germany. That historic manuscript was known for its illustrations showing the Hebrews with Birds' heads." 24

In the book section of this current catalogue, under the heading of "Meditation & Healing," we find the promotion of meditation techniques and many "New Age" concepts:

"Sterling "Healing Hand" Pendant :" The symbol originated in ancient India and represents the henna patterns of India and Africa. Energy radiates out from the central symbol-- in this case, a Star of David-- which sends healing energy where it is needed most."

"Everyday Kabbalah, A Personal Guide To Jewish Meditation, Healing and Personal Growth." by Melinda Ribner. Step-by-step manual integrating the spiritual teaching and meditation lessons of the Musar, Hasidic and Kabbalistic schools.

"Meditation--From The Heart of Judaism" "Edited by Avram Davis. In their own words, 22 masters of meditation-- rabbis, scholars, psychologists, teachers-- explain both the "how" and the "why" of their techniques."

"Minding The Temple of the Soul" by : " Tamar Frankel and Judy Greenfield. Tap the power of the Jewish tradition to awaken the body, balance the mind, and connect the soul. Simple exercises and movements, meditations and visualizations ..."

"Star of David Harmony Bell": "Since its creation in ancient times, the chiming sphere has served as a meditative device effective in reducing stress. Listening to its melodious sound while holding the metal sphere in the palm of your hand is a truly soothing experience."

"Satin Finish Sterling Protective Amulets" : "...protection against the "evil-eye." "Guard Us" Pendant Hebrew calligraphy translates as-- "GUARD US FROM ALL EVIL, FROM ALL FEAR AND FROM ALL ILLNESS."

"Sterling El-Shaddai Amulet Pendant": "Mystical object is meant to offer protection to the wearer. "SHADDAI-- one of the names of the Almighty-- appears in many Kabbalistic formulas."

"Hebrew-English Ruby Amulet Rings" : "14k gold and sterling silver with ruby gemstone. According to Kabbalah, the ruby offers the wearer special protection from the "evil eye," preserves health of body and soul, guards in pregnancy and childbirth, and protects from bad dreams..

"Guard Us" Ring Heb-Eng engraving-- "GUARD US FROM ALL EVIL, FROM ALL FEAR AND FROM ALL ILLNESS" 25.

The question that must be asked is: Why are Hebrew Roots, Messianic and many other "religious" organizations using the hexagram as the symbol for their logo, often with a book, presumably a Bible or Talmud, laid open upon it, or portrayed with other Hebrew figures or symbols within it? How many will continue to do so, even if warned? How many in HR leadership are sporting such articles as hexagram pendants or amulets and rings for the very purposes listed above. These things are not sold for any other purposes, but those listed in the Jewish Catalogue.

Depends on your classification of pagan...It is certainly not 'Jewish', unless one acknowledges the occult roots of Judaism that is based in older 'mystery' religions...It is an ancient symbol that probably can be traced back in rudimentary form to very early cultures in Babylon and Egypt...It is definitely a very old Vedic or Hindu symbol representing a kind of yin/yang or universal duality/interlocking extended to a multi-dimensional form:

Sri Yantra

It also contains a lotus form...Very well know in what is called 'Sacred Geometry'...Also used by people like Alice Bailey of the Lucifer Trust, and Blavatsky earlier.

QuoteThe 'SEAL of SATURN' becomes the 'STAR of DAVID' In an ancient document entitled, "The Magic Tables, Seals, Characters of the Planets, their Intelligence & Spirits," we find some of the tools that Occultists use to determine their astrological mysteries.

To the right, we see the 'Table of Saturn,' whose numbers are mystically calculated to create the planet's sigils. The 'Zazel' sigil of the 'spirit of Saturn,' has already been addressed earlier.

The table numbers (1-2-3, 4-5-6, and 7-8-9) are used to draw the 'SEAL of SATURN' below it. The design creates two open triangles ( > and < ) facing in opposite directions.

Occultists close the triangles forming the six-sided HEXAGRAM commonly associated with SATURN, SATANISM, ASTROLOGY, the OCCULT, KABBALAH, 'CHRISTIANITY,'
ISLAM, and the modern state of ISRAEL.

SATURDAY is ISRAEL's SABBATH, and it is claimed by all professing 'Sabbath-keepers' across the globe. Those who have not studied to show themselves approved, or to whom it has not been revealed UNTIL NOW, do not know that they WORSHIP the CREATOR in VAIN, keeping dies Saturni, SATURN's DAY, which is directly associated with SATAN.

The HEXAGRAM is the IMAGE of SATURN,
for many centuries, condemned in the scriptures: "But ye have borne the tabernacle of your MOLOCH and CHIUN your images, the STAR of your god, which ye made to yourselves" (Amos 5:26).
This STAR of MOLOCH became the shameful symbol of Israel's apostasy.

Once again, the HEXAGRAM has become the IMAGE of ISRAEL, forcefully replacing the ancient MENORAH despite the objections of worldwide jewry. The Star of MOLOCH and CHIUN was renamed the 'Star of David.'

You obviously didn't read my Def Leppard article, or you maliciously omit the fact that I directly name the Jew in it. QuoteSaturn

Roman god of agriculture concerned with the sowing of seed. Equated with the Greek god Kronos. His consort was Ops. He was the father of Jupiter. His temple was constructed in the Roman Forum as early as the fifth century BC. It served as the Roman treasury (aerarium). His festival was the Saturnalia, observed on December 17 but later extended to seven days. It was the most popular Roman festival, characterized by a suspension of all business, a reversal of the roles of master and slave, the exchange of gifts (including candles to symbolize the reborn sun god), and a loosening of moral restrictions. Our Saturday was named after Saturn.

QuoteThe Gods of the Phonecians   <$>

The Phoenicians Worshiped the Father God Baal, The Mother Goddess Astarte/Ashtoreth, and the son Melqart /Tamuz. All of these Gods were primarily Gods of great force and of war.

Baal or Baalim or Balaam(AKA:Osiris/Saturn/Nimrod)

Baal (ba'al), plural Baalim (ba'allm) [Semitic,= possessor], name used throughout the Old Testament for the deity or deities of Canaan. The term was originally applied to various local gods, but by the time of the Ugarit tablets (14th cent. B.C.), Baal had become the ruler of the universe. Baal (Hadad) is regularly denominated "the son of Dagan," although Dagan (biblical Dagon) does not appear as an actor in the mythological texts. Baal also bears the titles "Rider of the Clouds," "Almighty," and "Lord of the Earth." He is the god of the thunderstorm, the most vigorous and aggressive of the gods, the one on whom mortals most immediately depend. Baal resides on Mount Zaphon, north of Ugarit, and is usually depicted holding a thunderbolt. Baal, also known as El. In 1978, Israeli archaeologists excavating at an eighth-century B.C. site in the eastern Sinai desert found several Hebrew inscriptions mentioning Ba'al and El in the form of "Elohim," a name used to refer to God in the Hebre w Bible. Further, whenever the Jews refer to God or our God they use "Eloh, Elohaino or Elohim." The Ugarit tablets make him chief of the Canaanite pantheon. He is the source of life and fertility, the mightiest hero, and the lord of war. There were many temples of Baal in Canaan, and the name Baal was often added to that of a locality, e.g., Baal-peor, Baal-hazor, Baal-hermon. The Baal cult penetrated Israel and at times led to a syncretism. The practices of holy prostitution and child sacrifice were especially abhorrent to the Hebrew prophets, who denounced the cult and its "high places" (temples). This abhorrence probably explains the substitution of Ish-bosheth for Esh-baal, of Jerubbesheth for Jerubbaal (a name of Gideon), and of Mephibosheth for Merib-baal. The substituted term probably means "shame." The final detestation of the term is seen in the use of the name Beelzebub (see SATAN), probably the same as Baal-zebub . 1 Kings 11.4-8; 2 Kings 1. The B aal of 1 Chron. 4.33 is probably the same as RAMAH 3. As cognates of Baal in other Semitic languages there are Bel (in Babylonian religion) and the last elements in the Tyrian names Jezebel, Hasdrubal, and Hannibal.

Astarte (AKA:Seramilias, Isis, Juno Diane ect.)

Astarte also spelled ASHTART, great goddess of the ancient Near East, chief deity of Tyre, Sidon, and Elath, important Mediterranean seaports. She was called Asherar-yam, our lady of the sea, and in Byblos she was Baalat, our dear lady. Astarte was linked with mother goddesses of neighboring cultures, in her role as combined heavenly mother and earth mother. Cult statues of Astarte in many different forms were left as votive offerings in shrines and sanctuaries as prayers for good harvest, for children, and for protection and tranquillity in the home. Hebrew scholars now feel that the goddess Ashtoreth mentioned so often in the Bible is a deliberate compilation of the Greek name Astarte and the Hebrew word boshet, "shame," indicating the Hebrew contempt for her cult. Ashtaroth, the plural form of the goddess's name in Hebrew, became a general term denoting goddesses and paganism. King Solomon, married to foreign wives, "went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians " (I Kings 11 :5). Later the cult places to Ashtoreth were destroyed by Josiah. Astarte/Ashtoreth is the Queen of Heaven to whom the Canaanites had burned incense and poured libations (Jer. 44). Astarte, goddess of love and war, shared so many qualities with her sister, Anath, that they may originally have been seen as a single deity. Their names together are the basis for the Aramaic goddess Atargatis. Astarte was worshipped as Astarte in Egypt and Ugarit and among the Hittites, as well as in Canaan. Her Akkadian counterpart was Ishtar. Later she became assimilated with the Egyptian deities Isis and Hathor, and in the Greco-Roman world with Aphrodite, Artemis, and Juno, all aspects of the Great Mother. Anath, also spelled ANAT, chief West Semitic goddess of love and war, the sister and wife (helpmate) of the god Baal. Considered a beautiful young girl, she was often designated "the Virgin" i n ancient texts. Probably one of the best known of the Canaan ite deities, she was famous for her youthful vigour and ferocity in battle; in that respect she was adopted as a special favourite by the Egyptian king Ramses II (reigned 1279-13 BC). Although Anath was often associated with the god Resheph in ritual texts, she was primarily known for her role in the myth of Baal's death and resurrection, in which she mourned and searched for him and finally helped to retrieve him from the netherworld. Egyptian representations of Anath show a nude goddess, often standing on a lion and holding flowers. During the Hellenistic Age, the goddesses Anath and Astarte (q.v.) were blended into one deity, called Atargatis (q.v.).

Melqart (AKA:Tamuz, Horus, Jupiter, Sol)

Melqart, Son of Baal (or El, Ruler of the Universe), God of Tyre, King of the Underworld, Protector of the Universe symbolized the annual cycle of vegetation and was associated with the female deity Astarte in her role as the maternal goddess. Also, he was considered the Heracles or Hercules of the Tyrians though he came from a more distant past than the Greek Heracles/Hercules. Melqart was also known as Eshmun by the Sidonians. The Greeks equated Melqart with Heracles who was held to be the mythical founder of the Macedonian dynasty. Melqart was also known by other names -- like other Phoenician gods and goddesses. He was known as Baal- Adon- Eshmun- Melqart the God of warand also as Thasian Heracles because he was worshipped on the island of Thasos. Also, a Temple of Melqart is known to have been on the island of Sancti Petri near Cadiz. Many historians such as Josephus Flavius refer to Melqart and Heracles interchangeab ly. Also, Herodutus, Theophrastus (Arsistotle's pupil) and Horace the Roman wrote about Melqart's Temple in Tyre. It had two pillars one of pure gold and the other of emeralds which shone brilliantly at night. Melqart made Tyre a Phoenician Jerusalem whose kings minted Tyrians coins with Melqart riding on the Phoenician Hippocampus (seahorse/monster). This unique position of Tyre in Phoenician mythology survived into the Christian Era as an amazingly modern city. The remains of the Temple of Eshmun (Sidon's Melqart) have been found in Sidon. The fame and name of Melqart travelled to the far corners of the Phoenician colonies around the Mediterranean and the other dominions and territories where the Phoenicians settled. The famous Pillars of Hercules of Gibraltar were actually known as the Pillars of Melqart but as time went by and the two gods became combined into one, the Pillars became those of Heracles or Hercules.

Because of the diverse languages, over time Nimrod, Semiramis, and Tammuz were called by different names from place to place. For instance, in Egypt, Tammuz was called Horus, the divine son in whom Osiris (Nimrod) was reincarnated after he was dismembered. The divine mother who gave birth to this divine son was Isis, the Egyptian name for Semiramis. Thus there were now three gods to whom worship was due, a Father God(Nimrod or Osiris or Saturn, Baal), his Son part Father part Son(Tammuz or Horus or Jupiter, Melqart), and a Mother Goddess Semiramis(AKA: Isis Goddess of ten thousand names, Juno, Diana, Venus Astarte, ect.), yet all of these were to be considered equal, because they were all to be considered equal parts of a triune god.
The Pagan Persecutions of Christians

All Christians who died in the Pagan persecutions died for refusing to Sacrifice to the Roman God's, and to Caesar as God on Earth. The gods were as follows The Father God, Saturn(AKA: Osiris, Nimrod, Baal) The Son God Jupiter (AKA:Horus, Tammuz, Sol latter called Mithras, Baal) The Mother Goddesses Venus, Juno, Diana(AKA: Semiramis, Isis, Astarte) these were the God's that you had to sacrifice to along with saying Caesar is Lord.

QuoteThe most frequent Christian symbols on the walls of the catacombs, are, the good shepherd with the lamb on his shoulder, a ship under full sail, harps, anchors, crowns, vines, and above all the fish.

The fish, ichthys in Greek, is the symbol for the Savior Jesus Christ. It was so used already in the first century [but not during the time of the apostles], not primarily because the fish played a part in Jesus life or because he appointed his apostles to be spiritual fisherman using the net of the Gospel. Rather, it was because ichthys could be used as a rebus form of a pagan symbol of the Pagan God Gagon. The word consists of these five letters of the Greek alphabet: i-ch-th-y-s. When these five letters are regarded as initials for five words, we obtain this Christian declaration: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Sorter. These words say: Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior. Very likely the fish symbol was used as a sign by which early Christians found and identified one another, especially in times of persecution. When scrawled on a wall or on the ground in the marketplace or near a fountain where people congregated, it let wandering Christians know that others of their faith had come to this community.

Blood Ritual
3: Human Sacrifice, the Talmud, and the Moloch Problem

No one today seriously suggests present-day Jews sacrifice children to Moloch. Moloch (sometimes spelled "Molech") was an Old Testament god whom the Hebrews worshipped from time to time, and to whom they sacrificed their children. The Babylonian Talmud, however, still permits Jews to sacrifice children to Moloch — under certain conditions.

LORD God Accepts Human Sacrifice (?)

First, let's get perspective. Some mistakenly believe human sacrifice is forbidden in the Old Testament. Certainly, some of the prophets railed against it. But in at least one book, LORD God accepts human sacrifice. And in another book, LORD God is appeased by human sacrifice.

In the following account from the Book of Judges, the Israelite warrior Jephthah is about to set off to make war on the Ammonites. In payment for victory, Jephthah promises LORD God he will sacrifice the first "whatsoever" that comes from his house to greet him upon his return. Unless Jephthah keeps oxen, sheep, goats, or chickens in his living room, he must expect the promised victim will be a human being. Notice that Jephthah does not promise to sacrifice "an ox" or "a goat," etc. (7)

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

— Judges 11:30-31 (KJV)

The first to pass through the doors of Jephthah's house upon his return is his only child, his beloved daughter.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

— Judges 11:34-35 (KJV)

Let us reflect for a moment. We know Jephthah vowed to LORD God to sacrifice "whatsoever" first came out of the door of his house. We suspect Jephthah plans to sacrifice one of his servants. But when the "whatsoever" turned out to be Jephthah's daughter, Jephthah is surprised. Notice his daughter's reaction:

And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

— Judges 11:36 (KJV)

She expresses no surprise that LORD God would accept a human sacrifice, nor does she protest; she does not say, "Father, let's use some common sense. You know LORD God is dead set against human sacrifice. He must have thought an ox would meet you on your return, or perhaps a goat, or one of the chickens. There must be a misunderstanding." Instead, she urges her father to keep his promise. She says:

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

Jephthah agrees:

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

— Judges 11:38-40 (KJV)

None but perfect animals are permitted to be ritually sacrificed in Judaism. Notice that Jephthah's daughter, too, is a perfect sacrifice — she is a virgin. Notice that LORD God does not stop this human sacrifice, as he stopped the sacrifice of Abraham's son.

The Old Testament does not specify how Jephthah sacrifices his daughter, but following the correct methods for animal sacrifice, he would slit her throat first and drain her blood into a Temple service vessel; cut off her arms, legs, and head; cut the torso in sections, remove her entrails and wash them; pour, sprinkle, and smear her blood at prescribed points around the altar; and burn the flesh. Or of course, a priest might do this for him. Read Animal Sacrifice and the Third Temple for details. (11)
LORD God is Appeased by Human Sacrifice

In 2 Samuel 21, David is king over Judah. A famine oppresses the land; King David learns that LORD God is punishing Israel for King Saul's sin (Saul attacked the Gibeonites in violation of Joshua's treaty Joshua 9:15). Therefore, in order to relieve the famine, David must appease the Gibeonites. On negotiation, the Gibeonites demand to be given seven descendants of Saul to be hanged "unto the LORD." David picks two of Saul's sons and five of Saul's grandsons. Coincidentally, the five grandsons are the children of Michal, the woman David had wanted to marry (see 1 Samuel 18:25). David gives these Israelites to the Gibeonites so the Gibeonites can hang them.

Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?
And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them.
But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

— 2 Samuel 21:1-11 (KJV)

LORD God did not explicitly request the hangings. But LORD God imposed an insufferable famine on the Israelites, LORD God named the Gibeonites as the people to be appeased, and the Gibeonites named the penalty. When it was done, LORD God apparently found the human sacrifice to be satisfactory: the chapter continues with accounts of battles, and the famine is not mentioned further. This sequence — an angry god causes a natural disaster, innocent life is slain to appease the god's anger, and the hardship ceases — this is the same sequence of events found in the human sacrifice rites of other primitive religions.
The Moloch Prohibition

With these precedents in mind, let us now look at two passages from the Old Testament concerning child sacrifice to the idol Moloch (or "Molech"). In the following passages, the words "seed" and "children" are synonymous. First, from Leviticus 18:

King James Version

And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

— Leviticus 18:21 (KJV)

English Standard Version

You shall not give any of your children to offer them (1) to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

— Leviticus 18:21 (ESV)

An ESV footnote gives a literal translation of the original Hebrew phrase: "1. Hebrew to make them pass through [the fire]." Now let's look at Second Kings 23:

King James Version

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

— 2 Kings 23:10 (KJV)

English Standard Version

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no one might burn his son or his daughter as an offering to Molech. (1)

— 2 Kings 23:10 (ESV)

An ESV footnote gives a literal translation of the original Hebrew phrase: "Hebrew might cause his son or daughter to pass through the fire for Molech."

Now let's look at the relevant cite from the Babylonian Talmud.

The full text and footnotes may be found by following the hot link at the end of the excerpt. It is our pleasure to make available the text of the complete tractates cited in this article, so you may read the Talmud in full context.)

MISHNAH. HE WHO GIVES OF HIS SEED TO MOLECH INCURS NO PUNISHMENT UNLESS HE DELIVERS IT TO MOLECH AND CAUSES IT TO PASS THROUGH THE FIRE. IF HE GAVE IT TO MOLECH BUT DID NOT CAUSE IT TO PASS THROUGH THE FIRE, OR THE REVERSE, HE INCURS NO PENALTY, UNLESS HE DOES BOTH.

— Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sanhedrin 64a
Soncino 1961 Edition, page 437

Following the Mishnah is a discussion among the sages. One of the Talmud Sages, Rabbi Ashi, comments as follows:

QuoteGEMARA. R. Ashi propounded: What if one caused his blind or sleeping son to pass through, (3) or if he caused his grandson by his son or daughter to pass through? — One at least of these you may solve. For it has been taught: [Any men ... that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall he put to death ... And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people;] because he hath given of his seed unto Molech. Why is this stated? — Because it is said, there shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire. From this I know it only of his son or daughter. Whence do I know that it applies to his son's son or daughter's son too? From the verse, [And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man] when he giveth of his seed unto Molech [and kill him not: Then I will ... cut him off.]

— Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sanhedrin 64b
Soncino 1961 Edition, page 439

Rabbi Dr. Freedman, one of the translators of the Soncino Tractate Sanhedrin, clarifies the passage. In a footnote, Rabbi Dr. Freedman confirms that the Talmud Sages use "seed" to denote living children, in the same sense as the Biblical translators understand the term in the above Biblical quotes. In this footnote, Rabbi Dr. Freedman paraphrases the question from Rabbi Ashi:

QuoteIs 'thou shalt not cause to pass' applicable only to a son who can naturally pass through himself, but not to a blind or sleeping son, who must be led or carried, or does it apply to all?

— Rabbi Dr. Freedman

Other footnotes within the same context clarify the fine point of distinction being drawn in the Mishnah and subsequent debates among the sages:

Lev. XVIII, 21. This proves that the offence consists of two parts; (i) formal delivery to the priests, and (ii) causing the seed to pass through the fire.

— Rabbi Dr. Freedman (2)

QuoteAs two separate offences, proving that giving one's seed to Molech is not idolatry. The differences [sic] is, that if one sacrificed to Molech, or caused his son to pass through the fire to some other deity, he is not punished.
<:^0

— Rabbi Dr. Freedman (3)

Following the Mishnah, Sanhedrin 64a and 64b contain a rousing debate between the Sages concerning:
Quotethe circumstances under which worshipping an idol is idolatry,
which idols may be worshipped without indulging in idolatry,
which parts of child sacrifice in what combination are punishable, and
how children may be sacrificed without violating Leviticus.

Interested students should look up Sanhedrin 64a and 64b and read the entire text, including footnotes. The complete version of Come and Hear™ contains Sanhedrin 64a-64b at htp://www.come-and-hear.com/sanhedrin/sanhedrin_64.html. For those to whom Tractate Sanhedrin is not available, the relevant text is included in the Appendix: Extract from Sanhedrin 64a and 64b.

The 1908 Catholic Encyclopedia contains an entry on Moloch that is of interest. The Catholic Encyclopedia states that the children were burned "after the victims had been put to death" — without citing any authority. This statement is directly contradicted by Rabbi Ashi and by Rabbi Dr. Freedman in the passages quoted above, wherein they consider the case of "a blind or sleeping son, who must be led or carried" to the fire. (Paragraphing has been added to this Catholic Encyclopedia excerpt to aid in readability).

The chief feature of Moloch's worship among the Jews seems to have been the sacrifice of children, and the usual expression for describing that sacrifice was "to pass through the fire", a rite carried out after the victims had been put to death.

The special centre of such atrocities was just outside of Jerusalem, at a place called Tophet (probably "place of abomination"), in the valley of Geennom. According to III (I) Kings, xi, 7, Solomon erected "a temple" for Moloch "on the hill over against Jerusalem", and on this account he is at times considered as the monarch who introduced the impious cult into Israel. After the disruption, traces of Moloch worship appear in both Juda and Israel.

The custom of causing one's children to pass through the fire seems to have been general in the Northern Kingdom [IV (II) Kings, xvii, 17; Ezech. xxiii, 37], and it gradually grew in the Southern, encouraged by the royal example of Achaz (IV Kings, xvi, 3) and Manasses [IV (II) Kings, xvi, 6] till it became prevalent in the time of the prophet Jeremias (Jerem. xxxii, 35), when King Josias suppressed the worship of Moloch and defiled Tophet [IV (II) Kings, xxiii, 13 (10)]. It is not improbable that this worship was revived under Joakim and continued until the Babylonian Captivity ...

... Of late, numerous attempts have been made to prove that in sacrificing their children to Moloch the Israelites simply thought that they were offering them in holocaust to Yahweh. In other words, the Melech to whom child-sacrifices were offered was Yahweh under another name. To uphold this view appeal is made in particular to Jer., vii, 31; xix, 5, and to Ezech., xx, 25-31. But this position is to say the least improbable. The texts appealed to may well be understood otherwise, and the prophets expressly treat the cult of Moloch as foreign and as an apostasy from the worship of the true God. The offerings by fire, the probable identity of Moloch with Baal, and the fact that in Assyria and Babylonia Malik, and at Palmyra Malach-bel, were sun-gods, have suggested to many that Moloch was a fire- or sun-god.

— Catholic Encyclopedia (4)
Lessons Learned

It is indeed unfortunate that the Jewish religion has not repudiated the doctrine that children may be sacrificed to Moloch. That doctrine, along with prayers in the Jewish liturgy calling for the return of ritual blood sacrifice (see Animal Sacrifice and the Third Temple), surely adds credence to charges that Jews engage in the ritual blood sacrifice of children. (See, for example, William Thomas Walsh's Isabella of Spain (12) concerning the ritualistic murder of a four-year-old Spanish boy; and a historical overview of the subject, Jewish Ritual Murder, a Historical Investigation, written in 1941 by Hellmut Schramm, Ph.D. (10)

Many societies and religions have practices in their histories of which they are not proud. Certainly the United States had slavery, as did many other countries. Catholicism had the persecution of Protestants, and Protestants had the persecution of Catholics; Europe had feudalism, Mexico had human sacrifice, and India had widow burnings (sati, the practice of burning a widow at her late husband's funeral). Scandinavia had the Vikings and reavers, Italy had the excesses of the Roman Empire, and China had foot-binding. Among all those people there came the admission, eventually, that those practices were not appropriate, and as hard on the pride as it was, they accepted responsibility and repudiated their former behaviors.

Repudiating the Talmud doctrines that approve of ritually sacrificing children (under certain conditions) would go a long way to creating good will between Judaism and people of other religious faiths. Christians and Muslims, too, should reexamine the Old Testament Scriptures. Is this really the church/mosque they want their children attending?

Thank you for your consideration of the above,

QuoteJupiter, the bull of heaven, Jupiter the midnight sun

Cook has unearthed a great deal of information on the role of Jupiter. This massive planet has always been a satellite of the Sun, and was instrumental in causing the breakup of the Saturnian system in 3147 BCE.

In his words,

Quote"The catastrophe of 3147 BC involved more than the disappearance of Saturn from the north sky. It involved the near "collision" of 8 planets. What most likely happened in 3147 BC is that Saturn, together with Earth, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Neptune, and Uranus, "ran into" Jupiter, which was then located probably at 0.7 AU from the Sun."

This is the bull of heaven, the usurper, who eventually left to an orbit further from the Sun, past the asteroid belt.

"The title of "Sun" was transferred from Saturn to Jupiter virtually everywhere in the world. The Egyptians simply relocated their original creator God, Ra ("sun"), from the North Pole to the ecliptic. The title "Sun" for Jupiter was deserved, for after Jupiter left the asteroid belt, it would have lit up the night sky brighter than the Moon. Plutarch suggested, in circa AD 200 (in Isis and Osiris), that Jupiter was seen at first as a globe three times the diameter of the Moon. That's big.

Jupiter would indeed have blazed like a sun once it left the asteroid belt. In historic times the comas of comets have managed to light the night sky to the point of blotting out the stars. Comets are only a few miles in diameter; Jupiter is 89,000 miles in diameter. The Maya of classical times (AD 400 to AD 900) still called Jupiter "the Midnight Sun," as did many other peoples in historical times."

Jupiter's primary feature was its plasma tail:

Quote"The tail of Jupiter, a plasma in glow mode, might have extended a half billion miles away from its south pole. Because Jupiter has a very strong, but reversed, magnetic field (unlike comets), most of the plasma expulsion would leave the planet at the location of its north magnetic pole -- at the bottom. This tail is the mountain that Marduk rose on, "in the center of the sky," or, as the Egyptians describe, "in the primordial waters" -- the Duat. The few depictions we have show the plasma as a very steep mountain.

A much smaller funnel-shaped plasma appeared above the globe, suggesting horns where the edges were most dense. In this form, this was the "Bull of Heaven" who had destroyed the home of the Gods."

Changing Calendars

The study of calendars used throughout history and across cultures, is another way to explore Earth and planetary changes. The Earth's orbit dictates the length of a solar year. Currently it is 365.24 days. It has not always been so. In fact it has changed four or five times since the Saturnian breakup in 3147 BCE. (In an earlier Thunderbolts post I erroneously said two).

The knowledge of these changes is little known, but there is ample evidence. Cook goes over this in detail in his Appendix A, Notes on Chronology:

http://www.saturniancosmology.org/chron.php

The following is a brief summary:
QuoteThe story of Earth's change in orbit is a study of Earth catastrophes. Calendars ended and new ones began because of these events. Mankind has continually fiddled with calendars in an effort to keep up with the changing heavens.
Cook posits there was a 225 day year during the Era of the Gods, based on the Egyptian King list record for the period called "kings before the flood". The flood is dated at 3147 BCE and was the cataclysm that ensued when the polar water bulge was released.

When Earth detached from Saturn it ended up in an orbit with a 240 day year.

In Cook's words:
Quote"The 240-day year was originally found by inspecting the data of the "kings after the flood," but it can also be inferred from the remnants of calendars in use in the following era (as in dividing the year up into 4 60-day periods, as in China). The 240-day year would have been in effect from 3147 BC through 2349 BC. The equivalent orbital distance from the Sun would have averaged 70.3 million miles (0.75 AU)."

Quote806 BCE to 685 BCE

For approximately 120 years, the planets gathered together in one last fit of destruction. The extent of catastrophe is mindboggling. Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, Jupiter, and Earth were all involved.

From Cook's chapter 24, The Destruction of Mars:
http://www.saturniancosmology.org/quet.php

"In mainland Greece, of 150 cities noted before the 8th century BC, only 13 survived to 650 BC. The same scale of destruction was experienced in Anatolia, the Middle East, and Italy. The period of 800 BC to 600 BC also saw the largest overseas colonization by the Greeks, as well as the virtual depopulation of the Eastern Mediterranean region and parts of Europe. De Grazia in The Iron Age of Mars (2009) estimates that of a Mediterranean population of 200,000,000 before 800 BC, only 5 million survived. The earlier level would not again be reached until AD 1900."

Mars was the major culprit, visiting repeatedly at 15 year intervals.

"During the various encounters of the 8th and 7th centuries BC, plasma interactions occurred between Venus and Mars, and between Mars and the Earth's Moon. These are described in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Homeric Poems, which follow closely in time to Homer's epics, have similar descriptions."

And how about this?

"The Olympic Games in Greece were instituted in 772 BC (Wikipedia says 776 BC) to commemorate interactions between the planets Venus, Mars, and the Moon four or eight years earlier.

There had been over 600 years of a quiet sky, from 1440 BC to 800 BC. Then, within a span of a hundred years, Venus, Mars, and Mercury closed in on the Earth (or seemed to). The length of the year changed, Mars repeatedly cruised very close to Earth (five or nine times) to cause massive earthquakes and interplanetary lighting strikes which traveled across wide areas and were accompanied by hurricanes of ground-up rock and burning trees. Then, just as suddenly, after the nova event of Venus in 685 BC, which surpassed the Sun in brilliance and dropped fire from heaven over wide areas of the Earth, ending with a lightning bolt from Jupiter directed at the Sun, it all stopped."

What is most amazing, is Cook's research that has led him to specific dates and times for some of these events:

"The dates, on the Gregorian calendar and all in the astronomical year 685 BC, are as follows:
• Venus and Mercury start to blaze, June 15
• Jupiter develops a coma, July 9

For me, reading Cook's chapters is a heartening experience - an eye-opening window into our obscure past. I recommend it greatly.

RE:   http://www.come-and-hear.com/editor/br_3.html

The readings from the Old Testament are my concern in this comment.  The author of the article on the Old Testament draws certain conclusions which are a matter of his own opinion.  But because I see his views as a point of confusion and a potential stumbling block concerning Jesus Christ, who together with the Father and the Holy Spirit (or Ghost) is the God of both the Old and New Testament, I would like a to publish a short rebuttal to a few points.

The main thrust of the author seems to be that the 'Jew-god' is Molech, whether it be the LORD in the OT or by that name itself in the Talmud.  To support this, he cites the book of Judges and Leviticus and gives a few examples.  But in each case it is clear (as the author even points out) that the LORD has not spoken with a demand for a sacrifice.  Rather, the men in their own vanity and vengeance choose to make sacrifices with the LORD as a witness.  In each case the cost of sin is ultimately death, because sin kills people, often in ironic or unexpected ways.

QuoteAnd Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

— Judges 11:30-31 (KJV)

What is the teaching from Jesus Christ, the Son of God about making oaths?

QuoteMatthew 5

33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Jephthah made a mess for himself because he did not heed such wisdom.  Had he not vainly pledged himself before the LORD to a bloody gamble, involving taking away the lives of other people's children, then it would not have been due to him to lose his only beloved daughter as a sacrifice to his perverse ambition.  Did the LORD really give him victory because of his vow, or was he just lucky?  Jephthat could not have believed that the LORD was with him in his cause if he had to offer him a sacrifice.  Does this prove that the LORD is hard-hearted and cruel?  Or, that he permits all men (evil as we are) the freedom of choice, and compensates them accordingly?

Perhaps the confusion arises from the notion that the Bible, being the "Good Book," should theoretically be full only of good stories that show us how to act.  In fact, the Old Testament, in the book of Judges, is an attempt at the recording of history, with almost nothing of redeeming value except brutal honesty.  The acts of the men of Israel and Judah, with a few notable exceptions, are very "displeasing to the LORD."  We see a kind of repeating pattern of evil which challenges our ability to read without being taken aback.

QuoteThen there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them;
Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?

Again, blood debt begets blood payment where all men are hard-hearted and cruel.  The LORD had to recognize the blood debt Saul, as king of Israel, had incurred against His own name, the name of the LORD.  The terms of repayment were called for by the Gibeonites, as it was only their freely given blessing which could restore the balance.  What is the advice given by Jesus Christ?

QuoteMatthew 5

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

If the Gibeonites had heeded such perfect advice, then more senseless bloodshed would have been avoided, and their lot would have been greater in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Instead they asked for seven of Saul's seed to give as a blood sacrifice to their barley crop.  If this is imperfect justice, it is not God's will, but man's.  Yet, the Gibeonites could alternatively have asked for an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth, in which case many more of David's people would have had to be sacrificed to make peace.

The Old Testament shows why salvation from sin is necessary, and prefigures in many small but significant ways the way in which that salvation is accomplished in the New Testament, in Jesus Christ.  What the Old Testament makes clear, is that men have a free will, they choose to do evil habitually, and that God's interactions with men have been both just and filled with grace, a grace which men choose not to see because it leaves them alone in their guilt and shame for their own convicted sins.

And the Old Testament prophet ultimately points to love and hope, which is not accomplished through works of the Law, but through the works of the Son of God, the foretold deliverer who makes it possible for man to break free from perpetual slavery to his own evil nature, and the cascading consequences of that evil in a small world.  What seems like a harsh and punitive God in the strict codes of Leviticus, is really a stern doctor trying to cure a spiritual syphilitic, to prepare her to bear His own incarnation.

Thanks for posting that Michael.  I read through parts of the Come and Here post on  Phoenicians and Molech,  but overlooked the twisting of the OT with the Talmud concerning Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit.   Thanks much for the post and clarifications. Your comments make a great statement on OT prophecies.
