The public prosecutor's investigative office has ordered an investigation into Holocaust denial allegedly committed by an MP for the radical nationalist Jobbik party, the state news channel M1 has reported.

According to the television channel, the opposition politician has been taken to court by a private individual after he branded the Holocaust a "hoax" in a private letter sent in 2012, which had since been leaked. Now, Parliament will have to vote with a two-thirds majority to revoke the MP's immunity for the court case to continue, which will assess whether Kulcsár denied or questioned the fact that crimes against humanity had been committed by the Nazis.

The television report also claimed that the Jobbik MP had also been taken to court for desecrating a Holocaust memorial in 2011, but no charges could be brought against Kulcsár because the case had lapsed last summer. The case involved Kulcsár spitting onto a statue composition on the Danube embankment, of which he informed acquaintances via e-mail. At the time, a spokesman for Jobbik said that the MP had since "regretted" his actions.

The Hungarian parliament passed legislation in 2010 under which denial of the Holocaust and of crimes by the Nazi regime in public is punishable by up to three years of imprisonment.
