Nine people were killed late Wednesday at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. after a white gunman walked in during a prayer meeting and began shooting.

Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen told a press conference early Thursday that the gunman, described as a clean-shaven man in his early 20s, was still at large and "extremely dangerous."

"This is a tragedy that no community should have to experience," Mullen said. "It is senseless and unfathomable in today's society that someone would walk into a church during a prayer meeting and take their lives."

"The only reason that someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate," said Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley. "It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine, and we will bring that person to justice ... This is one hateful person."

Mullen said that the shooting would be investigated as a hate crime, but would not elaborate further. He also announced that a reward for information leading to the shooter's capture would be offered Thursday.

As Mullen and Riley updated the news media, a group of pastors huddled together praying in a circle across the street.

Earlier, police moved members of the news media back away from the site due to what they called an "imminent" threat. They did not release any details.

Authorities said the shooting took place at approximately 9 p.m. local time. Police would not immediately confirm the identities of the victims. Mullen said there were survivors, but did not say how many, or how many were inside the church at the time of the shooting.

It was also not immediately clear whether Clementa Pinckney, the church's pastor and a member of the South Carolina state Senate, was a victim of the shooting. Antjuan Seawright, a spokesman for state Senate Democrats, told the Associated Press he hadn't heard from Pinkney or his family.

"We are praying," Seawright said.

Police described the suspect as having a small or slender build. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt with blue jeans and Timberland boots, and was clean shaven.

Approximately two hours after the shooting, a man matching the suspect's description was briefly detained near the shooting scene, but was later let go by police. The man, identified as 21-year-old David Corrie, told the Post and Courier he was walking out of a Shell gas station's convenience store when police forced him to get down on the ground and handcuffed him.

The campaign of GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush sent out an email saying that due to the shooting, the candidate had canceled an event planned in the city Thursday. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley issued a statement calling the shooting a "senseless tragedy."

"While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we'll never understand what motivated anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another," Haley said. "Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers."

The church is a historic African-American church that traces its roots to 1816, when several churches split from Charleston's Methodist Episcopal church. One of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822. He was caught, and white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has added a crucial element to the emerging narrative on the shooting in South Carolina by posting a tweet of the suspect posing with a Confederate flag vanity plate.

The narrative will be crafted to add fuel to the racist war engineered to unfold this summer. It will also be used to push more draconian gun legislation in Congress, likely at the behest of the Obama administration.

The largely irrelevant Confederate flag is continually cited by the liberal corporate media as a symbol of resurgent racism in the United States.

"Not only is 'Southern pride' rooted in highly problematic histories, but it's also reflective of modern-day racism and injustices," writes Krystie Yandoli for the liberal news blog, The Huffington Post.

"The history of the United States of America is deeply rooted in obvious and inherent kinds of racism against countless ethnic groups, there's no doubt about that. But it's not just by happenstance that this specific symbol of hate is so relevant below the Mason-Dixon line."

The reported Facebook profile for Dylann Roof, the suspect in the Charleston, S.C., church massacre, was barely used and apparently created earlier this year, strangely enough.

Unlike the vast majority of Facebook users, Roof only had around 80 friends who were all added in 2015 and he apparently didn't bother to upload a banner image, meaning that Roof – or whoever ran the account – put the bare minimum of effort into the profile.

In comparison, Facebook users between the ages of 18-24 have on average about 650 friends, meaning that the 21-year-old Roof was well below average.

And, oddly enough, Roof's only Facebook image available to the public shows him scowling while wearing Rhodesia and apartheid-era South Africa flags and the image was uploaded on May 21, indicating that the account wasn't randomly created by someone else after the church shooting.

It's quite the coincidence that such a photo was publicly available on Facebook for media circulation, especially as it fits the Southern Poverty Law Center's "domestic terrorist" narrative.

And it's also strange that a racist such as Roof would have a large number of African-American friends on Facebook.

Also, it appears the George Soros-backed SPLC was the first to release a photo of Roof sitting on his car with a "Confederate States of America" front license plate in clear view.

The SPLC, a "legal advocacy organization" which routinely smears libertarians and conservatives by falsely conflating them with extremist groups, wasted no time to exploit the shooting to promote its agenda.

"The increase [in hate groups] has been driven by a backlash to the country's increasing racial diversity, an increase symbolized, for many, by the presence of an African-American in the White House," the SPLC said in a statement released Thursday.

In other words, the SPLC is trying to link Roof with non-racist conservatives who routinely criticize Obama's presidency.

   A friend, Joseph Meek, 20, told the Daily News he had taken the .45

   said Meek, who is white. "He wanted it to be segregated. He wanted it
   to be white with the white, black with the black. All the races
   segregated.

   "He wanted to do something big, like the Trayvon Martin case," said
   Meek, referring to the unarmed black teen gunned down in 2012 in
   Florida by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. "He was upset
   about it. It made him mad."


Dylann Roof was arrested in North Carolina the morning after the massacre.

   Meek said he took the gun away but, prompted by his own legal troubles,
   returned it the next day.

   "I only took it away because he was drunk. I didn't take him
   seriously," Meek said. "I do feel a little guilty because I could have
   let someone know."

   He said he called the FBI on Thursday once surveillance photos of Roof
   were made public. The call helped agents identify Roof.

   Roof's uncle, Carson Cowles, said the suspect's dad, Ben Roof, gave him
   the pistol for his 21st birthday in April — a present that delighted
   the shy young man with a bowl haircut.

   Cowles told The News he believed it was the first gun Dylann ever
   possessed. He last spoke to him a day after he got the pistol,
   recalling his nephew barely could put down the firearm to talk.

   "He said, 'I got to go, I'm outside shooting target practice right
   now,' " Cowles said. "He sounded happy about it."

   "He's a monster . . . and he needs to pay for what he's done," Cowles
   said.

   Reached by The News in Columbia, S.C., Thursday, Roof's grandfather,
   Joe Roof, would only describe Dylann as "a great grandkid."

   Another friend, Dalton Tyler, 20, said Roof talked openly about wanting
   segregation and his desire to start a civil war. He recalled Roof once
   yelling a racial slur and threatening a black woman for merely looking
   at him.

   "He told her, 'What the f--k you looking at, n----r! I'll shoot your
   ass,' " Tyler told The News.

   On his Facebook page, Roof posted more hints that he hated black
   people. In a profile photo, he posed scowling and wearing a black
   jacket emblazoned with an apartheid-era South African flag and another
   representing the former white supremacist African state of Rhodesia,
   which is now Zimbabwe.

   Another photo posted to social media shows Roof sitting on the hood of
   his black 2000 Hyundai Elantra GS with a Confederate flag plate on the
   front bumper.

   Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center civil
   rights group, said Roof's name never crossed their radar. It remained
   unclear whether Roof had links to any of the 16 known white supremacist
   organizations in South Carolina.

   Records obtained by The News showed Roof had several run-ins with the
   law. He was arrested Feb. 28 at Columbia's Columbiana Centre shopping
   mall on drug charges. A cop confronted Roof, who was dressed in all
   black, because several mall employees complained he was asking bizarre
   questions, such as, "What time do you close?" and "How many associates
   are working?"

   Roof nervously explained that he was asking the questions because his
   parents wanted him to get a job. He was arrested after a search turned
   up a bottle containing strips of Suboxone, a narcotic used to treat
   opiate

In the wake of the Charleston shooting Thursday, and before the bodies were cold, those with a pre disposed anti-Second Amendment agenda disgustingly jumped on the tragic situation to advocate for increased gun control.

The argument particularly made little sense in this case given that reports quoting law enforcement suggested that suspected killer Dylann Storm Roof was given the gun used in the shooting spree by his father as a gift, when Roof was ineligible to own a firearm due to drug related crimes.

The story then evolved into Dylann STOLE the gun, a Glock, from his parents.

In either case, laws were flouted, and further restricting the rights of law abiding Americans would have done NOTHING to prevent this from happening.

CNN reports today, however, that in actual fact, the shooter BOUGHT the gun he used himself:

He himself bought the .45-caliber handgun used in the shooting last April at a Charleston gun store, according to the two officials. Earlier, a senior law enforcement official had indicated that [his] father bought him a Glock firearm for his birthday.

His grandfather says that Roof was given "birthday money" and that the family didn't know what Roof did with it.

If this information is accurate, it means that Roof passed a background check in a gun store, a check that gun control advocates want to see applied to ALL transactions, public and private.

This begs the question then, if background checks on all firearm transactions are the one stop solution to gun crime, then how did Roof, a known felon, pass the background check that we are told over and over again is the key to reducing gun violence?

Indeed, it is the case that the majority of other mass shooters in recent years managed to buy the firearms they used legally after passing background checks.

The shooters at Virginia Tech, the Aurora Colorado movie theater, Fort Hood, Isla Vista, the Washington Navy Yard, the attempted mass killing at Arapahoe High School ALL passed background checks.

The shooter at Washington Navy Yard even managed to buy his firearm after the background check system was supposedly strengthened following the incident at Virgina Tech.

The fact is that criminals break the laws, and it seems the laws don't work anyway. Further infringing on the rights of those who abide by the laws will not change either of these situations.
