Still No Clues in Murder of DNC’s Seth Rich, As Conspiracy Theories Thicken

Washington DC's up-and-coming Bloomingdale neighborhood remains gripped by fear three week after the murder there of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich — with still no reported leads, suspects or arrests in the killing.

At the same time, conspiracy theories surrounding the murder have reached a new frenzy, especially after the hacking of DNC e-mails led to the resignation of its chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Rich was beaten, shot and killed early on the morning of July 8 while he was walking home and talking on the phone to his girlfriend. Police have said they haven't determined if his murder was a botched robbery or something else. The killer or killers appear to have taken nothing from their victim, leaving behind his wallet, watch and phone.

DC's Metropolitan Police Department tells Heat Street on Friday that there are "no updates" in the case. But while information from authorities may be scarce, the Internet has certainly taken Seth Rich's story to some very dark places — despite no evidence to back up any of the reigning conspiracy theories.

Shortly after the killing, Redditors and social media users were pursuing a "lead" saying that Rich was en route to the FBI that fateful morning, apparently intending to speak to special agents about an "ongoing court case" possibly involving the Clinton family.

Further "investigation" dug up no such court case and there is no evidence whatsoever that Rich, who did voter outreach work for the DNC, had any knowledge of alleged Clinton misdeeds.

More recently, Wikileaks's thousands of DNC emails and voice mails have piqued Reddit's interest, with Redditors combing through years of communications looking for any clue to Rich's murder.

Reddit's pro-Donald Trump subreddit, /r/The_Donald posited that Rich could be the DNC's "leaker" – the one who ultimately gave Wikileaks 30,000 emails to publish.

The theory is apparently based on Julian Assange's recent ITV appearance, where he scoffed at the idea that Russian hackers could be responsible for the data dump, and said that "anyone" within the Democrats' organization could easily have sent Wikileaks the offending messages.

Given that Rich as a DNC staffer presumably would have had some access to its servers, Reddit is absolutely positive Rich paid the ultimate price for exposing Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC's crusade against Bernie Sanders.

The crazy conspiracy doesn't end there. /r/The_Donald had even put together a timeline, worthy of Russell Crowe's back shed in A Beautiful Mind. Not only does the subreddit link Rich to the Clintons through a series of (alleged) side jobs and encounters, it also links the 27-year-old junior staffer to powerful environmentalists who may or may not be Bernie Sanders supporters. Based on their theory, these "green" bigwigs pushed Rich to release the DNC's emails, prompting the Clintons, who somehow knew about the operation, to order a hit.

Other conspiracy theorists are seeking to link Rich's murder to that of Molly Macauley, a beloved "space economist" who had testified before Congress. Macauley was killed just a few days before Rich, while walking her dogs in an upscale Baltimore neighborhood. As with Rich's death, the murder remains unsolved. There is no evidence to connect the deaths.

Seth Rich's death is just the latest in a long line of high profile, DC murders that inspire such investigatory fantasies. The proximity to power DC aides enjoy makes them objects of intrigue. The 2001 murder of Capitol Hill intern Chandra Levy, for example, is still in the news, as charges against her accused killer were just dismissed on Thursday – the result of "new" evidence prosecutors say clears the man convicted in her death of responsibility.

Until Seth Rich's murder is solved, then, expect the Internet to keep digging.

   Assassination Of Top US Democratic Party Official Leads To FBI Capture
   Of Clinton "Hit Team"

   A somber Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) report circulating in the
   Kremlin today says that a top American Democratic Party staffer
   preparing to testify against Hillary Clinton was assassinated this past
   Sunday during a secret meeting in Washington D.C. he believed he was
   having with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, but who
   turned out, instead, to be a "hit team"—and who, in turn, were captured
   yesterday after a running gun battle with US federal police forces just
   blocks from the White House. [Note: Some words and/or phrases appearing
   in quotes are English language approximations of Russian words/phrases

   According to this report, SVR "electronic specialists" performing
   counter intelligence "missions/operations" noted on 7 July an
   "enormous/gigantic" increase of computer and telephonic traffic between
   the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington D.C.
   and the Clinton Foundation (CF) offices in New York City.
   
   Upon a "deeper/broader" investigation into this "odd/strange" increase
   in communications between these believed to be separate organizations,
   this report continues, SVR analysts determined that the original
   initiating person responsible was a 27-year-old DNC official named Seth
   Rich who was that political organizations Deputy Director Data for
   Voter Protection/Expansion who had helped develop a computer program
   for the Democratic National Committee allowing people to type in their
   address and get a map to their polling place.

   contact the Clinton Foundation, this report explains, was his discovery
   of a "pay-to-play" scheme that involved people seeking jobs with a new

   Clinton's through their foundation with various US federal government
   positions being designated by the dollar amount it would cost to buy
   them.
   
   As the "cash for favors" lifestyle of both former President Bill
   Clinton and Hillary Clinton have long been known about, this report
   continues, SVR analysts, while preparing to document the results of
   their 7 July probe into the Clinton Foundation concerns of DNC official
   Seth Rich, became alarmed when they discovered that his "micro computer
   system" (cell phone?) had become "infected/virused" by
   "killers/assassins" working for the Clinton's—and who the SVR had
   previously documented as being involved in the assassination of the
   husband of the State of Georgia prosecutor investigating Bill Clinton
   for child sex crimes and the murder of American pop singer Christina

   Fearing that the life of DNC official Seth Rich was in danger due to
   his being "tracked/targeted" by this known Clinton "hit team", this
   report says, SVR Director Mikhail Fradkov authorized an emergency
   contact between his agency and the US State Department—but, and
   shockingly, when Russian diplomats presented the SVR findings to US
   authorities, on 7 July, they were immediately expelled from the United
   States.
   
   Causing even greater perplexity to the SVR about these events, this
   report continues, was that in expelling these Russian diplomats from
   the United States, the US State Department thanked Russia for the
   information stating that it would be "taken care of", and then formally
   requested that the matter remain secret.
   
   However, less than 24 hour later, this report notes, the Washington
   Post wrote a "made up story" about what had actually happened causing
   Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov to publically state: "I can
   confirm that [...] the US government did demand the departure of two
   employees of the Russian Embassy in Washington DC without presenting
   any complaints to the employees themselves. Furthermore, the State
   Department strongly asked us not to make this fact public. As you can
   see, it is customary for American diplomats to keep their word."
   
   Three days later, this report grimly states, SVR fears that the life of
   DNC official Seth Rich was in danger proved true when, on 10 July, he
   was gunned down in Washington D.C. at approximately 4:19 am.
   
   According to the official US police report of DNC official Seth Rich's
   murder, this report explains, it says: "Detectives from the
   Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are investigating a
   fatal shooting that occurred in the 2100 block of Flagler Place,
   Northwest on Sunday, July 10, 2016. At approximately 4:19 am, members
   of the Fifth District were patrolling the area when they heard
   gunshots. Upon arrival on the scene, members located an adult male
   victim conscious and breathing, and suffering from gunshot wounds. The
   victim was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his
   injuries and was pronounced dead."
   
   This SVR report, though, says that DNC official Seth Rich was
   "lured/enticed" to his murder by this Clinton "hit team" who portrayed
   themselves as FBI agents wanting to secretly interview him—and that the
   expelled Russian diplomats had given the US State Department
   "electronic access" to so that they could be found.
   
   Curiously, this report continues, US authorities, and while being able
   to track this Clinton "hit team" since 7 July, only confronted these
   assassins yesterday—and who before being captured, engaged in a gun
   battle with US federal police forces firing their fully automatic
   weapons before being trapped and surrendering just blocks from the US
   Capitol and White House.

      Weiner may have attempted to sway Rhode Island for Clinton. The
      Special guest was Mark Weiner who was a DNC Head in the 90s and power
      player in Ri. What happened in Rhode island? Well Wikileaks emails show

      closing at 1 PM and only about 1/3 of registered polling places
      remained open for the primary. All this was getting massive pushback
      from the Sanders campaign. They refer to the SOS of Ri as ("ours") but
      talk about covering themselves. They fall back on the fact that
      elections in Rhode island are held by the BOE and not the SOS. However
      it appears a coup took place to get the BOE head suspended from his job
      conveniently overlapping with Rhode islands primary:

      Rockefeller can be seen together in 1995 in this image). Then a few
      months later she donated $1000 to Robert Abrams (Hillary Clinton

      Senator in NY). Fast forward to the year 2000 and she donated $1000 to
      Hillary Clinton's Senate run.Then fast forward to June 2007 and somehow
      she donated $2300 as well as $2050 on the same day. This is way above
      the legal limit. In August 2008, she also donated $2050 to Clinton.
      Then came $1000 to Barbara Boxer in October 2010 (This is the lady who

      played a role in introducing Clinton and Kleeb and setting him up for
      public office.
   
   TLDR:
   
      The Clintons have known the Kleebs since at least 2008. Scott Kleeb
      started a business the Clinton Global Initiative was found fraudulently
      supporting. Seth Rich was deeply entrenched with the Kleebs from their
      Nebraska Democratic work. Seth Rich was hired onto a position in the
      DNC out of a job from a data consulting firm which had previously
      worked with President Clinton, which was opened up because the Clintons
      pushed for the Voter Expansion project so that 2008 didn't happen to
      Hillary in 2016. Seth Rich has at least 2 connections to the Clintons.
      Jane Kleeb is a voracious environmentalist/Sanders supporter who
      might've prompted Seth Rich to leak the emails, especially after their
      business was one month earlier revealed for fraudulency. The best way
      to cover their tracks would be to make this seem like another
      right-wing conspiracy. His murder was deemed a robbery, but nothing was
      missing from his person.

   His cause of death wasn't immediately known, but Weiner had been
   treated for years for leukemia.

   He was supposed to be a delegate at the convention, but the state party
   said the delegation recently voted to replace him by his son, Richard,
   because of his poor health. Weiner's wife, Susan, was also a delegate
   at the convention.

   Weiner's company, Financial Innovations Inc., has since 1980 provided
   the official campaign merchandise for the DNC, such as T-shirts and
   buttons. The company also provided merchandise and other work for
   political candidates including Barack Obama's presidential campaigns in
   2008 and 2012 and for current presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
   He is a longtime friend of the Clintons.

   Paolino said Bill Clinton visited Weiner for several hours this month
   in Newport, where Weiner was staying at Paolino's home.

   Paolino told the Providence Journal that Weiner first met Hillary
   Clinton in 1976 when she was running Jimmy Carter's presidential
   campaign in Indiana and Weiner was her intern. Weiner had been involved
   in every presidential campaign since then. He also held several
   leadership roles over the years in Democratic Party organizations.

  "Mark S. Weiner died while following his heart, heading to see his
   lifelong friends, the Clintons. On Tuesday morning, the longtime
   Democratic Party activist and major fundraiser rose, eager to travel to
   the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia to hear a speech by
   his longtime friend, former President Bill Clinton, and to see Hillary
   Clinton become the first female nominee for president from a major
   party. During his speech at the convention Tuesday night, Bill Clinton
   said he and Hillary cried when they heard of Weiner's death. "He was
   getting dressed to come to the convention," former Providence Mayor
   Joseph R. Paolino Jr. said, speaking by phone from Philadelphia. "He
   got up early and went back to bed and passed away." He said Weiner had
   leukemia, but he was unsure what caused his death. The Associated Press
   reported that Weiner was in Newport when he died. Weiner, 62, of East
   Greenwich, is a former state Democratic Party chairman who was
   president of Financial Innovations, a Cranston firm that has served as
   the official merchant and supplier of banners, pens, hats and virtually
   anything else at every Democratic National Convention since 1980. He's
   also served as a Rhode Island delegate to the convention and raised
   millions of dollars for Bill and Hillary Clinton and other candidates.
   He leaves his wife, Susan, and four children. Paolino and Weiner were
   friends since 1969, when they attended La Salle Academy together, and
   he'd been letting Weiner stay at a home he owns on Ocean Drive, in
   Newport. "It's a loss for humanity — that is how good a person Mark
   was," he said. "I lost a brother." Bill Clinton visited Weiner at the
   Newport home on July 10, Paolino said. "[Clinton] loved Mark. They just
   talked. They watched the golf match." Weiner's friendship with the
   Clintons began in 1976 when Weiner was an intern for Hillary Clinton,
   who was then running Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign in Indiana,
   Paolino said. When Carter won, Weiner landed a job at the White House,
   he said. And Weiner grew close to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton while
   raising money for the Democratic Governors Association. Weiner had been
   selected as a Rhode Island delegate, but his health prevented him from
   fully participating in the convention, so his son Richard Weiner
   replaced him, Paolino said. But Mark Weiner wanted to come to
   Philadelphia to hear Bill Clinton speak and Hillary Clinton nominated,
   and it was "poetic" that he'd pass away while heading to a Democratic
   convention for that purpose, Paolino said. "That's the only way Mark
   Weiner would have left." Bill Clinton had found a room for Weiner near
   his hotel room in Philadelphia. But on Tuesday morning, Paolino broke
   the news to Clinton, who offered his condolences to Richard Weiner. He
   said believes Clinton will speak at Weiner's funeral, though it was too
   early to know the details of the funeral services. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed
   recalled Weiner as a "dear friend," saying, "He always had a kind and
   generous heart and helped strengthen and enrich the community in so
   many ways. He may have befriended presidents, but he really connected
   with people from all walks of life." U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said,
   "Mark was active in Democratic politics for a generation, and he was a
   personal friend. It's safe to say he was Rhode Island's biggest Clinton
   fan, and I know how excited he was to see Hillary accept the party's
   nomination at this convention." Governor Raimondo said, "I'm saddened
   to hear about Mark's passing, and my heart goes out to his family. Mark
   cared deeply and worked hard to move our state forward. His presence
   will be sorely missed." House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello,
   D-Cranston, described Weiner as "a giant and a cornerstone of the
   Democratic Party — in Rhode Island as well as the nation." He said,
   "Mark was a good father, a good husband and a good man. He always did
   all he could to promote Rhode Island and to be of assistance to anybody
   in the state." State Democratic Party Chairman Joseph M. McNamara said,
   "After decades of work on behalf of the party, this convention — more
   than any — would have been the capstone to his service to the
   Democratic Party. His loss will be profound." Former state General
   Treasurer Frank T. Caprio recalled an anecdote highlighting Weiner's
   national profile: In 1988, Weiner was selling political merchandise at
   the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, and Caprio stopped by
   his office at the convention hall to try to get an extra pass to the
   convention. "A minute later, Jimmy Carter walks in, looking for the
   same thing," he said. "Here's the former president in his home state
   and he's going to Mark for passes for people he can't say 'no' to. That
   is who Mark was." Caprio said, "We saw the public side of him — hosting
   major events, bringing presidents and others into the state. But he was
   most comfortable helping fellow Rhode Islanders. He was always there
   for so many people." One of those people was Diane Florio Penza,
   executive director of the imPossible Dream Playground, in Warwick. When
   the privately owned playground, which has equipment accessible for
   children with disabilities, was vandalized in August 2015, Weiner
   showed up, offering to cover the full cost of repairs. "He took out his
   checkbook and said, 'What do you need?' " she recalled, saying he
   provided $7,000. "He cared about the playground being made whole again
   for the children." When told of Weiner's death, Florio Penza said, "Oh,
   my goodness. I am very, very sorry to hear this news. He was so
   generous and kind. He had a very big heart."

  "One of Rhode Island's most powerful and least known political players
   died Tuesday.
   Mark Weiner was trying to get to Philadelphia to see his friend Hillary
   Clinton be nominated for president. He died in Newport, where he was
   staying in a house owned by developer Joe Paolino Jr.
   Weiner, 62, fought cancer, survived a car crash that left him in a
   coma, and was sick enough in recent weeks that he couldn't make it as a
   delegate to the convention.
   His loss is a blow to the party, and particularly to the Clintons, who
   rushed to his bedside years ago when Weiner was hospitalized in Houston.
   Weiner got into politics at a young age, and he excelled at it.
   "He got involved with the Democratic Governors Association, many, many
   years ago, and made a lot of friends, like Bill Clinton, and they liked
   Mark. And so they liked doing business and working with them and he was
   smart enough and savvy enough to kind of build on that over the years,
   and made tremendous lifelong friendships," said Bill Lynch, a former
   Rhode Island Democratic Party chairman.
   Lynch said most of Bill Clinton's numerous visits to Rhode Island were
   at the request of Weiner.
   "He was no one-and-done kind of guy. He's been a nationally influential
   member of the Democratic Party for over 30 years," Lynch said.
   And while Weiner's face was not well known to the general public in
   Rhode Island, he was famous in party circles.
   "He actually was better known nationally outside the state of Rhode
   Island around the country for his political Democratic endeavors than
   he was right here at home," Lynch said.
   To pass away on the day Bill Clinton is addressing the convention that
   will nominate Hillary Clinton for president, is just ironic.
   "I'm sure that he would have loved to be around to see Hillary Clinton
   sworn in as president, I can assure you of that," Lynch said.
   The former president visited with Weiner two weeks ago, Paolino told
   NBC 10 News. Bill Clinton mentioned the passing of his Rhode Island
   friend during a speech at the Democratic National Convention.
   Weiner's funeral is planned for Tuesday at Temple Beth-El in Providence."
