Heads Roll at DNC: 3 Democratic National Committee resignations

 WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chief executive of the Democratic National Committee and two other top officials have resigned in the wake of an email hack that embarrassed the party on the eve of its presidential nominating convention.

CEO Amy Dacey, chief finance officer Brad Marshall and communications director Luis Miranda left their jobs on Tuesday, the party said in a statement.

The resignations are the latest fallout from the hacked emails, which exposed an apparent lack of neutrality in the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, with some party officials disparaging Sanders.

Marshall wrote the most explosive email, questioning Sanders' Jewish faith and suggesting he could be portrayed as an atheist. He has apologized for the missive.

Earlier, party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned her position and, after being booed at a pre-convention appearance last week in Philadelphia, chose not to speak from the convention stage.

Longtime Democratic operative Donna Brazile is serving as the party's interim chair. Brazile said Tuesday that she has created a "transition team" to help prepare the party for its post-election mission. She said Tom McMahon, a former DNC executive director under then-Chair Howard Dean, will lead that group.

Clinton operatives who moved over to party headquarters after she had effectively secured the nomination in June will continue in their roles; that group includes DNC chief of staff Brandon Davis. Additionally, veteran Democratic strategist Doug Thornell will serve as an interim senior adviser to the party.

Dacey already has a new job. She has been hired by Squared Communications, a Democratic consulting firm based in Washington.

"As one of the top campaign strategists in our party, and with our experiences together on presidential, Senate and congressional campaigns, Amy will help our firm's clients navigate this and future election cycles," Michael Meehan, founder and CEO Squared Communications, said in a statement.

Before joining the DNC, Dacey was executive director of EMILY's List, which works to elect female Democrats.

The cache of more than 19,000 messages was made public by the group WikiLeaks just before the convention.

Democratic Party officials learned in late April that their systems had been attacked after they discovered malicious software on their computers. A cybersecurity firm they employed found traces of at least two sophisticated hacking groups on the Democrats' network - both of which have ties to the Russian government.

  "Three top staffers are leaving the Democratic National Committee (DNC)
   in a staff shakeup spurred by the leak of damaging emails about the
   primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
   
   The CEO of the DNC, Amy Dacey, is departing, as are communications
   director Luis Miranda and chief financial officer Brad Marshall, the
   DNC announced in a statement.
   
   Donna Brazile, who is taking the reins of the DNC following the
   resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz (R-Fla.) as chairwoman, made no
   mention of the email scandal in her statement, mostly thanking the
   departing staffers for their service.

   "Thanks in part to the hard work of Amy, Luis, and Brad, the Democratic
   Party has adopted the most progressive platform in history, has put
   itself in financial position to win in November, and has begun the
   important work of investing in state party partnerships," Brazile said
   in a statement.
   
   "I'm so grateful for their commitment to this cause, and I wish them
   continued success in the next chapter of their career."
   
   But it's clear that the DNC is trying to turn the page from the
   disastrous leak of nearly 20,000 stolen emails, which appeared to show
   officials at the committee plotting against Sanders's presidential
   campaign.
   
   Those messages, published by WikiLeaks just days before the Democratic
   convention, caused a political firestorm.
   
   Sanders supporters had long accused the DNC of tilting the primary
   process in favor of Clinton, including with the debate schedule, and
   the email messages appeared to confirm their suspicions.
   
   In one email, Marshall appeared to write about a plan to use Sanders's
   religion against him at a campaign event in Kentucky or West Virginia.
   Dacey wrote "AMEN" in response.
   
   The controversy threatened to drown out the unity message Democrats
   were hoping to deliver at their convention. Supporters of Sanders
   called for heads to roll at the committee.
   
   "They need to clean house," Nina Turner, a top spokeswoman for Sanders,
   told The Hill.
   
   The controversy only ebbed after Wasserman Schultz announced she would
   resign as DNC chairwoman and not appear onstage during the party summit
   in Philadelphia.
   
   It's fallen to Brazile, a prominent television commentator, to pick up
   the pieces as the Democratic Party enters the general election battle
   against Donald Trump.
   
   She announced Tuesday that Tom McMahon will lead a transition team to
   help prepare the party for November and that Brandon Davis, who already
   serves as chief of staff, will continue in that capacity.
   
   She also announced that Doug Thornell, a Democratic strategist who
   works at the consulting firm SKDKnickerbocker, would be joining the DNC
   on an interim basis as senior adviser.
   
   "This election is the most important of my lifetime, and the DNC will
   continue to recruit top talent to help lead the fight to elect Hillary
   Clinton and Democrats across the country," Brazile said.
   
   "I am committed to adding to our team of skilled professionals who will
   make sure that Donald Trump is held accountable for his reckless
   rhetoric and harmful policies."
   
   Republicans have sought to capitalize on the controversy at the DNC,
   with Trump seeking to court disaffected supporters of Sanders.
   
   "[Clinton] knew everything that was going on. She knew it was a rigged
   system, that Bernie Sanders never had a chance," Trump said.

   The Democratic Party that once was concerned with workers' rights, the
   elderly, civil rights, and the constitutional protections of America
   liberty no longer exists. As the just completed Democratic presidential
   primaries and the Democratic presidential convention have clearly
   demonstrated, the United States now has two Republican parties in
   service to the One Percent.

   The organized Democrats–the Democratic National Committee–have shown
   themselves to be even more venal and corrupt than the Republicans.
   Leaked emails document that the Democratic National Committee conspired
   with the Hillary campaign in order to steal the nomination from Bernie
   Sanders. It is clear that Sanders was the choice of Democratic Party
   voters for president, but the nomination was stolen from him by vote
   fraud and dirty tricks.

   The DNC and the media whores have tried to discredit the incriminating
   emails by alleging that the leaked emails resulted from a plot by
   Russia's President Vladimir Putin in behalf of "Putin's American
   agent," Donald Trump. "A vote for Trump is a vote for Putin," as the
   presstitute scum put it.

   This diversionary tactic has not worked. Not even Americans are stupid
   enough to fall for it.

    Just one day after this photo was taken, Senator Bernie Sanders QUIT
   the Democratic Party.  Strange thing for a man to do who has spent the
   last year campaigning for President as a Democrat.
   
   Unless, of course, he got beaten-up by someone else in his own Party .
