WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrested on US extradition request, lawyer says

After seven years of self-imposed exile, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested inside the embassy of Ecuador in London Thursday on what his lawyer said was an extradition request from the United States.

The Metropolitan Police said the Ecuadorian ambassador invited officers to take Assange into custody on a 2012 British warrant for bail jumping after the Ecuadorian government's withdrawal of asylum.

In a videotaped statement, Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno said his country's patience for Assange's behavior "has reached its limit."

Moreno described it as a "sovereign decision" due to "repeated violations to international conventions and daily life."

He cited Assange's bizarre behavior inside the embassy as well as his alleged violations of Ecuador's demand that he refrain from interference in the affairs of other states, particularly in the alleged leaking of Vatican documents in January.

The Justice Department inadvertently revealed the existence of a sealed criminal case against Assange in a court filing last year. It's not clear what he's been accused of.

In a statement Thursday, Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi said: "We are aware of the reports that Julian Assange was taken into custody by United Kingdom authorities."

Assange is accused of jumping bail seven years ago while facing extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations. The Swedish accusations have since been dropped but he was still wanted for the bail violation.

After his arrest, his attorney, Jennifer Robinson, tweeted that Assange had been arrested on an extradition request from the U.S., not just for breach of the British warrant.

Separately, he has been under U.S. Justice Department scrutiny for years for WikiLeaks' role in publishing thousands of government secrets.

WikiLeaks, the transparency group that he founded, was also front and center of the 2016 U.S. presidential election for leaking emails from the Democratic National Committee.

During the presidential campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump repeatedly praised the organization, saying numerous times at rallies, "I love WikiLeaks."

Moreno, the Ecuadorian president, did not specifically confirm that Assange would be extradited to the U.S., saying only that he "will not be extradited to a country where he could suffer torture or the death penalty. " He said the British government confirmed that in writing.

In a list of grievances, Moreno said Assange had installed prohibited electronic equipment in the embassy, blocked security cameras and even "accessed the security files of our embassy without permission." He said Assange also had "confronted and mistreated the diplomatic guards."

The United Kingdom's Minister of State for Europe and the Americas, Sir Alan Duncan, applauded the arrest, saying it followed "extensive dialogue" between the two countries.

'Swedish software developer' linked to WikiLeaks arrested in Ecuador in flight attempt – reports
https://www.rt.com/news/456299-swedish-ecuador-arrest-wikileaks/?utm_source=browser&utm_medium=aplication_chrome&utm_campaign=chrome

Ecuador's Interior Minister has confirmed that a person who is alleged to have links to WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange has been arrested as he attempted to take a flight to Japan. She also spoke of two 'Russian hackers.'

Ecuador's Interior Minister María Paula Romo said Thursday that a man was taken into custody in one of the airports as he was about to board a plane to Japan. There is little official information about his identity or the reasons for his arrest, with Romo telling a local radio station the individual was arrested on Thursday afternoon for the purposes of investigation.

Shortly after Assange's own arrest in London earlier that day, Romo hinted that the Ecuadorian government is about to unleash a crackdown on Assange's supposed web of connections on the Ecuadorian soil.

She claimed that a "key" member of WikiLeaks, who is also "close to Julian Assange," has been a resident of Ecuador for several years and has engaged in malicious activity to undermine the government.

"We have sufficient evidence that he has been collaborating with destabilization attempts against the government, " Romo said. The minister claimed that the individual used to accompany Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rafael Correa government, Ricardo Patiño, on trips overseas.

"Along with Ricardo Patiño he has traveled twice last year to Peru and also to Spain," she said, adding that the two also took a trip to Venezuela in February this year one day apart.

While the Interior Ministry did not reveal the identity of Assange's supposed helper, an anonymous official told AP that the arrested man was a Swedish software developer by the name of Ola Bini, a resident of Ecuador's capital Quito.

Bini appears to run a Twitter account under his own name, which is filled with reposts of news developments surrounding Assange around the time of the publisher's arrest. Bini also retweeted the news about Romo announcing that a person who is "part of WikiLeaks" is living in Ecuador. He called "very worrisome" her remark that the information on the individual and the "two Russian hackers" might be soon handed over to prosecution. That was the accounts last tweet before going silent for 14 hours at the time of writing.

Bini also appears to have a blog in which he identifies himself as software developer for the Center for Digital Autonomy, a group specializing in privacy, cryptography and security. While his blog does not include any reference to WikiLeaks, a September 2013 blog entry touches on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and his explosive revelations.

Prominent Indian journalist Vijay Prashad has launched a campaign on Twitter for the Ecuadorian government to free Bini. Prashad, the head of Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, tweeted that Bini is innocent and known as a "celebrated open source advocate." Prashad said that Bini does not speak Spanish and has been allowed no lawyers since he was arrested "without reason."

His call was joined by Bini's fellow members of the open source software community.
