Newly-named Queens official steps down after tweets critical of Israel resurface

A recently appointed top staffer to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards suddenly withdrew from the position Monday — reportedly after facing scrutiny over old tweets critical of Israeli policies and lobbying efforts.

Michael Hurwitz was named as a deputy borough president on Sunday night and had been set to start in the role next month.

However, on Monday night, Richards said in a statement that "for professional and personal reasons" Hurwitz wouldn't be moving forward in the post as originally announced.

The statement came hours after some of Hurwitz's tweets resurfaced earlier on Monday — and were criticized by some members of the borough's large Orthodox Jewish community, according to the Queens Daily Eagle.  https://queenseagle.com/all/queens-deputy-borough-president-pick-withdraws-after-controversial-israel-tweets-emerge

Amid the controversy, Hurwitz told the Eagle that he and Richards "agreed that now is not the best time personally and professionally for me to join as was announced."

The tweets shared on Monday included one from 2019 defending Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar's contentious comments on the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

"#IlanOmar (sic) speaks the truth, that AIPAC $$ influences votes in [Congress]," the tweet read.

Another missive called right-wing Israeli politician Naftali Bennett a "cancer to Judaism" and said he wasn't welcome in the US in the wake of the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue mass shooting.

Hurwitz's account had been set to private by Monday night, but the Eagle posted screenshots of the tweets.

Speaking to the Queens paper, Hurwitz — an attorney and social worker who works at the non-profit GrowNYC — said he was a "proud Jew" and a "lifelong Zionist"

"I love the state of Israel and I love that I'm raising my children Jewish in Queens," he said, adding that he spent part of high school and college in Israel and once trained with the country's military.

Still, Hurwitz said that Twitter wasn't the best place to discuss Israel-US relations or the Israel-Palestine conflict.

"This is one of the most complex issues out there," he told the Eagle. "To try to put it into 250 characters or less was naïve."

Hurwitz didn't immediately return a message from The Post on Monday night.
